I have to agree that this hockey game (if you really can call it one) was not what it was talked up to be. 2 great teams that were denied the chance to play a real competitive game because the refs took over all control. The fans were also denied the chance to watch what should have been a HOCKEY Game between 2 top teams. Let's hope that the rematch in Virginia will provide everyone with a great game of hockey to watch rather than a "ref show"!
And who really cares which fans were doing what. The only issue to discuss was the very poor display of sportsmanship from behind the scorekeepers area when the "hey, hey, goodbye song" was played loudly over the arena loud speakers with still over 2 minutes left to play and continued to be played as fans left the arena. If fans chant it that's one thing, but to have it played over the loud speakers...well that's just wrong. Can't imagine being a player and hearing that when the game isn't even over yet. Very poor sportsmanship!!

The reffing was bad I know, but I was saying about the seating was Virginia should only have two sections. Hibbing's students and bands have sat there for years and its not going to change because a couple of parents want it to.

They always played that song towards the end of the 3rd when Hibbing is gonna get the win. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with them playing it. Its just Hibbings way of saying good bye.

Only 2 sections for all the Virginia fans...give me a break. In an arena that size why would anyone limit them to only 2 sections? Maybe Virgina should do the same to the Hibbing fans. No problem with Hibbing having a students' section, but let's be real here.
And if it is tradition to play that song, maybe someone should look into changing tradition......any way you look at it.....tradition or not.....it's just bad sportsmanship.

Your missing the point. I could see from the press box that Virginia had far more fans at that game than two sections will hold...

There not going to change the song, and there not going to change the seating. That Miners Arena is small but if thats what they decided to do then thats what they decide to do. Nothings going to change. Hibbing's house.

No need to worry about this in Virginia. The band sits on the end of the arena and Virginia's student section is pretty much non-existant. My whole point of this was that there were comments made that "it never fails that Virginia fans try to sit in the Hibbing student section", yet there is no other seats available in the arena. I'm quite sure they would have rather sat somewhere else, preferably with their own fans - but there was no more room.

When Hibbing hosts the likes of Virginia and Grand Rapids, the current seating arrangements with Hibbing Fans being alotted 3/4 of the arena seating doesn't work and is a recipe for trouble. There was a time when the arena seating was split in half, except for the band, who sat in the end section of on the visitor side. This kind of disappeared as the population dwindled in the area and with the loss and decline of other IRC teams this situation doesn't come up that often anymore because there are only a couple games with this kind of crowd.

As far as the song goes, that is called home ice advantage. If I were an opposing player and heard that song with two minutes left in a 2 goal game, it would rile me up and I would want to embarrass the hell out of the DJ and tie the game up. If Virginia fans don't like it, they have the chance on Feb. 17 to pull the tape out if Virginia has a late lead and play it for Hibbing fans to hear. Doubt that will happen as I have never heard music played at the Miners for a High School game, but the sound system is there.

When I was watching part of the JV game Virginia fan's were already starting to sit in the student section. They should fill the end first. Thats what I'm trying to get at is they always take the student's spot first.

I'm not quite sure why I'm still pursuing this discussion, but...

A) The student section is not marked, Virginia fans probably had no idea that they were in it until the students started arriving. They have no way of knowing - this is the only game that most of them have been to at this arena this year.

B) If you went to any hockey game, would you go directly to the end of the arena? No, you always try to sit more towards center ice, especially when there are open seats and there is no signage or anything instructing otherwise.
