How would you change region format?
Leave it as is...
Leave it as is except tweak the Sunday games....
Go back to the old system - Maroon, Gold, Silver...
Go back to the old system - Maroon & Gold
Any other new (or old) ideas.....

I would like to see a double elimination tournament at the beginning or when the final four are decided. I think it is stupid that you can win all your region games, except the last one and you miss out on state, where as, a team could theoretically go 1-2-0 in the pool play and win the sunday game and go to state. If you make it a double elimination tournament right away or at the end, the best teams would be more likely to reach state. Teams could still upset and go to state, but they would have to earn it. I don't think going 2-2 in a tournament is earning it.
I have to admit I am a fan of the old double elimination tournament. You always knew you could have one stinker game in Regions and still have a chance to work your way back through the back door. In the current format you lose one and you might be done.
I dont recall the circumstance, but I believe Centennial as PeeWees two years ago went 2-1 in pool play and did not make it to Sunday. I remember thinking that was not right.
I just feel that a team should have to lose twice at the end of the year - either in districts or regions - before their season is done.

Regions
Gold Region:
Districts 11, 12, 15 and 16 get 3 teams to state. Run the tournament however you like.
Silver Region:
Districts 1, 4 and 5 get 1 team to state. Also, run the tournament however you like.
Maroon Region:
Districts 2, 3, 6, 8 and10 get 4 teams to state. Run two 8 team double elimination tournaments, just like before. Each district gets 3 teams that go to regions for a total of 15 teams. A wild card team would be the 16th team and could be decided by a play in game between two districts on a rotating basis.
My 2 cents.

Re: Regions
How do you administer that year to year? What happens if the current powerful districts get weaker over time and some of the weaker districts get more powerful? What's the formula for determining those numbers in the future?DumpandChase1 wrote:Gold Region:

If we want to make this a true and great state tourney lets make sure the best teams (or the ones that beat them) get there every year. Here is how you do it.
Teams are seeded coming from their district tourneys as a 1, 2, and 3. At that point they are divided up and play in different regional tournaments with winners and runners going to the state tourney. Regions would rotate between Cities and out state every other year. There is already travel involved for regional tourneys this just makes the cities teams travel as well. Each regional tourney is a double elim.
For example:
Region 1
D1 – #1
D5 – #3
D11 – #2
D12 - #3
D16 - #2
D10 – #2
D2 – #1
D6 – #1
Region 2
D1 – #2
D5 – #2
D3 – #1
D10 – #3
D15 – #1
D2 - #3
D4 – #1
D6 – #2
Region 3
D1 – #3
D12 – #2
D16 – #1
D3 – #2
D15 – #2
D8 – #1
D8 – #3
D5 - #1
Region 4
D4 - #2
D11 – #1
D16 - #3
D10 – #1
D15 – #3
D2 – #2
D8 – #2
D12 - #1
off year #1
D4 - #3
D11 - #3
D3 - #3
D6 - #3

Regional Format
Elliott,
The old Maroon/Gold Region format was great. If the goal is to have the best 8 teams at state, then GOOD LUCK! There is no format for that. The State Tournament is all about David vs Goliath and the opportunity that exists for every team to have a chance to play the game of there lives and upset the big dogs to get to State.
The old format allowed the outstate the opportunity to be represented. The reality is that the powers are in the metro. Would MH Hockey ever entertain a 16 team state tourney. Expand the regional qualifiers using a similar allotment of outstate and metro teams (as the old format allowed). You still would not get the BEST 16 teams, but you would certainly get a larger portion of the better teams. Maybe format the regionals to allow 4-6 outstate and 10-12 metro teams.
My 2 cents worth.

I think the format should be completely revamped.
First thing that has to happen is Districts have to be realigned. I would like to see MH go to an 8 District/Region set up. Make these districts/regions as close to what the high school league has set up for their sections as possible. The districts/regions would obviously be larger than the high school sections because you aren't seperated by A and AA schools as well as logistically there needs to be flexability with how the Regions are set up. So now we have our 8 regions.
Each region can have a true elimination tournament to send a region champion to the state tournament. The region tournament could be single or double elimination, I prefer single elimination simply because if an Eden Praire loses to a Shakopee, Shakopee shouldn't have to be asked to beat a powerhouse again in a back door game. Single elimination also forces teams to bring it every night and if they don't then they go home. The problem with single elimination tourneys are, if team has to travel a 2 or 3 hours and only gets to play one game, well thats not very cost effective. The other part of this which I like is it can eliminate one of the playoff tournaments which will of course cut down on cost for parents.
Yes, there is a chance that the #1 and #2 or #3 team in the state could be in the same region, but who says those team have to play in the state final to make it a storybook finish. If they play off in a Region final isn't that just as gratifying? Lets be honost, only one team gets to win the whole thing so if you are eliminated in the state tournament or the region tourament whats the difference.
In my opinion, this format is the purest way to widdle down to a state tournament field.
My other line of thinking is, Minnesota Hockey is all about developing high school hockey, hence the reason our ages are different from the rest of the country. Why not start developing those rivalries early. I've always thought it was funny that Roseau and Moorhead play to get to the state tourney in high school but in bantams they are in different regions. I think this format makes it more special. You'd have 8 true region champions playing for a state title. Every Region would have quality teams in it. If those perinnial powerhouses don't make it, it is because some one knocked them off and a team that isn't ready to play on a given night should pay the price for that.
This is just my two cents. I'm sure there are flaws in my system, but there really isn't going to be a perfect system for most folks now a days. Well at least until you start giving everyone State Champion
Trophies.

The way it stands rivalries do get developed early, take District 15: Fergus Falls, Moorhead, Alexandria, Detroit Lakes, Little Falls.....untill Moorhead quit playing some of them in HS, they all played each other and had great rivalries. D16 is made up of teams that primarily are in section 8a and ALL of them are rivals...same in IR......wannagototherink wrote:I think the format should be completely revamped.

Leave the regions as they were and let only 2 from a district in....

What makes the High school tourney the most sought after tourney in 50 states, SINGLE ELIMNATION you loose and you go to summer camp. Winners keep playing, there is no way outstate would be able to travel for a double elimination tourney,,
Now for those people that think everything should be double elimation then maybe we should have another election for president, just because maybe one had a bad day?
OPPPS forgot we got that in the senate race looks like they are going to be best out of three just like old tv wrestling shows
LOSE AND YOU GO HOME -----thats pretty simple and will save lots of money
