I think there is little doubt as to what the premier holiday tourney in the state is. Last year both the last place finisher and the third place finisher in the GCC ended up in the state tourney. (Litchfield, SCC) Just to add to the depth a North Dakota state tourney team was also in the field. (Bismark Century)
The depth of the Schwan Cup pales in comparison to the depth of the GCC.

Cathedral? The best in the area? On what basis?
I expect Tech to win this in a close, tough fought game. Tech has four lines that can play with any team they will face -- some solid defensemen and two good goalies.

On paper, Tech. But of course, that's why they play the game.
Oh, and if Cathedral does manage to pull this out, I'll go out on a limb and say it will be the last time they'll win in a long time.

Cake walk? It's not going to be a cake walk for either teams. It will be a good, well fought game. It's going to come down to who wants it more, and the depth of the teams.HasNoMoves wrote:cathedral in a cake walk...by far the best team in the area...AGAIN...tech is alwasy so afraid to show they are inferior....now we will get to see!
Cathedral has an all-star, and a few guys to pickup the pieces. Tech has a little more depth, especially with their sophomore leading scorers.
Last year freshman Al Patten was in the pipes, this year it's been ex-eagle tender Cole Lundell.
Maiers is a solid tender, but he hasn't been tested, with an exception of Little Falls & Rochester Lourdes (both losses).
All in all, this will be a great game to watch. I'm pulling for Tech, but CHS has just as good of chance.
When hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there too.
3-3 Final Score
Sophomores Matt Hansen & Jobe Peterson both score in shootout for Tech.

Sorry, Cathedral is not the better team. They haven't beat anyone of significance this year. Who cares what they did last year? Last year is over. They have a different team.
Here we go again with the fluke thing. Every time they lose it's a fluke. Nope. They just weren't the better team in that game. Last year they were blown off the ice. A plastic bag with holes in it holds more water than your silly argument. They played, tied for three periods and an over time and lost the shootout. Them's the facts.

Lol. I was being sarcastic. I just thought it was funny last year when they got killed by tech and it was called a fluke by all the scc fans on hear. Funny how they arent all over this thread saying the same as last. If they played AA and played the teams tech plays things would be diferent.
And Goldy- I am not quite catching your sarcasm. Everone knows you dont like tech and get pleasure from scc and apollo. Your little thing about how the last place team and the third place team were in the state tourney only shows that if cathedral played big boy hockey in a decent section they wouldn't be so, parded the pun, "Holy."
Tech is the better team. Head to head. Not by who makes it to state or who gets ranked higher. Head to head.
And yes I realize it was a tie but for argument sake tech won the shootout.

I am completely neutral when it comes to these two teams. In fact, I am not even from St. Cloud. I just think it is humorous when someone things their team is so much better then the other after they just tied.
Puckluck commented on their schedules. I would not be bragging about the schedule tech plays. It is not all that impressive for a double A team.
St Cloud Cathedral has quality games against; Sartell, Alexandria, Little Falls, Roch Lourdes, Warroad, Hermantown, Orono twice, Mound twice, Duluth Marshall.
St. Cloud Tech has quality games against; Benilde, Elk River, Sartell, Warroad, Alexandria twice, Roseau twice, Moorhead.
I would say SCC has a tougher schedule this year, Warroad is probably better then roseau. Hermantown might be one of the best teams in the state beating AA teams. Little Falls, Lourdes, and Duluth Marshall are just as good as AA teams. Mound and Orono are no cake walk.
So far SCC beat Sartell 4-0, Tech won 6-4. Tech beat Sauk Rapids 4-3, Cathedral beat them 5-0. Cathedral beat Apollo 6-2, Tech beat them 4-2.
Cathedral outscored the same opponents 15-2 compared to Tech 14-9.
I would bet that Tech would have a worse record if they played cathedral's schedule this year.

very doubtful that tech would have a worse record than cathedral against the chs schedule.Tigers33 wrote:Very doubtful about what??
Their schedule isn't tougher. I believe it is. Whats your argument against that.
also, i do not believe that the chs schedule is tougher. some of the "tough opponents" you listed on cathedrals schedule you did not list on tech's. i am not looking for an argument on who is the better team and why because i personally could care less as they are neither in the same conference or the same section, i am just stating my opinion.

Chs looked very good tonight against warroad.
About the schedual and the AA comment. I was only trying to state that cathedrals seaon would have been alot different if you took the same kids, put them into techs spot. They wouldn't have gone to state. Just saying that going to state isnt a better comparason as to who is better. Head to head matchup is. Tech won that. We move on.
Predictions on tomorows tech warroad game? I think the pressure is on tech after tonights game.

Warroad will win.
After sitting on the bus for 4+ hours, your legs are slow, your mind isn't in it. Warroad was relying on their hands tonight. Cathedral came out with a great start (#8 scoring about 10 seconds into the 1st).
Tonight's game should have waken them up from their snooze. Tomorrow we will see a different team.

I find it funny that people compare teams based on how they played a third team -- i.e. CHS beats Warroad so if Warroad beats Tech, CHS is better than Tech. There are too many variables for this made up mathematics to work. One team beating another team one time is what it is. That team was ostensibly better that game, but chance and luck always play a role in any contest (as do a lot of other things). To extrapolate that out to mean anything else if foolish. Two teams would have to play each other numerous times to get a representative sample before anything more than just pure opinion would enter into the equation. We all have our favorites and our biases.........and our opinions. None of it is provable or knowable. So the good news is, no one is wrong.
Western, I have no biased opinions to either of these programs. I am just a fan of high school hockey.
The bottom line is St. Cloud tech has not beaten anyone of significance this season either. So you cant say that Cathedral hasn't beaten anyone, because either has Tech. It doesn't matter who won in the shootout, the game goes in the books as a tie. Teams are compared how they do against other teams they have played and their head to head record.
I would say the schedule Cathedral plays this year is tougher, because teams like Cloquet and Brainerd are really bad this year. Normally those are two quality teams. Little Falls, Roch. Lourdes, Duluth Marshall, Hermantown, and Warroad are just as good as some top 20 AA teams.
Tech plays a few teams that are in a down year; Roseau, Brainerd, and Cloquet. Roseau just lost to Alexandria.
Just so everyone knows a 4 hour bus ride is not an excuse to lose. These are kids, they have the energy to play through things like that. Some teams have a multiple hour bus ride every other game.
