Mistake? I don't think so

Was hoping Tartan could beat em with their full squad.

Nice call. How do you like the fact that your club couldn't beat Hill's modified/JV team? Typical Tartan people...talk all kinds of trash then eat crow afterwards. What does crow taste like?...chicken, I suppose.

You can keep referring to us as a rival & we will keep referring to White Bear.

Nice job today Pioneers during a tough time. Keep pluggin away and good things will come.

Nice excuse PPG Don't think your team appreciates being called a modified JV team
You must be proud
Hey we were short 3 top players too but I never dissed my own team like you just did .

thor, that was sarcasm...

Let's be a little more respectful of kids who did something wrong. There was a recent thread about this and everyone was being so forgiving of kids who screwed up.
Hopefully HM can pick up the pieces and not let any public school out of 4AA. I don't see either WBL or Stillwater competing with Hill. They'll probably lose to AHA and beat BSM and Moorhead, retaining the #1 seed. 2/3 will be up in the air until the Stillwater/WBL rematch on February 5th unless one team decides to really pick it up or fall of the wagon before then.

was at the game..strange mood there. This arena has seating on only one side. game started with a super somber mood on both sides..lots of hill parents in small groups whispering the details, sharing the sadness, sharing stories, the reactions...lots of rumors floating around about what the other teammates knew or did not know, who got called up to the JV team and why, is coach Lechner in the hot seat, how good this is for the student body to learn this life lesson, how proud of hill etc etc.

anyway the crowd at tartan is strange...tartan is obviously not a ockey school at all, they are more of a hoops and recently wrestling schooll thus they have little to no serious fan/student base. to give you an example there was not one organized group cheer from the Tartan side the entire game, not one "public School" or anything, they dont do that, they dont bring signs...For exmaple when Tartan would draw a penality and HM would go to the box (normally a pretty big deal in a game against Hill! you get a powerplay! normally a big deal with yelling and cheering) there would be like 4 Tartan parents clapping and dead quiet in the rest of the arena except for the backround noise of quiet conversation.....this arena was dead quiet for the first 2 periods...

in the 3rd when the game got tied 1-1 it turned more electric....there was smoe exciting close calls both ways..goalies played great..

lots of hill students and families know Tartan kids and families,,,groups of both schools kids everywhere hanging around and overall being very respectful and kind..same with the parents many know each other...sure a few "F" bombs here and there... a few pot jokes...but was most impressed by both student bodies...only thing strange is that Tartan does not have a strong, loud, organized rowdy hockey fan base at all that you might think for a game like that at home.... Seemed to be about twice the normal number of HM sutdents for this road game (granted its close to HM and lots of families neighborhoods, Oakdale, s Maplewood, Woodbury, etc.). I think to lend support and catch up on WHAT is all going on with this situation.

HM dressed 16 for the varisity and lost #16 there 2nd best defense Johnson who for sure did not play in the 3rd and Im not sure in the 2nd..dont know what happened...They were totally spent at games end but still dominated most of the OT but could not scores...

HM will have a struggle every game and them stillwater and WBL could all advance to state this year after this loss of the horses up front...

I would agree that some kids just don't get "it" Rather "sobering".
A little "who let the dogs out" chanting and sneak a smog machine near the gate as the Hill players entered the ice would have gotten the joint rockin'.??
nah
Guess they felt too kind and forgiving themselves (for the most part).

By the way the "MAN" upstairs always finds a way from turning bad things to good. I saw some of that last night already. Sorry don't think that means a State appearance this year for Hill, but ya never know - HE throws me plenty of curve balls to shake things up for HIS purpose not mine.

Absolutely the most accurate post of them all. Somethings I would like to add are that this "rivalry" plays out with the parents and not the kids. In the stands, multiple HM and Tartan students sitting together having fun, because they are friends, neighbors etc. Before the game the HM squad entered the arena and walked past the Tartan players, lots of smiles, handshaking and chatter. Bet that doesn't happen at WBL. On the ice in warmups, a Tartan goalie and HM goalie briefly stretch together at center ice, tap each other on the pads and go to the locker rooms. After the game, many Tartan players and HM players stop to chat on their way off the ice. No there were no chants, no banners, no signs... You know what though, there was alot of good things that showed. Hill players played their asses off, with a kind of determination that a defending State Champion plays with. Tartan players acted like young men, showing respect to their "friends." You saw what as a society we hope to see in our youth. You saw that friendships developed over the years meant something to the players, and that the game was just that...a game. And a damn fun game to watch at that! So to the students and players of both schools...congratulations, I for one am impressed by your sportsmanship and attitudes.

You guys hit the nail on the head. Your eyes did not deceive you at Tartan Arena. We came together more as friends and family than "rivals". In the end it was just a game, What you saw meant so much more.

A lot of good is already coming out of this unfortunate incident . I hope other teams and communities follow suit.

So what did the kids do? I think I've read everything on the two threads and it still isn't clear.

Let me try to clarify. While the JV game was going on, both teams stood together on the non public side of the arena. From the stands you could see them shaking hands, and talking to each other and laughing. This was all before the game. During warmups a Tartan goalie and a Hill goalie stretched and talked with one another at center ice. When warmups were over and the teams were putting all the pucks in the 5 gallon bucket, they skated over there and milled around talking to one another as they skated towards the locker rooms. I'm not saying it was world changing stuff, but, it was just a little bit unusual. The pre game and post game stuff was much more subdued than usual. Relaxed, friendly, certainly not like even last years game at Tartan or any other HS hockey game I've ever seen. Looked more like we were going to watch a summer scrimmage. During the game it was end to end action. Actually, I thought Tartan controlled much of the game. Or perhaps it was because Tartan definitely had the best scoring chances. Both goalies played well, Shaugnessy certainly looked poised as a sophmore. No really blatant cheap shots by either team. Tartan took an early unsportsmanlike conduct for shooting the puck after the whistle. But, thats about as chippy as it got. As a high school hockey fan it was really an outstanding game to watch. Hockey at it's best, hard clean hits, scoring chances for both sides and a gritty fortitude shown by the defending State Champions. Hill played their hearts out. Neither coaching staff was really ever heard yelling at the refs or players, and both coaching staffs had their boys ready to play. It was said before Tartan is not a hockey school. That is true, just three banners hang in the arena. Looks like 2 state tournament appearances in their entire history. But, I did see a really nice, young hockey team in Tartan. They were every bit as fast as Hill Murray yesterday, every bit as determined as Hill Murray. Maybe not as polished, or quite as skilled as Hill Murray, or doesn't have the depth. But, yesterday I saw two teams that I think really came together and had fun. In the end, isn't that what it's all about? I had fun, the students in the crowd had fun, the arena certainly made some money. I said it before, best $6 i've spent. I also got a chance to see a bunch of 16-18 year old boys, act like men. For that my hat is off to both teams!!! =D>

Clown - check with some of your Edina buddies but leave it off the board out of respect for the kids/families and HM.

Sounds like a great game last night!! Congrats to both the hard working HM team and the stand up Tartan team!

Rules violations. If it's that important call the school and ask what they did.

 i want to apologize for my stupid predictions and comments yesterday. shaugnessy played awesome, the HM Club played with a huge amount of heart. that was the most fun i've ever had at a hockey rink. we make stupid mistakes, give them a break. I know 3 of the 4 guys, and they're good dudes, not creeps. I'm also proud of how the titans played as a team and how our school represented themselves.

Hill won the JV game 7-4, but it was 4-4 gomae ealry in the third period. No decision has been made on who will be brought up from JV since they really haven't had a practice since the four players left the team. Also, does anyone have any word on Jordan Johnson's condition, since he did not play in the third period yeaterday? Hill wilbe fine on the blue line with Johnson, Casto, Cotroneo, Stadler and Bruchu, but another injury to that position will really hurt them.

it was 3-3 to start the 3rd and then HILL JV just crushed and scored
4 goals..... most of them high shots..goalie had trouble with those...7-3 then less about 1 min 45 seconds left Tartan got one back..hill JV crushed.

dont know on Johnson...I cant recall if he played at all in the 2nd either not thinking of it.

I think that Hill is going to get better than how they played against Tartan with the players they have as the season goes on. Obviously those who were dismissed for the team are going to be a big loss, but once the JV guys get used to playing with everyone else I think will make Hill stronger. I believe they still have a chance at making it to state, and that is coming from a completely unbiased person.

Hill played well

Post by D-fense »

Hill played pretty good, they just don't have much for natural goal scoring. Tartan was really good and held off the top Hill line pretty well and when they didn't the goalie stood on his head.

Hill will miss the points from those four guys for sure but they played well and had the better opportunities, goalie just stonewalled them.

Considering this was H-M's first game without the four players, the Pioneers seem to have played a decent game on the road.

People need to remember that the line combinations are entirely new, which means it may take some time for them to "gel". Sure, the Pioneers may have lost some solid talent off the top line, but it doesn't mean they don't have depth that can carry them along, especially with the section that they are in. By hard work, Zepeda, Westerhaus, Holler, Faust, and Walsh are all capable of putting pucks in the net on a consistant basis.

From here on out, the Pioneers need to simply re-group and play their hearts out. Remember, they have a solid young goaltender, steady defensemen, and depth that can carry them at forward.

They are the Hill-Murray Pioneers and nothing is changing that.

I don't disagree with this comment. Their behaviors and issues don't need to be the focus of attention in a thread. However, the same should hold true for ANY school that has this happen - and that hasn't always been the case.

From experience, I have seen how hard the "gossip" is for the rest of the team to overcome. Many youth hockey players share the same dream - to play high school hockey. Not only should people respect the privacy of the kids who made poor choices, they need to respect those that are left on the ice. Those that work hard, play hard and follow the rules deserve the utmost respect - lets focus on what a great job they can or have done despite the turmoil their team has faced. They truely deserve the attention and focus!
