Only 4 seeded, who gets the boot?
Upsets are possible, I will be the first to admit, but if I were a betting man, I would put my money on Breck, Little Falls, St Cloud Cathedral, St Thomas Academy and Warroad all winning out and making it to state. In the event this happens one of them will not be seeded...who will it be?
This would be a tough one to decide. St Thomas beat Breck. Little Falls beat Cathedral in OT who beat Warroad. Looks to me like Warroad or Breck, but I would hate to have to pick. The only game of the remaining games for these 5 teams I see one of them not winning is possibly the SCC/DM to conclude the season. If that happens, SCC maybe be the odd man out.

This is a pretty bold assumption.HShockeywatcher wrote:Upsets are possible, I will be the first to admit, but if I were a betting man, I would put my money on Breck, Little Falls, St Cloud Cathedral, St Thomas Academy and Warroad all winning out and making it to state. Section 2
Breck, Rogers, Mound, Delano....
Breck might not make it.
Section 4
Mahtomedi, St Thomas, So St Paul, Totino
St Thomas has some tough games.
Section 5
Denfeld, St Cloud Cathedral, Hermantown.
Hermantown would be the favorite to win.
Section 6
Little Falls should win but Alexandria has a very good team.
Section 8
Warroad are definitely the favorites, but Thief Rivers goalie could change things and Bemidji has a shot.
Re: Only 4 seeded, who gets the boot?
Your WAY ahead of yourself. Let's let the season play out first. Then we can watch sections. At this point, we will worry about seedings!HShockeywatcher wrote:Upsets are possible, I will be the first to admit, but if I were a betting man, I would put my money on Breck, Little Falls, St Cloud Cathedral, St Thomas Academy and Warroad all winning out and making it to state. After doing some research the hardest game I see for Breck is their last game against Blake, which Breck already beat by a score 6-0.
SCC-Their toughest games appear to be thier last game which is against Duluth Marshall, or a game against Mound-Westonka
Warroad- Plays Roseau for the second time tomorrow in Roseau. That game will be very tough. They also play Bemidj which could be a possible upset if Warroad isn't careful.
Little Falls-Lets be realistic, they don't play anyone. They hardest game will be against St. Cloud Tech from what I can see.
St. Thomas- Does it matter who they play? Someone will still find some excuse to give them a break. I see that thay have another game against Hill-Murray.
If I have anything of these games wrong please correct me. Or if someone thinks that there are harder games for these teams.
*note-all these games are regular season

IMO, 5A is the most top heavy section this year. St Thomas Mahtomedi and SSP is a good one too, but i think STA will buckle down and take it without too much trouble. Hermantown and SCC are both top 5 teams, ok top 6 i guess. And on top of that there is still Denfeld who they will have to get by. When it comes down to it, there are two teams in this section who can win the state tournament, and whoever comes out of 5A will be seeded. (assuming its H-town or SCC)
Because Hermantown is better.HShockeywatcher wrote:elliot, how would Hermantown be the favorite with a head to head loss to Cathedral?
I'm not saying upsets won't happen, I'm just wondering people's opinions. St Thomas probably has the toughest road to state of anyone there.
I would argue Breck and Warroad are locks to make it.

I think he mixed Breck up with STA.HShockeywatcher wrote:southernmnscout, what's that supposed to mean? Upsets happen, that's why we play the game, I'll be the first to admit that. But I'd say those two teams have a pretty easy road to the X, Breck a bit easier.
Or assumed you were a private school supporter.
I would not put Breck in the lock category.
At single A I would go
Warroad
Little Falls
Hutch or New Ulm
As those with the surest shot.
Then Hermantown/St Cloud Cathedral.
I would put Breck in with STA and Hibbing and Rochester Lourdes with the most difficult.
Of course, Warroad and Little Falls may not make it.
If Hutch or New Ulm don't make it out of 3, the quarter-final game will probably be pretty ugly.

Why would you say Breck's road is difficult? I would say they are a shoe in: Orono W 5-1, Blake W 6-0. Mound and STMA are the other two top teams. I seriously doubt, though, any will put up a fight with Breck. Just my opinion.
I would say that 4A and 7A have the toughest roads; any teams seeded 1-4 could make it to the X.
The 2nd seed of Hermantown/SCC will have a tougher time.
Warroad beat TRF 3-1 and 5-1. I don't think anyone will put up a fight.
If any one of these teams doesn't make it, seeding will be much easier I'd say. Although if Alex makes it, they will be a tough first round match up for whoever they land.

p = played tough at times during the year.
c = could beat Breck
Blake School n
Breck School
Holy Family Catholic High School n
Orono High School p
Richfield High School p
Rogers High School c
Saint Louis Park High School p
Saint Michael-Albertville H.S. p
Waconia High School n
Delano p
Meadow Creek Christian n
Mound-Westonka p
Providence Academy n
So if you have several teams that could come up with a hot goaltender and decent play from the rest, it makes it possible for a difficult QF and semi game.
Rogers could beat Breck, when they play as a team they are good.
And I don't see Breck as one of the top five teams in the state based on watching them.
Breck - Rogers is more doubtful than TRF - Warroad.
So less likely a lock (IMO).
Depending on how the last 6 or 8 games go, I may play Rogers rather than Breck.
Breck has a soft remaining schedule, will they be ready????

Breck does have a very soft schedule. Breck is a team like Holy Angels that could greatly benefit from being able to play their conferences opponents each once a season. That being said, they do exactly (In my opinion of course) what Little Falls doesn't with their schedule; they don't allow their easy opponents to score on them. In their wins, they have allowed 3 goals once (Lourdes), 2 goals twice (CDH and Duluth East), 1 goal 7 times and have 6 shut outs. While they don't have the easiest road ahead of them, I expect them to allow maybe 2 GA in their remaining 5 games.
It's not an exact science, but it really says something about them, imo.
They tied TG (not sure what that says) and their losses were to Wayzata (in OT), St Thomas and Mahtomedi (who beat Hill).
Assuming they make it to the X, I would think it would be difficult to not give them a top seed with how they are playing their opponents. They don't have the most difficult schedule, but I'd say they've done a good job with what they have. With so many people giving LF so much credit for simply winning all their games, I would think the same logic would give Breck good credit for not being scored on by their easy opponents and playing well against good competition.
St Thomas is the only team of the 5 mentioned I've seen play this year, but simply based on numbers (SOS and how teams do against the good and bad opponents are huge in my book) I would put Breck in the top 3 if 4 of their last 5 are shut outs and they hold form through sections.

I bring this back up to see what people think now. In many threads posters keep saying that it will be STA, SCC, Warroad and LF. I'm not saying I know who should be out, but I'm a little confused what people know about Breck being so bad I don't?
Breck hasn't lost in 20 games, their last loss was their 7th game of the season by 1 goal against Wayzata, and their other two losses were against two teams who are top ten teams and both in the section 4A final right now.
Breck beat Lourdes, a team Cathedral lost to.
My seedings:
1. STA (toughest schedule, only losses to AA teams and their 1st game)
2. LF (soft schedule)
3. Breck (good wins)
4. SCC (lost to Lourdes and LF, beat Warroad)
5. Warroad (good team, but lost to SCC who is the only other A team they've played to make it to state, soft schedule)
6. Lourdes (win over SCC and the #1 seed in their section)
Just my two cents

I would say that your seeding are dead on. I would not want to be the team that draws Warroad after not being seeded . . . let's just say that they might feel a bit motivated by that. lol In fact none of the first round games are gimmies except whoever plays the winner of section 3a.
It is going to be a great class a tourney.

Assuming STA wins tonight, although I could see them losing, these are my rankings...
1a. STA (best A team I've seen this year)
1b. Little Falls (weak schedule...beat everyone on it, including SCC)
3. SCC (win over Warroad and several other top teams, including H-town twice...lost to Lourdes and LF (in OT) VERY early in the season, haven't lost since)
4a. Warroad (lost to SCC and Moorhead, good wins, only two losses this year)
4b. Breck (Beat Duluth East early, beat struggling (at the time) Lourdes, many games down the stretch against the likes of Minnehaha and St. Paul schools...very soft schedule)
6. Lourdes (beat SCC, very solid team, some bad losses)
7. Virginia (good team, some iffy losses)
8. 3A...nuff said
First, I would like to say that I have seen STA, LF, SCC, Warroad, Breck, and Virginia play this year. These rankings are not based on who I feel is the best, but how I feel they SHOULD pan out.
Should LF get a #1 seed? Sure, they play a poor schedule, NOT A QUESTION! BUT, they beat everyone on it.
Should Warroad be seeded ahead of SCC? I don't think so (obvious bias). Sure Warroad only has two losses, but so does SCC. Since that game, Warroad has lost once while SCC has been perfect. Although a relatively soft argument, SCC has played better against common opponents (scorewise). The way I see it, the only game that could negatively affect SCC is the loss to Lourdes...but if they use that 'one-game makes a season' rationale, SCC would still be ahead of Warroad.
Where does Breck fit in? I have no idea.
It will be an exciting and balanced tourney without a doubt. It will be interesting to see how the seeds pan out, but 1-7 are all more than capable of putting together three wins. I could see the team out of 3A beating someone in this tourney, but not two or three.
