The numbers game

Post by 21troll »

To clear a lot of things up I hope that will end some discusions and bad mouthing between young adults and giving the Jr. Gold level (my players, remember my rules) a bad name.
I am not saying any of you are being disrespectful or name calling, its starting to get old.

Since I am familiar with the team, I know a little something about them.
I was going to sit back and just let it go but this conversation was discussed last year. This year, there was discussion about moving up to the A level. After discussion with high school coaches and the association, it was decided to try and get a B team and a 16U team, based off the numbers the 2 High school coaches told us they where going to take and cut. Therefore, declaration at this time was a B team for sure and add a 16u team to the metro league, as D8 DIRECTOR lets them go.

High school tryouts take place, expecting about 24 kids available, form two teams, and call on Farmington and Rosemount for additional players (sorry Freight train). Of the 7 returning players form last years team, 2 made JV at SOuth, 1 quit, 4 back on the team. FIrst night of tryouts, we finish with 12 skaters and a goalie. Second night of tryouts we are up to 17 skaters. At this point, it doesnt matter, all kids that tried out make the team, players where even told this after the tryout, 1 B team. Third night, ready to start practice, we are back to 13 (4 quit and dont want to play) skaters and 2 goalies. After practice, I talked to the level director asking about kids that got cut, trying to fill a roster of 15 skaters. We ended up with 16 skaters ( 1 injury already out 6 - 8 weeks). Here is the breakdown I have of kids and where they played last year:

2 Varsity
5 JV
4 JG B
2 Bantam B1
1 Bantam B2
1 Bantam C
1 No hockey last year
Both Goalies did not play hockey last year

This break down is probably very comparable to all D8 teams and other programs that do not have an A program: Roseville, Tartan, Buffalo (just guessing on the metro teams)

In regards to numbers and playing at the A level, it becomes a numbers game that is hard to predict in Spetember, October, Even November when mor einformation is known. Before the new high school, this was not a problem. All A teams, except4 Hopkins this year, get to pick the top 13 - 15 kids and cut the rest to a 16U or B team. Some temas don't have that luxury and ANY KID that comes out is on the team.

Questions or you want to talk more, you know where to find me.

Its easy to be humble when you play in the B league and half your team is off junior varsity or Varsity
