I think a lot of people who are discrediting Benik would have the same opinion as Dean Spiros if they actually went and watched him play.
My guess is that every one of the people who have been ripping the kid to death on this board have never even seen him play.
Congrats to Joey and I'm sure he'll be a great addition to the Huskies.

I was expecting him to actually control the play, carry the puck, go in the corners, take the body on someone, and go below the top of the circles in his own zone. I was suprised on how average his skating was. I figured going into it that he would dominate aginst Irondale and that was not the case. Irondale could have won by 7 or 8 goals. Not trying to hack on the kid, but don't know how SCSU can offer this kid something before he plays in the USHL. Don't get me wrong, that is a ton of points, but just don't see it. Anyone know how much of an offer he got? Was it 80% or 30%? That would make a big difference. Congrats to him, hopefully he just didn't play well. If I didn't have a program, I wouldn't have known he he was. Life in the WCHA will be a little different.
that sounds like someone who has seen him play....
this isnt some throw away game up in Rochester....

Going directly to SC?
Are these kids going directly to SC this fall? I am sure Motzko will have them play spring hockey in the USHL first to see how they play. Then decide weather to act on the intent. My guess they will play juniors for a year or two as to better develop both skill and confidence when playing with bigger, faster, stronger 21 YO men.
Just because they have a offer from a school does not mean that the school will follow through and full fill the tender. Good luck to those boys and coaches and may their futures be filled with more victories than defeats.

Re: Going directly to SC?
Benik is only a junior in high school. Coaches rarely back out on a commitment, and will usually only do so if the kid is being obstinate. They will, however, be brutally honest with an incoming recruit about his opportunities to see any significant amount of playing time. Sometimes that conversation will prompt a recruit to look elsewhere.MoveYourFeet wrote:Are these kids going directly to SC this fall? Seen him play quite a bit,put him on an upper level team, play upper level competition and see how he does. Not saying the kid can`t score goals,it would be interesting to see how he would pan out in a little different setting. Congrats to him though...90% scholarship...do what ya gotta do...only time will tell...

True, none of these guys have much of a reputation for backchecking. Festler's actually been pretty solid defensively. Or at least, more than I thought he would be. I'm pretty confident Hano will learn to play defense eventually. As for Benik, I have no idea if he will be ever be good at ANYTHING at the college level, but I certainly hope he is!Gopher Blog wrote:There will be a lot of goals scored against that line if they tried it.MrBoDangles wrote:Benik video against Benilde-- MYFOXHOCKEY.COM ---- Possible -Hanowski - Festler - Benik- line in the future at SCSU?
My guess is, you'll never see this line combo... ever.

The way the rodents are playing D and tending the nets right now there will be lots of goals scored on them no matter who is playing.Gopher Blog wrote:There will be a lot of goals scored against that line if they tried it.MrBoDangles wrote:Benik video against Benilde-- MYFOXHOCKEY.COM ---- Possible -Hanowski - Festler - Benik- line in the future at SCSU?

Didn't that terrible D core and goaltending sweep the Huskies a couple weeks ago?SCSUHOCKEYFAN15 wrote:The way the rodents are playing D and tending the nets right now there will be lots of goals scored on them no matter who is playing.Gopher Blog wrote:There will be a lot of goals scored against that line if they tried it.MrBoDangles wrote:Benik video against Benilde-- MYFOXHOCKEY.COM ---- Possible -Hanowski - Festler - Benik- line in the future at SCSU?

Yep, I don't think we are very good this year. It is fun watching the highly talented rodents fall apart though.Lucia4President wrote:Didn't that terrible D core and goaltending sweep the Huskies a couple weeks ago?SCSUHOCKEYFAN15 wrote:The way the rodents are playing D and tending the nets right now there will be lots of goals scored on them no matter who is playing.Gopher Blog wrote: There will be a lot of goals scored against that line if they tried it.

The Gophers are falling apart, and I don't blame you for enjoying it. If the Huskies or Sioux were playing the same way the Gophers are, I'd be loving it.SCSUHOCKEYFAN15 wrote:Yep, I don't think we are very good this year. But back to Joey Benik. He is obviously an above average talent, even if his numbers are inflated because of a weak schedule. The SCSU coaching staff wouldn't have locked him in if he wasn't D-1 quality, obviously. He might be small, but he has a few years to grow, as I would guess SCSU will have him play a couple years of juniors.
Congrats Joey, good luck.

Couldn't agree more. Motzko and his staff didn't base their evaluation on a short video clip, and they probably know how to judge talent and potential a little better than all the "experts" who've been knocking him here.SCSUHOCKEYFAN15 wrote:Motzko is not an idiot, he would not offer the kid a 90% scholi if he was not a good player.
Motzko must see something in him . . .I trust BOB

The way the rodents are playing they won't either!Gopher Blog wrote:Make that 4-0 on the year. But let him talk... When State has more NCAA tourney wins than the Gophers have national championships, I'll start to listen to what you have to say.SCSUHOCKEYFAN15 wrote:The way the rodents are playing they won't either!Gopher Blog wrote:Make that 4-0 on the year. Watched the same thing tonight and I agree about the goalies.starmvp wrote:I was just watching the gopher game and they had a short video on Benik and how he could break the goal record for a season tonight. It showed some season highlights of his and yes, they were nice, but wow most of the goalies he plays against are terrible
They looked a BIT below average.

Well he did it... breaking "old" Festler's goal scoring record...
Wow, looks like he did it against the old powerhouse, Cooper... let's see, Cooper...
From Minnhock:
COOPER 6AA
Ranking (A & AA) 129th (of 156)
5 Wins 15 Losses 1 Ties 61 GF 106 GA
St. Francis 3
Cooper 0
Thought it would be more...
Not surprised the record has been broken... Benik has some skills and talent, but who do they play - schedule, goaltenders, defenseman...
Congrats... I guess...

Its a bad arguement that this amount of goals is because of his schedule, poor goaltenders, poor defenseman. Why dont other players on his team have these numbers or other players in his conference? They all play each other. He has these numbers because he has superior talent. You dont put up 60+ goals because your lucky. Sure you can argue that some teams may be weak, but how come other players are not putting up these numbers? Congratulations. SCSU is going to love having you.
