Girls Rankings

Post by HockeyMom5 »

Rank the girls teams and how much credence do you give to "Let's Play Hockey" rankings?

U12B
U12A
U14B
U14A
and so on.......

The LPH rankers are usually coaches or managers from the level that they rank--some years they're really whacked out because there aren't many volunteers and they only see a small fraction of the teams in the state. Last year was almost laughable at the U12A level. This year the U12A seems to be right on though. U14A is pretty good from what I've seen. Don't know about the B levels in those two.

The only problem I can seee with the rankings are that Let's play hockey is basing the rankings on scores that are sent in to them. Some teams just don't send them in so how can it be an accurate ranking system?

Some strong U12B teams that I've seen so far:

Proctor* - 2 girls that are dynamite players
Alexandria* - 1 girl that could probably play on almost any varsity team
Owatonna* - Nice solid nucleus
Cloquet* - Move the puck as well as any team I've seen
New Prague* - Solid goaltending and good puck movement
Lakeville Red - Hard to imagine how good their A team is after seeing this team

*denotes 'hybrid' teams that don't field A teams
Don't sweat the small stuff.
It's all small stuff.

I think LPH does an decent job with U12A.

1 LAKEVILLE
2 Edina Green
3 Eden Prairie
4 Wayzata
5 Burnsville
6 Inver Grove Heights/
South St. Paul
7 Cottage Grove
8 Andover
9 Blaine
10 Champlin Park

They might be missing a couple D2 teams, and I'm not sure they know D10 real well, but they do get D6 and D8 right.

U12B is all over the place:

1 CENTENNIAL RED
2 Mahtomedi Blue
3 Wayzata Blue
4 Princeton
5 Proctor
6 Lakeville Red
7 Lakeville Gold
8 Eden Prairie Black
9 Tartan
10 North Metro

That Centennial team is indeed the best team at this level. But the rest of this is speculative. Here, they downgraded D6 - the other Eden Prairie team and the two Edina teams are very good. It's the Gold team from Wayzata that's real good, not the Blue one. B games are sometimes dominated by one or two "A" players who probably shouldn't be in the B division, but for some reason they are. If those players are gone or have a bad game, the team doesn't look as good. But these ratings are only as good as the people sending in the information. I wish LPH would just do a little homework and visit the District sites, but it's another example of how boys' and girls' hockey is treated differently.

He might have been looking at the U10's.

I do agree that 12B is hard to rank

I really enjoy the LPH rankings and think they do a pretty good job.
With only the top ten listed there is a better chance for deserving teams to be left off the list.
Does anyone know how to volunteer to do rankings for LPH?

They appreciate your participation. It might be a little late in the year right now but they were asking for volunteers earlier in the season.

The 12A rankings should see the addition of Anoka to the top 10. They are playing some really nice hockey for about 2 weeks...I would look at them to come out of D10 this year.

I would agree that Anoka is looking pretty good but there are 6 other teams in district 10 that are looking very good Andover, Buffalo, North Wright County, Blaine, Champlin, and Centennial. Anyone of these teams could beat each other on any given night, this is a very strong distict this year. I would say that anyone of these teams could come out number one in the district but from what I here there will be 5-teams from this districts going to regions so the seven teams will have to battle it out.

All of those are very good squads. How do they divide up the two separate divisions in D10? Not exactly equal talent.

How can 5 teams come out of this district? Aren't there 8 teams that advance to their regional tournament. What other districts will compile the other 3 teams?

8 team do advance to National Region...comprised of:
D8 has 3 teams advance
D5 & D10 have 5 teams advance

ooh, i didnt realize disctict 5 only had a few 12a teams. So the district 5 teams will play in the district 10 tournament? Then they will take 5 of the 8 teams that participate in that tournament?

That's the confusing part...how do they seed the 15 teams from D5 & D10 into the district playoff's?

The top 4 teams from the Blue division and the top 4 teams from the Green division will make the district playoffs. #1 Blue, #4 Blue, #2 Green, #3 Green will all play round robin format and #1 Green, #4 Green, # 2 Blue , #3 Blue will also play round robin. Then the Top points from each bracket will play for #1 and # 2 seed to regions, then the 2nd team with points will play for #3 and #4 seeds to region. I am assuming that then the third highest point getters will play for the final spot to regions.

What doesn't look right, is there are stronger teams in the Blue division and someone like Centennial might not even make the district playoffs.

Going to be a battle down to the end with those 5 teams. That's where D10 might have shot themselves in the foot. They should have at least 3 teams coming out of the D10 Classic division. I grew up plating in D10 and there isn't anything quite like North Suburban hockey. Good organizations and good coaches.

Girls' Hockey is organized by 'Leagues', not Districts. League 10 is comprised of teams from D10 and D5. They're all equal and everyone has a shot at going to Regions. League 2 has the teams from D1, D2, and D3. League 8 has D8 plus D4 I believe, plus sometimes Wisconsin teams.
League 10 is a little different in that the choose to organize into 2 Divisions within their League. But the way they get their 4 representatives to Regions is up to them.

Well "D10" is sending two teams from U12B - the overall winner according to points and then the winner of the D10 tournament. If they are the same, then it will obviously be the runner-up in the tourney.

Centennial 12B

Post by MoveYourFeet »

That Centennial 12B is a good team because the 12A coach took some questionable talent to the A level. The way I hear it is the coach moved up from 10A last year to 12A this year and is learning on the fly. Took two move up (10A - One good, the other does struggle) players on his squad and gave a couple of 8th graders a green light to really stand out at the B level. Three solid 7th grade goalies so the trickle down effect gives that B squad a good skilled, athletic player in the nets and the A team kept the other two. That 12B team will make a push, weakness.... third line good skaters, no real finisher, second line may be the best in the state, the first line is hampered by a forward (#17) spectator in the O zone and trouble with the speed of the play and reaction. Defense is solid, all girls are good skaters and puck handlers, they keep their head up and react well.

Mahtomedi looks good. I have only seen Mahtomedi once this year, but have seen the Centennial team play in a couple of tournaments and that is what I have seen. Good luck to everyone in Districts.

I'm glad to see LPH discover Mounds View this week. This is a very good team, could easily hang with the D6 powers.
