Which game would you recommend?

Post by markl »

I'm obviously new to the forum, and just had a question for all of those "in the know". I live in Indianapolis and am home from college for the Christmas break and looking for a trip. I read in the ESPN article about "the 100 things a sports fan should do" that a Minnesota high school hockey game is one of them. In Indiana basketball is king and this concept is kind of foreign to us.
Anyway, what recommendations would you all have for a particular game to see anytime from 1/1-1/8 or around that time frame. Maybe a big rivalry or a unique rink... basically just the best taste of Minnesota high school hockey. Well, any suggestions would be helpful.

1/1- Schwan's Cup Finals at Xcel Energy Center in St Paul. 3 games for 12 bucks of something like that.

Agreed, hopefully you will catch a glimpse of Duluth East, the future state champs.

He's probably going by the latest PS2 ratings posted at minnhock.com. Those ratings are very volatile this early in the season due to the lack of games each team has played.

I read a similar article, or maybe the same one, that listed the MN State High School Tourney as a must-see for sports fans. But the tourney isn't until March. The Schwan's Cup, 12/29 - 1/1 at the Xcel (one of the NHL's premier facilities) will feature many of the State's top teams. The State Tourney features 19,000 fan sold-out games, and you won't see that kind of crowd in the Schwan's Cup (or anywhere else). For more local flavor, Ilovethe212 listed some great games

Jan 3rd #3AAEden Praire at #1AABloomington jefferson 2:30 at BIG
Jan 6th #7AADuluth East at #10AABlaine 7:30 at Fogerty
Jan 8th #1ASt Thomas at #6AAHill Murray 8:00 at Aldrich

I would also add Stillwater vs White Bear Lake on 1/3, or Elk River vs Centennial on 1/8.

Here's a complete schedule. Find a time and arena/area that suits you and there should be a good game available.

I would go see EP at Jefferson and I'm pretty sure that the ESPN article was a high school game, while Sports Illustrated had an article about the state tournament.

if you want to watch a very intense game with massive amounts of minnesota high school hockey tradition, i'd go see eden praire @ jefferson on january third. this is at the Bloomington Ice Garden in bloomington, MN

(you can also tell all your indiana friends that you visited another bloomington)

If you could make it to the Schwan Cup Finals go there, but if you can't I agree with Redfire, Jefferson vs. EP should be a fun to watch with great atmosphere.

Go the the Eden Prairie v. Bloomington Jefferson game. Should be a great game and a good atmosphere.

The Schwan Cup will have excellent hockey - but a lackluster atmosphere (due to the sheer size of the Xcel Center). I've watched games there the last few years - you could hear crickets. 2000 people in a 19,000 seat facility is a lot different than 2000 people at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

Again, great hockey, but someone experiencing MN hockey for the first time should try to find a good rivalry and head to that one (if you cannot go to the State Tournament where 19,000 people pack the 19,000 seat Xcel Center). It'd be a much better 'total' experience.
