Simley Gets new coach

Post by hockeya1a »

From the Star and Trib -
former South St. Paul hockey star Ashley Albrecht has been hired as the girls' hockey coach at Simley. Albrecht, who was named the Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year in 2002, played on two NCAA championship teams with the Gophers. Last season, she was the coach at Orono

Great news she is a great person and was a great player at South St Paul and Minnesota.

Here is the record for the two programs 2007-08 season.

Orono:
record - 8 W 18 L
winning % - 0.308
GF 54
GA 100

Simley:
record - 10 W 16 L
winning % 0.385
GF 52
GA 67

Interesting to see this thread on Orono:

This is a very talented person who I hope the parents let coach and not throw out like the last group of experienced coaches.

Tough to be a girls hockey coach in some of these communities when you look at comments by parents. Good Luck to the new coach and the Simley program.

Snapshots are always dangerous, but I had a chance to watch Simley play Hill Murray last night - I watched them twice last year also against Hill and they were strong. Last night they lost 8-0 (4-0 after 1st) at varstiy and 6-0 at JV. I observed and was surprised on two counts - based on the program posts of the new female coach:

1) A man was clearly in charge of the bench - I don't know the new coach and there were two women who stood together by the back up goalie and joked all night - the older man (there were actually two men and two women in the box) appeared to do all of the directing of the team.

2) Simley last year with the coaching staff they had to me looked like a young team on the rise - last night they lost 8-0 and appeared to have gone the other way. I was impressed in one area the discipline of the players to stay out of the box was better than last years team.

I hope this works out changes for players, parents and coach are disruptive. This was a pretty strong young group in youth and last year I hope they continue to develop.

Funny story at the opening face off the starting center for Simley was sent off the ice for no mouthgaurd (with increased concussions in the game - way to go ref for enforcing!) after discussion with the man coach in charge there was much activity along the bench - finally you see the back up goalie take off her mask, detach her mouthgauard and give it to the center - who popped it in her mouth - great teamwork!! I kind of think everyone will remember their mouthgaurd for the future games!

Wow! I wonder if the backup wanted her mouthguard back after the game!
