2008-09 Best Private School Team? Who's #1.

Post by Messier »

What is the best private school this year in the State of Hockey?

Hill - was but the loss of 4 players will hurt, but do not be surprised if they make some noise come tourny time.

Breck - ? Do not know much on them.

Blake - ? Same as above.

Marshall - Do not look to be as deep as in the past.

CDH - Are they young? Thought they would be better this year.

BSM - Lost some good players, thought the experience of returning players would make this team a top team this year.

AHA - I do not like there conference very weak for a team that should be one of the best year in and year out. Have a very good non-conference schedule 4 very tough games vs. non MNHS teams. Can Danny M, play like he did vs HM, the rest of the way and carry this team to state? Maybe in the hardest section with the top 3 teams in the state, 2 teams going home that could win it all.

STA - Would like to see them step up and make the move to AA, very good team, most likely your A champs this year.

All the private schools should be in one section then only one can go to state. No there spread all over the sections so nearlly all of them can go, what a joke :x

Another joke is that somebody has to come out of Section 8 this year. Maybe they should decline this year & allow somebody from the cities (maybe even a private school) go to state.

WHAH! WHAH! WHAH!

State should be about the best 8 teams in each class battling it out for the title(s), which for the most part it is.

Now to answer the question, my take is as follows;

1. AHA
2. STA
3. Breck
4. Benilde
5. Hill
6. SCC
7. Lourdes
8. CDH
9. Marshall
10. Totino

and then I still think Hill over BSM.

Ram Warrior,
With the exception of Marshall, SCC, Lourdes and maybe few misc small schools, if schools weren't allowed to opt up, I'm pretty sure most (possibly all) of the private schools would occupy two sections...

But all i can say is watch out for them around section time.........

Is St. Thomas just trying to win 5 or 10 championships before they jump to AA??? They should feel pathetic that they walk all over everyone in single A when they should be playing some true competition.

Ramwarrior, based on what you posted it would be:
1
Lourdes
2
Blake
Breck
Holy Angels
3
Cretin
4
Hill Murray
St Thomas
5
Cathedral
6
Benilde
7
Marshall

-Cretin and St Thomas are literally 2 miles apart, if they were left out of the same section, that would be silly.
-I said aside from Marshall, Cathedral and Lourdes (I would like to add Benilde to that list) because, although private, they are not in a section that is dominated by private schools.
-If it happened, yes, there would be private schools in every section aside from 8, but they would only have more than one in 3 sections (possibly 2), there would be maybe one or two AA private schools because of enrollment and far less at A state.
-Both tournaments would be so much better.

Private Schools

Post by stpaul »

Just for the record It is 6.7 miles from Cretin to St. Thomas Academy.

In my fantasy HS hockey world there would be a private school state championship tournament held every February or over Christmas. It could be 3-4 games built into the 25 regular season games. These schools have great rivalries & traditions - with HM, AHA, STA, CDH, BSM, TG & D-Marshall. There could be a play in bracket with the smaller private school teams the week before.

In a real world we would have a Christmas tourney:
Men's division would be:
AHA, CDH, Benilde, HM
In the boys division would be:you know who.......Opt up and then we can have a real tourney.

But in this world we could have:
AHA, CDH, BSM, HM, STA, RL, Holy Family and SCC.

Play it at Richfield and play both varsity and JV over three days.
A real Christmas Tourney. have the Archbishop lead the tourney and pass out the trophies.

That makes no sense. They all go because they are all good and if you want the state tournament to have the best teams it makes sense for them to be spread out. I suppose you could put them all in one section and we will all know that it is the real state tournament.

Agreed section 8 is a joke. I think that only one team from outside the metro area should be allowed to go to the tourney. This would allow the best teams to play in the state tournament. Maybe then both Jefferson and Edina could go to the state tournament.

 Here is the map:

http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/googlemap.as ... &dclass=AA

They're arranged pretty logically geographically. Not only that, it is entirely possible to have a state tournament involving 7 teams in the immediate metro area, and Buffalo as the 8th. 7 of 10 teams in the allegedly "northern" Section 7AA are in the north metro or immediate vincinity. It's just that the other 3 are the only ones who ever win the thing. It's a similar story in 8AA, as Roseau and Moorhead, by far the furthest from the Metro, are the best.

Furthermore, since the establishment of AA in 93-94:
1dt/2nd/3rd place finishes by section at State Tourney:
1AA (south MN): 0/0/1
2AA (SE/cent Metro 94-07, now S Metro): 1/2/2
3AA (NE Metro 94-07, now SE Metro): 1/1/0
4AA (N Metro 94-07, now NE/cent Metro): 3/1/1
5AA (SW Metro 94-07, now N Metro): 4/0/0
6AA (West Metro): 1/1/2
7AA (NE MN): 2/3/6*
8AA (Cent/NW MN): 2/5/1

*: one of the 3rds out of 7AA was Elk River. The other top 3s are by either East or Rapids. All of 8AA's are Moorhead or Roseau.

By this measure, sections 7 and 8 have been pretty consistently the strongest at the state tournament. They just happen to have a lot of normally good teams down this year.

You would actually choose a tournament format of just 1 weekend/3 games per school vs. 14 games, 7 home and homes per school? Talk about a tradition to look forward to. Would be one of the best conferences in MN, if not the best. Then the teams would then decide which school is the best private school each year and who are men and who are boys, regardless of class.

Also, no one could complain about bracketing, seeding, draw or home ice advantage either.

Would they need refs at these games? Privates never break the rules!
