Looks like the Star Tribune has most of the story. Who knows the rest?

Thoughts and prayers are with the Lucia family.

I just wish people would leave this guy alone. For him to have to come on to the FSN broadcast last night to give an update and deny all the rumors was just wrong. In time, the story will be told and let it be.

Reminds me of last year when many on the message boards were all over Minnesota's/Hill Murray's Nick Larson for apparently quitting hockey, being burned out, etc. Once the truth came out that he had a back/spine injury, his leaving hockey made total sense. He would have risked too much to attempt to play last year.

observer85's comments raise some interesting questions about where the line is between privacy of a public person and the public's right to know.
In lucia's case, the public should know as much as possible, given that Lucia is an employee of a public university, dozens of athletes around the continent have a direct interest in his viability as a coach and his being the leader of one of the nation's leading college hockey programs.

I think there is a place where the public can know what it needs to know while at the same time reserving some privacy for lucia and his family.

in general, the school should release enough to give the public the ability to measure how serious his illness might be and what impact it might have on his future as a coach.

anything less, any crisis management consultant will tell you, will fuel the rumors that so many people find disgusting.

the best way to dispel rumors is to address them and say as much as is possible.

I'd like to read any responses that don't degenerate into name-calling or useless blather.

From what I've heard he has no clue as to what it is. Might help if they get it figured out before they go releasing things...

Also, from what I recall medical history/information is covered under doctor/client privilege. Doesn't matter where he works, he doesn't have to release jack.

Let him and his doctors figure out what it is and what they are going to do, the public doesn't need to know anything yet.

The University doesn't really even need to know what it is, much less the public. The public isn't the judge, they don't hire or fire him.

a few misconceptions in that last response:

yes, there is doctor/patient privilege. that doesnt mean a patient MUST keep things private, only that they can if they wish. also, you can speak publicly before EVERYTHING is known. i like how maturi and lucia handled things by appearing together. more of that will keep the information flow tempered by facts while at the same time informing the public -- as best as possible -- about a publicly supported asset.

Only change I would make to your response, is "as best as necessary". I think that being a public figure, we all want to know everything, but only really need to know that he's not feeling well but will be back when he can be. If there was no response, then the rumors would be flying. At least we feel like we are "in the loop" even if we have no reason to be there. 8)

I hope the best for Don and his family. If the U keeps up posted, like they have been, then all we really need to do is keep them in our thoughts.

I think the problem is when idiots in the media speculate on a health situation without facts to back their comments up. Observer85 is right. When a "professional" in the media is throwing gossip out there, it is disgraceful. The intregrity level has really sunk in the media and it is part of the reason newspapers, etc. have really gone down hill in quality.

As far as informing people (recruits, etc) on what the issue is, I am sure that will happen when they actually know specifics. I agree that it is unfortunate that a guy has to come out and make a statement like that before he even knows what the scoop is.

I was embarrassed for Dark Star on WCCO driving home after the Brown game, as he called into the radio post game show to announce that he had found out that Lucia had Bells Palsy, only to force Don to have to come out the next night on TV to dispel that, because the doctors & Don honestly don't know what is wrong at this point... The media gets that zest to get the scoop too much at times and it only hurts all parties most of the time...

If you -- or anyone -- think of Dark Star as having any media/journalism/reporting credentials, then that's a problem right there.

Darko is a joke, has no credibility and should never been seen as a reliable source. Please do not clump him in with other more professional media sources.

I take it you have no idea what Bell's Palsy is. Funnier instead of taking the time to look it up you decide to call someone out as having no credibility.

Bell's palsy is a diagnosis of exclusion, when after tests no underlying causes can be determined Bell's palsy is then the diagnosis. If after more tests an underlying cause can be determined Bell's palsy can be ruled out, if not the condition is continued to be referred to as Bell's palsy. It doesn't take a medical genius to figure out, based on what's been said, that at least for now Bell's palsy is probably what the affliction is since the only way to rule out Bell's palsy is to find another diagnosis.

Bell's palsy is weakness or paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face. The affected side of the face looks flat and expressionless or droopy.

Would that really keep the coach off of the bench for two weekends not to mention the practice time? It appeared that he spock and looked just fine when he was on the air last weekend.

Is there any update on his condition or what they tests came back as?

A good friend of mine has this affliction currently, and it is no laughing matter. Dark is a joke for jumping to a "scoop", pure and simple. It's embarassing. If you watched Don on TV the next night, he denied this rumor, and looked pained to have to do that at the news conference.

I wish Don all the best, and a speedy recovery from whatever it is that ails him. He is a very good coach, and having met him several times, he is very nice man as well.

Goldy, you may want to diagnose your own exclusion.
