What's with that Jones kid from UND? A defenseman lining up on wing and dropping his gloves and helmet, ready to fight, right from the faceoff?
Where does he think he is..................the NHL in 1970? What a complete arse.
Yeah - any reports or stories anywhere about this guy? Total melt down, seemed to be unprovoked. Reminded me of the Hirsch melt down.

Arse for sure... someone forgot to teach him that when you get into a fight the only thing that you really want to leave on is your damn helmet. I'm sure his teammates are giving him _ _ _ _ for that bonehead move...WayOutWest wrote:I didn't see it. They got outworked yet again.........easily. Jones and Lucia were yapping all night and I'm sure Lucia said something to indicate he wanted to dance. Then when the puck drops, he skates away. And I'm sure the spear Lucia gave Trupp had something to do with it.ya-man wrote:WayOutWest wrote:I didn't see it. They got outworked yet again.........easily. Mattthe bat, perhaps you can explain why Stoa checked Hextall into his own goalie, and then when Hextall was laying flat on his back, Stoa decided to jump on him. I suppose to you that would be sportsman like. There's no difference between the two actions, except that you don't hear the Sioux fans whine about it. Bottom line is that the Gophers shouldn't try and get physical with the Sioux because it is something they cannot win. Just try and enjoy your season and stop trying to measure up to the Sioux because you'll always be chasin!!

It appears UND is doing the chasing at the moment... behind in the standings and WAY behind in the most important aspect.... the pairwise rankings. The Sioux may not even make the NCAAs given they are sitting in the 20s right now and they play rather inconsistently.gorilla1 wrote:Just try and enjoy your season and stop trying to measure up to the Sioux because you'll always be chasin!!
Maybe you should just enjoy last weekend's results. Cause it is looking like those two games could be the biggest wins the Sioux get this year.

They did manage a tie with Tech, must have left it all on the ice last weekend.Gopher Blog wrote:It appears UND is doing the chasing at the moment... behind in the standings and WAY behind in the most important aspect.... the pairwise rankings. The Gophers took those guys out when they tried to fight them we just totally dominated them. I wouldnt be saying anything about us trying to get physical and we just cant win because we did get physical with them and we beat them at it.gorilla1 wrote:Bottom line is that the Gophers shouldn't try and get physical with the Sioux because it is something they cannot win.
What a shame UND won't play the Gophs again this year. The perfect storm last weekend I think the Souix better take advantage when 3 of our guys just came off the world jrs. How many did the Souix have? Oh thats right, they're resting on their lorals of yester year. Too bad, I really doubt they make it to St Paul.
Ya-man, The Gophs probably would have, but they were too busy trying to line up their outstanding teams for next year's Dodge Classic hockey tournament next year. The Gophs were outplayed in every facet of the game--and don't say it was about effort when they got pounded as badly on Saturday. I would give you one night of being down, but not two. Typical Gopher fan--making excuses--the U players should feel really proud too given how well team USA did (was it 5th place--wow).
Gopher Blog, I really do enjoy your posts. I do agree with you that UND has played inconsistently over the course of the year--however, if you look at UND's last 15 games they are 11-3-1. The U is 7-5-3 and is playing far more inconsistently at this stage then UND. The Gophers strength (goalie) is now at least in a little bit of doubt. Without Kangas playing the way he played last year, it will be another "one and done." Say what you want, but the Gophers are not a deep team. As far as biggest wins--UND handed Cornell its only loss of the year (7-2) which is a much better win then beating an average Gopher team. Finally, by saying chasing, I mean the 7 championships that UND has, which is more then the U, Duluth, St. Cloud, Mankato, the Wild, and the North Stars have combined (5)--not bad for a little school on the prairie.
Mattthebat, you don't even make sense--are you really trying to say that the Gophers are as physical as UND? Historically, (this year included) the U is more of a finesse team and UND is more physical. If you don't think so, can I have some of whatever you're taking??

Enough said about that.
The Sioux got Denver in town this weekend. A Sioux sweep puts them in first place no matter what. This is a big weekend in the WCHA. Mankato and UMD battle, while SCSU and CC face off. Believe it or not but a sweep for UAA puts them at .500 and gives them something to play for down the stretch. Nine teams still have a legitimate shot at an at-large bid. A lot has to fall into place for some, but look at Wisconsin last year. It should get interesting.
Updated Pairwise and RPI rankings (1/19):
Minnesota - 4 PWR, 6 RPI
Denver - 8 PWR, 7 PRI
Minnesota-Duluth - 13 PWR, 14 RPI
North Dakota - T14 PWR, 15 RPI
Wisconsin - 17 PWR & RPI
Colorado College - T19 PWR, 19 RPI
St. Cloud State - 24 PWR
Minnesota State - 27 RPI
Alaska-Anchorage - 32 RPI
Michigan Tech - 47 RPI

Personally, I think anything below CC in the PWR right now can forget it. SCSU is way too inconsistent (especially on the road) to expect them to move up into the top 12 or 13. Minnesota State falls in that same realm. UAA and Tech have no shot (barring some total miracle and winning the WCHA playoff title.

Very nice, but...
Many of those NoDak teams were loaded w/ 22 yr old Canadian freshman, and 26 yr old "seniors"...

MN has done it w/ our own kids, 18-22 yrs of age, just a point of pride I will make...

DmanDad,
Interesting post, but I am used to the Canadian and "old freshman" routine :D
Brings up an interesting point though, would you rather win, or would you rather have a majority of home state kids play for your team?
I'd rather win because, like any sport in any other place in the Country, no one cares where the kids come from. No one cares that most kids playing football at Florida aren't from at Florida, or kids playing basketball at Duke aren't from North Carolina, or kids playing baseball at Fresno State aren't from California. It just reminds me of the little boy on the play ground saying things to try and impress the older kids.
Oh well, an interesting point in any event.

I disagree with everything you have just said. This is the difference between U fans and NoDak fans. You care more about the championships then the kids themselves. I would much rather watch Minnesota born players win like they have then watch any of those championship NoDak teams with their imported players.gorilla1 wrote:DmanDad,

Puck the Sioux, Go Gophers.
I suppose that's your answer Biscuit when you know you can't match the success of UND. It's kind of cute the way you fall back on that. So each year that the U loses in the first round, do you justify it by saying "at least a majority of our guys are from Minnesota?" Whatever comforts you as you watch UND move on. Wow, I wonder how every other sports fan in America deals with their team's success when they realize they have won championships with imports.

We are talking about 5 championships vs. 7, minimal differences, but yes, congrats to the Sioux... Small tidbit, but relevant, Gophers lead all-time series w/ NoDak, 137-124-12...gorilla1 wrote:I suppose that's your answer Biscuit when you know you can't match the success of UND. But gorilla, you keep missing the point of pride that the Gopher hockey fan base carries, we watch young men play great hockey for Roseau, Hill-Murray, White Bear, Edina, Grand Rapids, and so many other MN High Schools, and they create lastly memories for all of us, and some even display their talents in the best high school tournament in the country, the MN State HS Hockey Tournament. Then many of those exceptional young men from all over the State of Hockey are put together on a team, a team comprised of only MN kids (yes, some exceptions!), and we get cheer for them again for hopefully another 4 years at the U of M. That is why I support the Gophers so vehemently... that is why my father & I buy season tickets together every year... That is why I am so proud of the Gophers, and why no other team in the country can duplicate what the Gophers have, in any other sport, let alone hockey... It simply goes farther than being proud of our Gophers, there is inherent pride of our State of Hockey that goes w/ it, and North Dakota Sioux fans cannot get their minds around that...
You should be proud of the Sioux, and their great college hockey history, but please do not belittle Gopher fans for their pride or accomplishments...
I hope that this has given you some small perspective from a MN hockey fan, a Gopher fan...

Thanks for the reply Dmandad.
First, there is not a "minimal" difference between 5 and 7 championships. How long has the U been playing hockey for them to win even 5 championships? The answer is 61 years. At this rate, they will play 24 more years before they win 2 more championships. I am not "belittling" winning 5 championships, that is a good accomplishment.
As far as belittling the U fans, not trying to do that. It's ironic though how you can take shots about 26 year old freshman and Canadians, and that to you apparently is not belittling to the NoDak fans. Do you see a suggestion anywhere in the posts in this thread that suggests that U fans would rather have a majority of the kids being from their home state, then win championships with "imported players??" Is that intended to belittle the UND fans and their program? Do you really believe that there are more then a few people out there who would care where the kids are from if they are winning? Yes, I understand that it may "add" to the accomplishment of winning--but winning is more important then the hometown of the kids. That's college sports. And spare me Biscuit about caring for the kids--what do you ever do for them other then occassionally watch the Gophers on TV? If you mean support the kids instead of care for the kids, ok. In that event, why don't you look at the attenedance between the 2 teams this year--and by the way, the UND fans actually use the ticket they buy instead of leave it empty like I see it happen at the U too often.
As far as Minnesota hockey pride, I have lived in Northern Minnesota while my kids played hockey. I am well aware of Minnesota pride. Minnesota is the greatest state for hockey for high school kids and under, no doubt about it.
As far as the upper levels of hockey, that's where it ends. There are many other programs that are as good if not better then the U. Say what you want, but winning championships is the measuring stick of a successful program. The U has been represented nicely, and I never said you should not be proud of it. But what you seem to have a hard time "wrapping your head around" is the fact that there are other more succssful programs out there. As an example, Michigan, UND, Denver, and Wisconsin have all won more championships then the U. Further the states of Michigan, North Dakota, Colorado, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin have all won more championship (collectively in each state) then Minnesota. Instead of giving kudos to the other teams and programs, the "envy" appears and the only thing that U fans say is that "at least we do it with a majority of our own kids." My only point to that is that if that is how you justify it (that the U hasn't been as successful as other programs) to yourself, great.
By adhereing to such a standard, Minnesota passes on alot of kids who are just flat out better then the kids they get at the U. The U gets its fair share of talent, no doubt. But they could do much better if they mixed in more kids that you consider to be "imports" onto their team. They would have several more championships by now if they would simply adopt a broader philosphy regarding recruiting out state kids. And you would be celebrating just as hard if the U won it with 2 Minnesota kids as you would with 10. Biscuit, I marvel at the pollyanna view you have with your Gopher team.
I wish the Gophers good luck this year, and they have as good of chance as anyone to win so long as Kangas gets back on track.

As a Sioux alum/fan that grew up in the Cities, I will say that how they assemble their team from primarily Minnesota kids is pretty unique and neat to see. But before you take a shot at UND for recruiting kids out of the Canadian juniors, you have to look and see that other teams across the country are doing the same thing. If I'm not mistaken, UND has also stolen some top Minnesota kids recently (Finley, Oshie) and have more in the pipeline (Gleason, Kristo, Forbort, Fink, and both Mattson's).
