Section 7A seeding

Post by Ranger25 »

A best guess as of today

1. Hibbing
2. Virginia
3. Dul. Marshall
4. Int. Falls
5. Dul. Central
6. Silver Bay
7. Two Harbors
8. Eveleth-Gilbert
9. Greenway
10. Ely

I'm wondering about 3-4, and 7-8-9-10. Ely beat Greenway and Two Harbors but was crushed by the Falls and loses to Eveleth. Greenway beats Falls, loses to Ely.

Any guesses?

Looks right to me, unless there are some upsets in the next two weeks.

If you go strickly by win/loss/tie records which I think they should rather than all of the political seeding junk here is how everyone ranks.

#1 Virginia 17-5-0
#2 Hibbing 12-5-1
#3 I. Falls 12-6-1
#4 Marshall 11-7-1
#5 Eveleth 7-11-0
#6 Silver Bay 7-10-2
#7 Central 7-11-2
#8 Ely 6-14-0
#9 Two Harbors 5-13-3
#10 Greenway 3-16-0

I don't think that the bottom team by win/loss record should get seeded higher than another team just because towards the end of the season they started to win. KEEP IT FAIR AND GO STRICTLY OFF RECORDS NOT POLITICS!!

With so many section games left to play, its almost impossible to peg this at this point in time. Especially with the parity at the top four and the bottom six.

Hibbing - Front runner for #1 right now. Losses to I Falls on Thursday and Virginia on the 17th could drop them - especially if Virginia defeats Duluth Marshall. Virginia holds some common opponent advantages and would have a better overall record in that scenario. Games remain @I Falls, vs. Eveleth, @Virginia, and @Greenway.

Virginia - In line for the #2 seed, but will need to beat Duluth Marshall on the 10th to stay there. A win over Hibbing on the 17th and a Falls win over Hibbing could move them up to #1. A loss to Marshall and they could drop as low as #4. Games remain vs. Greenway, @Duluth Marshall, and vs. Hibbing.

Duluth Marshall - Really doesn't play enough section opponents, especially International Falls. They beat Greenway and Duluth Central, but lost to Hibbing by 4. Only section game left is with Virginia. A win and they probably get #2, a loss and they probably get #4 - depending on what happens in the other games with the top 4 teams. Game remains vs. Virginia.

International Falls - Will have to win their way up out of the #4 spot. They need a win over Hibbing and Greenway, and will need Virginia to beat Hibbing and Duluth Marshall to move up. A loss to Greenway again could give them a road game in the quarters. Games remain vs. Hibbing, vs. Silver Bay, and @Greenway.

Duluth Central - Convincing wins over Silver Bay, Two Harbors, and Ely distinguish them above the rest, along with closer losses to the top teams. One game remains @ Eveleth.

Greenway - Yes, they have only three wins, but all three are against section opponents and they have beaten one of the top four and lost a one-goal game to another. They also beat Central. Losses to Ely and Silver Bay and their overall record keep them from the top 5. They still have four 7A opponents left to play, so #5 isn't completely out of reach, although neither is #9. Games remain @ Virginia, vs. I Falls, @Eveleth, and vs. Hibbing.

Eveleth-Gilbert, Ely, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors - The bottom four have similar overall records, similar section records, and have taken turns beating each other. There are still a handful of games amongst these teams that will likely determine who ends up on the road for the play-in games and who hosts. Greenway could join this group and one could move out of the play-in game scenario if things break right.

Section Games Remaining:

Thursday Feb. 5th
Hibbing @ I Falls

Friday Feb. 6th
Duluth Central @ Eveleth-Gilbert
Greenway @ Virginia
Silver Bay @ I Falls

Monday Feb. 9th
Eveleth-Gilbert @ Silver Bay

Tuesday Feb. 10th
Virginia @ Duluth Marshall
I Falls @ Greenway
Ely @ Two Harbors

Friday Feb. 13th
Eveleth-Gilbert @ Hibbing
Ely @ Silver Bay

Tuesday Feb. 17th
Hibbing @ Virginia
Greenway @ Eveleth-Gilbert

?????
Hibbing @ Greenway makeup game

There are also some common opponent games left that involve the likes of Grand Rapids and Duluth Denfeld that could come into play in some scenarios.

I don't see how Hibbing is a sluggish team. They should be 1, not Marshall who got skated all over by Hibbing.

Go ahead and make Hibbing the #1 seed then both 7A and 7AA #1 seeds will have lost to their respective counterparts in 1A and 1AA, two teams mind you that won't be seeded in the top 3 in 1A or 1AA :P

Not to change the subject dramatically, but Century is 5th in 1AA by win/loss right now and plays many of the teams again. They could easily be the #1 team by section time.

But yeah, it would be sad. I think Marshall's schedule prepares them best, but the head to head loss to Hibbing does hurt them. Where are 7A rounds played?

Hibbing pretty much has a one game cushion an case theirs a loss tonight against Falls they shouldn't drop from the 1 seed. They'd still hold the tiebreaker over Marshall and Virginia but then the Virginia game could be a must win pending the Virginia @ Marshall game.

1. Hibbing
2. Marshall
3. Falls
4. Virginia
Thats all we need to know. No one else is a factor.

In some sports all of sections are played at the high seed. In hockey that isn't the case and the difference in seedings isn't as dramatic. In a section with 3 top teams, the difference between 1 and 2 is dramatic, but the difference between 2 and 3 is nothing more than bragging right. Similarly, the difference between 1 and 2 in a section with 4 teams is simply the jersey color.

There are also times when the 2 seed matches up better with the 3 seed, or the 1 seed matches up bad with the 4 seed. Seeding isn't always an exact science.

The higher seed in a game is the home team and gets the last change.

The key team for how the 5-10 seeds are determined is Eveleth-Gilbert. They have games left with Duluth Central, Greenway, and two with Silver Bay.

If you just base it on how good they are, give 5 to Central and 6 to Greenway.

Now that we know the results of a few more games, it becomes apparent this section's top seed is Virginia's to lose.

Within the top four, here's how it shakes down. It all boils down to two Virginia games...

Scenario 1:
Virginia wins out with wins over Marshall and Hibbing. In this case, Virginia gets the #1 seed by virtue of a better overall record, and better record with common opponents over Hibbing, who would have and identical section record. Hibbing would get #2, I Falls would get #3, and Marshall would get #4 because they didn't win either of the games with the top two teams and has a 1-2 section record. (I Falls has wins over each of the top 2, which is enough to negate the Greenway loss.)

Scenario 2:
Virginia defeats Marshall, but loses to Hibbing. Hibbing gets #1. Virginia gets #2, I Falls #3, and Marshall #4. Section records make this pretty cut and dried.

Scenario 3:
Marshall wins over Virginia, Virginia knocks off Hibbing. MESS!!! Hibbing would probably get #1 in this case, but it would be open for debate at the seeding meeting. Marshall would likely get #2 if Hibbing got #1. Virginia gets #3 and I Falls gets #4. Realistically, it would be a debate for the ages at the seeding meeting and anything could happen. This is the only way Marshall or I Falls could get enough votes for the top spot - although its still an uphill battle.

Scenario 4:
Marshall and Hibbing both defeat Virginia. Hibbing is #1. Duluth Marshall is #2, Virginia is #3, and I Falls is #4 - Here's where that Greenway loss haunts I Falls. I don't see it going any other way in this scenario.

Other Scenarios:
Ties. A Virginia/Marshall tie gives Hibbing and advantage and gives Marshall a solid argument for the #2 seed. Falls would probably not benefit from a tie here. A Virginia/Hibbing tie would give Hibbing the top seed. The #2 seed would probably be the winner of the Marshall/Virginia game. Once again, the Greenway loss keeps I Falls at the #4 spot.

Bottom line (assuming Greenway or Eveleth doesn't upset Hibbing or I Falls):
Hibbing will be #1 or #2
Virginia will be #1, #2, or #3
Marshall will be #2, #3, or #4
I Falls will be #3 or #4

By Seed:
#1 - Virginia or Hibbing
#2 - Hibbing, Virginia, or Duluth Marshall
#3 - Virginia, Duluth Marshall, or I Falls
#4 - I Falls or Duluth Marshall

With Central's win over Eveleth last night, they should be a lock at #5.

The rest still have to battle...

Hibbing or Virginia
3. IFalls
4. D Marshall
5 Central
6 Greenway

The IR guys will not vote Marshall up.
Greenway is better than their record.
Hibbing and Virginia the night before the seeding meeting, winner goes to the meeting with braggin rights. Loser goes in trying to hold #2.

Of course the remaining games play into it, also.

Puck Ranger makes it clear (as possible), but then again, the coaches vote with no particular strings attached - other than answerring to the other coaches.

I think I'm going with Scenario 4. Hibbing responded pretty well to there 10 day lay off even though they lost they still played well.

If this is true and Marshall beats Virginia, the Duluth teams should not be in this section. End of year wins and sos should be considered too.

Well, I am sure they do, but when things get muddled....
Its either Coach A from someplace is my buddy,
OR
if I can get us the number 2 spot, who do I want to see in the number 3 spot.

It may only be in their subconscious, but it is there.

The only way to not have that is to let me do all the seeding across the state, because I am so fair and honest.

 :D
