AA versus A and Div I and, and, and, and.....

Post by SportsMa »

How about moving the AA or A, Div I, etc, etc... debate from the Hockey stories thread over to this separate thread so the stories thread can get back on track? Thanks!

Happy Holidays to all! Looking forward to watching some great tournament play over the break!

From Let's Play Hockey a brief article about what the author identifies as what scouts are looking for from her perspective.

If you are a good athelete, coachable, team player and academically sound you will have the opportunity to get looked at. College Coaches do not care if you are the leading scorer, they are more concerned with the all around player. We have been told that more assist leaders are looked at than the scorers. You can't score if someone doesn't set you up, and the team can't score if you don't pass the puck. Passing leaders are very high on the college scouts list.
I beg to differ with your opinion on team players. Take a look at your highest recuited players from this year or past years. They tend not to be your quintesencel team players, look at the goal to assit differentails.

Team players take the back seat to flamboyant players everytime. I love the team player, the great passer, the diggers, the defensive D, ect...

As far as I'm concerned, they are not recognized enough. IMO you are way off base if you think they are being looked at more than the scorers...like Kuehl... anybody have an opinion on this?

So here is the list of current D1 for this year. The D & G are all pretty committed team players. As I look at the forwards there are some prolific goal scorers - which you need to be as a forward. I am not sure though I see anyone on this list who is strictly a one way player - who doesn't share the puck?

Bemidji State University
Sadie Lundquist........F........Cloquet/Esko/Carlton HS
Erika Wheelhouse.....D........Crookston HS

Dartmouth College
Lisa Berremen...........D..........Eagan HS
Sally Komarek...........F..........The Blake School

Harvard University
Laura Bellamy............G........Duluth Northern Stars
Margaret Chute...........F.........Blake
Kelsey Romatoski.......D/F.........Academy of Holy Angels
Hilary Hayssen............D........Blake

Mercyhurst College
Jessica Christofferson........F.......Bemidji HS

University of Minnesota*
Rebecca Kortum......F......Hopkins HS

Minnesota State University*
Lauren Zrust........F.........Blaine HS
Erika Magnusson.......D........Fergus Falls HS

University of North Dakota*
Mary Loken..........F.............Roseau HS

St. Cloud State University*
Callie Dahl............F......Stillwater HS
Kylie Lane............F......Roseau HS
Lisa Martinson......D......St Louis Park HS
Alex Nelson..........F......Andover HS
Haylea Schmid......F......St. Francis HS

Total Minnesota high school commitments to date (12/22) = 18
*commitments confirmed by the school

You could debate on this all day and get no where! Whats the point? Class A - Division 3 Class AA - Division 1. Today there are some D3 players that could play D1 but got overlooked for some reason or another? You could debate on that to! Take a look at the last 3 years in girls hockey. Top scorer's in the state. Where are they now? And what class were they from? And how are they doing in college? Every college is different depends on what there looking for. Goaltending is a big factor to! Majority of really good goaltending is from class AA. Not to say there isn't good tending in class A because there are! But the majority is from AA.

The majority of the best players will be from the biggest schools (they had to beat out more kids to get to the top of their respective school team) or privates (which can attract the best). I agree that this is an endless debate.

Many class A teams don't cut the number of players that the AA teams do. The exception may be the A privates - but not all A privates. There are a couple other outstate exceptions I suppose too.

I don't believe that the best player in the state has to come from an AA school at any position, but the odds are better that this will be the case just based on the process of so many players in the AA programs vs the few in the A programs.

The MSHSL is a participation based organization (they promote participation 1st). Their goal with classes - I assume - is to give more the experience of a state tourney that otherwise wouldn't experience it based on trying to compete with HUGE schools. I think that this is another debate that is endless - should a private school move up since it MAY draw the best players yet still have a small enrollment? Is this within the spirit of what the MSHSL wants to accomplish? It's a big commitment for a school to make a 4-year agreement to play up at AA.

To some degree that question could be on many threads here...the answer would be because it is a hockey forum and people LOVE to discuss hockey.
