Sad
Having these players quit is hard on the team. These are families that have been together since mites. These parents coached. It is hard when a guy that was your favorite coach for years takes his kid and leaves. A real confidence builder.
At least one of these guys jumped ship once before. What if the grass is no greener?
Go team!

I am seeing a trend develop in Austin over the years. Players either have to go to Jr. Gold or bolt to play in an area they will be more recognized. Several players last season, that would have supposedly helped the team, were not eligble to play due to grades or off-ice issues. Both grades and off-ice issues show a lack of parenting (typically the ones that are doing most of the finger pointing). I am not seeing anyone from last years high school team starting for Mayo, who left? Their best senior, and best player, left this offseson to further his career in the sport. The program has a long way to go and I think everyone would like to see "greener" pastures eventually.

I believe it was saretorre. He is a freshman I believe and skates jv and maybe a period of varsity. He will be a pretty good player when he gets to his junior and senior year, but he won't be an impact player or anything until then. I really don't think There are better times for Austin anytime in the near future. I heard that Austin's bantams this year are playing Bantam B (Wow). As for the kids that are looking for what people have been saying greener pastures well all I can say is that the grass is pretty burnt in Austin and I don't blame them for looking for a better experience. And a1puck your favorite coach that had his kid leave the program well I would have to say he is loyal to his son first and if he is seeking something better well you do what you have to do. Some people seek the competitive level and from what I heard and read already it doesn't seem Austin is competing at all. Yes I have seen the shot totals. I hope Austin can rebound in the future some time.
We all want what is best for our kids. I guess I have a different idea of what is best. I want my son to learn not to quit. I want him to place his team mates and life long friends over self. I want him to understand that the coach is the coach whether he likes it or not. Turning tail the first time you don't get what you want won't get you far in life. You better hope you like your job every day.
Kirby went to play with better team because he stands a real chance of going further. I have no problem with that. These last guys that left are decent enough players, but none of them aspire to play college hockey, they just can't stand to lose. They don't like the coach, but come to think of it none have ever skated for anyone but dad.

Tough road
These boys that went to Mayo have a tough row to hoe if they are ever to play varsity hockey. They won't be eligible for a calendar year. They have to get good grades all the while traveling back & forth to Roch. They have to submit to the Mayo Coach, something they have demonstrated that they struggle with. Then they have to make the team... Coming from a power house team like Austin this should be easy...
The fellow that has been pulling these boy's strings has done them a grave disservice. He should be ashamed.
These poor lads have given up playing and graduating with their pals and from their home town school. With no guarantee of any better outcome.
Sad & STUPID

They can't do anything about it, the law in Minnesota allows for open enrollment, the MSHSL has a penalty for athletes who do this. If Mayo decided that these kids could not play because they were transfers that would be discriminatory, all Mayo can do is follow the state and MSHSL rules on this. It really puts Mayo in a tough spot, the kids have a right to try out but given the timing they can't play until late next January so why keep them and tie up roster spots?a1puck wrote: Is this OK with the Roch administration? Should an employee participate in something like this?

Interesting how this person can "supposedly" back the program for years, yet belittle prior coaches, spread rumors, and cause cancer in a program. And their kid wasn't even playing for the team last year. Now he has taken two other players with him. Disappointing because several parents backed this person's beliefs last year and the team hasn't improved.

Outside Looking In
I'm semi-familiar with the parties involved. In my opinion, I think all these players should have stayed in Austin. These fathers have unrealistic expectations of their sons. I'm not going to name names, but all of these former Austin players are only average at best. Its my understanding if you transfer schools that athlete must sit out one year.

Has anyone thought that these kids might have left Austin for a sport other than hockey ? The person that is being called a "cancer" had his kid enrolled at Mayo for baseball. This kid also was never a student at Austin. He left Hayfield and a baseball coach he loved to go to Mayo for baseball. The kid is a sure thing as a college baseball player. I hear that these other kids are also very good baseball players. Don't forget when it comes down to making the decision to transfer it is up to the parents and the kid. This decision is their alone. As far as these kids being recruited by another parent, This started over fifteen years ago with the summer all-star teams. These kids would play with other kids from other programs and hear how great it is over on their side of the fence.
These choices to move are left up to the parents and kids who are trying to decide whats best for the future of the children. I would have liked to see the kids stick it out in Austin. But now that they are at Mayo I wish the kids deciding to stay in the Program, good luck. There are still a lot of quality kids left on the team, especially in character. I miss the days when the coach was respected just because he was the coach. Anyway, Good Luck to the Pack the rest of this season !!!!

Big Deal
What's the big deal....Big NINE hockey suck's conference wide! It would be something if these guy's were going somewhere where there was talent and the team was a top 20 team.
I haven't checked in a couple of weeks but I don't think theres a B9 team in Minn Hock's top 40!

Re: Big Deal
For those involved I am sure it is a big deal. It was obviously a big enough deal for you to add you two cents, and feel better about yourself or your son.Marty McSorely wrote:What's the big deal....Big NINE hockey suck's conference wide!
