Wayzata beat Eagan 8-2 and Chaska beat Centennial 4-0. Wayzata and Elk River won their pools with 6 points each. Wayzata had a goal differential of +13 in their three pool games. Elk River had a goal differential of +14 in their three pool games. Elk River gets the #1, Wayzata #2. Chaska gets the #3 seed with 5 points in its pool. Edina advances via wild card. It had 4 points in pool play as did Eden Prairie, but the Hornets had a goal differential of +9 versus Eden Prairie's +1.
If all the above is right at 8:00 AM tomorrow:
Wayzata plays Chaska
Edina plays Elk River
Yes, I was at the game yesterday. It was a good game to watch and both teams played exceptionally. It was so cleanly and skillfully skated that there were only 5 whistles (Ref stopping play) in the first 15 minute period. Both teams are to be congratulated.
The game was mostly transitional. Neither team could hold the offensive zone for any long period. The Trojans took shots at the goal when they gained the zone, Elk River tended to move the puck looking for that good shot.
Elk River had success by hitting a forward behind the Trojan's defense a couple of times and the solo rush on the goalie resulted in goals. The Elk River goalie played a very good game. Wayzata had better then 2-1 shot advantage for the game. The Trojan goalie had a good game also, just couldn't stop the breakaways.
Only 4 of the 11 teams have a winning league record. While Edina has lost some outside of District 6 to teams like Elk River and Wayzata, they are 11-1 in league play and are presently ranked #2 on the www.mnhockeyrankings.com website.
STILL going to say they fail to advance out of Districts? I'm of the impression no matter what Edina does on the ice you'll still keep slighting them in favor of your darlings Woodbury and Burnsville.
The simple fact remains - if you are forecasting based on this season's results Edina has to be considered a contender for the state crown. You may be right and they will be upset in District play, but that's just a hunch you have and the on-ice play makes it no more than a coin-toss or guess to go with Burnsville to reach state.
