MN Selects
MN Selects is the longest running no profit tournament in the state of MN. The tournament is in St. Cloud, if you son or daughter has a chance to do it, I would as it is a great experience and good competition.

Coaches get info from teams within their boundries by contacting coaches/recommendations/scouting to form their teams.
I believe that you can send "them" information on your player, see the link:

Our son participated last year and had a great time. We knew nothing about the festival until the coach called and told us that our son had been recommended. If invited to return, our kid has already stated that he wants to participate again.
The fee included three practices, four games, the jersey and a t-shirt. There was a skills competition and the kids had a fun time with that. Also, no gate fee for spectators. It was well run, he made some new friends and the competition was good. We live within an hour so we only stayed in the hotel one night.

My daughter has done the Selects in St Cloud and the Elites in Blaine. Both are well run and she really loves being part of them. The competition has been good and most games are close. With the exception of the North team you will see alot of players from the Twin Cities.
It is a fun weekend and a good chance to meet some kids with the same interest. She now knows someone at every hockey tournament and softball tournament she plays in.
Get a room at what ever hotel your team is staying in and buy a sweatshirt the first day they always sell out.

selects
Why is the Selects tournament such a success??
Because it basically is a AAA tournament with AAA caliber teams loaded with the area's best players.
Interesting how so many people hate AAA but love Fargo and love this tournament, the 2 closest things to what happens all AAA winter long.
This is a great fun tournament though, you're child will get to play with some super kids and you'll meet great people from all over the place. Enjoy the fun and buy a guy a beer!!

First of all there aren't any "similar non-association teams" beyond the Wisconsin Fire.
Second, since this is Minnesota Selects it makes sense that the kids come from Minnesota based hockey teams. I think their site shows how the teams are made up by MN Hockey Districts (North, South, East and West) so the player would have to play in a MN Hockey District to qualify for an invitation. Maybe there's a Wisconsin Selects tourney for players on Wisconsin teams.

That is accurate. The kids have to be part of a Minnesota association to take part in this tournament. That excludes minnesota kids playing in other states.Alpha wrote:Heard a rumor that players participating on Wi Fire or similiarnon-association teams cannot play on MN Selects this year - is that accurate or not? Can anyone shed some light on that rumor? Or did I hear something that was incorrect?
Minnesota Selects
What ages for boys and girls are we talking about here? Also, who makes the selections?

Selects is the longest of any of the "SO Called Tournaments" Very good organization - quality coaches that make the experience fun for the kids and also educational. hopefully in the short week the coaches have the kids they can pick up a thing or two. The program is a "who's who" of MN great hockey players. Its amazing looking through that book and seing the names of kids that have been in it for multiple years. Honor to add your son / daughters name to that list. FUN!!

Are Selects and the Super Series the same weekend this year? Both are "all star" tournaments with N/S/E/W teams. In my opinion the tournament is tons of fun and well run, but don't be too disappointed if your player is not asked. Depending on who the coach is at your age level/geo. area, they sometimes scout a lot to try to get the best players, and sometimes don't. Often you get an invite if your son/daughter is a good player and you happen to know the coach or your kids are buddies.
I don't want to knock them because you will see many of the best players in MN scattered throughout all the age divisions and it's a lot of fun for the kids that play. It used to always fall over spring break so some of the families chose to take a little time off hockey and skip the tourneys. If you're invited and will be home, I'd recommend playing - they are typically very well run and a good weekend of quality hockey. If you don't get invited don't get upset - it is not the end of your player's career! It's really just one more tournament.

One interesting difference between Selects and the SuperSeries is that Selects goes by birth year and SuperSeries generally follows association year played the past season as does Classic Elite, e.g. major and minor (second year and first year) Squirts vs 1998 and 1999 birth years. So it really depends on where your kid falls in a given age bracket, which would be a better challenge for your player.
At the end of the day, they're all decent hockey, an opportunity to play with other kids and perhaps for a different coach. And while it's a good deal if everyone has fun, IMHO it's still checkbook hockey.

Yea agree with everyone I was a part of this tournament when I was young and still good at hockey [oh life was great before puberty...
].
It's a great experience and a lot of fun, a perfectly setup event for young kids who deserve some recognition for there hard work. Love that the coaches who are with the players every day, practices and games, get to nominate the players.
PS. He's right about those sweatshirts, they've sold out first day every year, so it's no secret there a big hit with the kids.
