I think Chaska is right where they should be. When you win the toughest tourney in state so far...You should be ranked that high. I know they have had some stumbles, but that tourney win was impressive.

The top five is pretty much the top five right now.
The Chaska one is a tough call, having seen them play one wonders how they have lost the games they have, but knowing the coach down there he definitely ramps his team up for end of year success. They are a top fifteen team regardless, won't be top ten until I see them get out of the cellar in district 6.
For the life of me I cannot understand this Duluth Lakers thing, in the top twenty for the last month and was up around the top ten earlier. Please explain to me how a team that is 3-6-1 in there last ten games, with losses to Rogers, Shakopee, Brainerd, and Hermantown retains a top twenty status based on an earlier season victory over Eden Prairie. Does not make any sense to me at all.
But with that said 15-20 will always have some questionable losses to go along with some good wins. The fact that 4 D2 teams are in that range is interesting, they tend to beat each other up and the ties are starting to come on again this year.
Lakeville North, first place team from District 8. Very good goaltending, will win when they get some consistent scoring. 18 times this year they have been held to 2 goals or less, luckily their goalies average a little less than 2 goals against a game. Big game with IGH friday night.
Play the name game here:
Teams that you typically see in the top twenty that aren't.
Duluth East, Moorhead, Grand Rapids, Andover, Anoka, Lakeville South, Lakeville North, Eagan, Apple Valley, Minntonka, Jefferson. All these names are not ranked.
Flip it around with teams that are doing well that could be ranked?:
New Prague, Minnapolis Park, Forest Lake, Bemidji, Inver Grove Heights.
I guess my main point is that the teams outside of the top ten this year are very interchangeable, very level playing field.

Re: LET'S PLAY HOCKEY PEEWEE A RANKINGS 1-29-09
Got me on that one, but I think winning two games in your own tourney shouldn't jump you above other teams that have been consistently top one and two during the year.... Other odd one is Burnsville wins St. Cloud tourney unscathed and falls in the ranks? Lots of big games this week should shake up the top teams again.. That is why the rankings are so much fun.asst tournament director wrote:Huh? Didn't Roseau just beat Edina and Wayzata last week?dogeatdog1 wrote:

I agree that the Lakers have not been playing like a top 20 team for several weeks now. The coaches made some whole sale changes that have not worked out well, and unless those changes are undone, they will not get beyond the district tournament. Having said that, the talent is there for them to be a top 20 team, but not the way it is paired up right now.Ron Hextall wrote:The top five is pretty much the top five right now.

That is not a knock on the coaches, but just the observation of someone who has seen them play enough to know that the current setup lacks chemistry.
roseau didnt fair well in the bright lights that was their 3,4,5,6 and 7th games of the season!!!! if you were to ask edina people or wayzata people who seen the games last weekend they would tell you roseau could be at 1,2,3 or 4. thats the same for edina.wayzata and elk river its a coin toss on who will win the game when they meet up. i havent seen blaine play or burnsville.
Watchdog, I completely agree with you. Roseau beat Edina in the scrimmage in the last minute or so - pretty even game up until the end. Edina beat Wayzata in the last 30 seconds due to a penalty. Wayzata beat Elk River by one, but the game was pretty evenly matched. Wayzata lost to Roseau by several, but they had played a tough schedule and looked a little tired (plus I heard a couple of the players were sick). Chaska can be great somedays and not so much on others, but they are very physical and "Up North" lets a lot of that go without calling penalties. Maybe Roseau would have beaten Chaska if the game were played in the cities. But then again, home ice and lack of travel fatigue does help.
End result, all of these teams are wonderful to watch, they all have good days and bad, some have more consistent goaltending than others, and any one of them could win a game against another at any time.
Let's just hope they all make it through regions so we can see them duke it out at State.

What changes were made from earlier in the year? It seems to anyone who was playing them that they were playing well early in the season(When they weren't taking too many penalties). The problem with the Lakers right now is they stopped moving the puck. A couple players are carrying the puck with their heads down through traffic and they are not playing as a team. The negative attitudes and lack of team play are more of a explaination than anything else.CreaseMonkey wrote:I agree that the Lakers have not been playing like a top 20 team for several weeks now. I was waiting for a comment like this. This never seems to be mentioned when a Northern team comes to the Metro...couldn't this have been a factor during EP tournament ? Asst Tourn Dir said it best, recently played games carry the most weight.pebbles wrote:Watchdog, I completely agree with you. Be it going north or south all of the factors should be figured in...games played recently should not automatically count more that before... what if a team gets a hot goalie for a tourney? They could get outshot 40-5 and win... does that make them a new top 10? All I am saying in my original post is that there is more than a tourney win to consider when looking at who should jump whom in the rankings... for the most part the top ten could play with any team on any day but consistency should play the bigger part and the rankings will gain more credibility. Three one goal losses to top five teams shouldn't move you down should it?

At this time of year injuries start to play a factor in team performance as well. My understanding is that OMG has had two kids on the shelf for the past few weeks and one kid playing with a broken wrist. In looking at the scores from St. Cloud they lost to two teams they had beaten earlier in the year. This has to be a factor. I would say based on the play on the ice the slide to 10th is accurate. I would also assume they will climb in the rankings once they are at full strength. Rankings should measure the current play on the ice not a teams potential.dogeatdog1 wrote:quote]

I have seen Blaine and Burnsville and would put both those teams in the same boat. Looks like Blaine has run off 11 in a row with a lot of 4-5 goal victories... Burnsville has run off 8 in a row with similar scores... Both have played good teams and won tournaments. Elk River has 2 losses and a tie in their last 8 games, Wayzata has lost 3 of their last 8 games? Edina has lost 3 in the last 11 games...Should you be asking these people? should these three teams be in the top 5? Roseau is a different story as they play a different competition. ( I know it isn't their fault) but if you can't be consistent and win your own tourney no matter who is there I think #2 is too high.... If the recent games is truley the benchmark as asst tournament director states the real #1 team should be Blaine... YOUR THOUGHTS?watchdog wrote:roseau didnt fair well in the bright lights that was their 3,4,5,6 and 7th games of the season!!!! if you were to ask edina people or wayzata people who seen the games last weekend they would tell you roseau could be at 1,2,3 or 4. thats the same for edina.wayzata and elk river its a coin toss on who will win the game when they meet up. i havent seen blaine play or burnsville.

I won't disagree with your assessment. Earlier in the year, the Lakers went with 5 guys on defense, 2 of which have now been moved to forward. Now they are only playing 4 guys on defense, which leaves 10 forwards, causing them to constantly jumble the lines up and kids have no chemistry.HawkeyPower wrote:What changes were made from earlier in the year? Since the change, there has been too much individual play, and little teamwork. Hopefully they can pull it together, but there is not much season left to do it.
