Moorhead @ Alexandria 2-19-09
I know this is a few days in advance, but what does everyone think. I think this is a good prep for the playoffs for both teams, but I am taking the cardinals 4-3 in a thriller....

ok ok even moorhead comes away with a win in this game, but there is no way they will score 5 goals, or even 4 at that. Alexandria hasn't given up 4 goals since december when they played little falls, and they have only given up 4 goals twice, the other game was the first game of the year against cathedral. At most moorhead scores 3 goals, either way i still think alex will take this game, alex goaltending is too solid....
So the Cards only allowed 4 twice & Spuds can't score that many (?). Taters scored 5 to beat Warroad, 4 to tie Centennial & took Jefferson to O/T. This one is gonna depend on which sack of potatoes makes the trip to Runestone country (& which goalie plays). In last 20 years Spuds are 34-2-1 against the Cards. Last time Cards beat the Spuds was December 1999.snakedude11 wrote:ok ok even moorhead comes away with a win in this game, but there is no way they will score 5 goals, or even 4 at that. In any case, its really nice to see the Cards with a winning record for a change & hope they can make a game of it.

Spudnut i think you misunderstood me. Im not saying moorhead cant score that many goals. Yes they scored 4 goals against centenniel, but centenniel has also given up 4 goals 4 times this season, alex hasnt given up that many goals. And they also scored 5 goals against warroad, who was also given up 4 goals or more 4 times this season, alex has twice.
We could throw numbers back & forth all day. My point is: its a lot easier to get good numbers playing the likes of Sartell, Willmar, River Lakes, etc. than it is against Edina, Hill-Murray, Jefferson, etc. You can win a hockey game with 1 goal, ya don't need 4. Maybe we should save our breath & see what happens Thur nite - its hockey, crazy things happen.snakedude11 wrote:Spudnut i think you misunderstood me. The game....
It seems lately (since they broke that 8-game losing streak) the Spuds have been playing up or down to the level of their opponents - tying Centennial and taking Jefferson to OT, while tying Tech.
That being said, this game worries me, speaking from a Spud fan viewpoint, for a couple of reasons. First, it's on the road. Second, if the Spuds think they can just walk into Alex and cruise to an easy win based on their overall record against Alex (as Spudnut mentioned), they'll lose. All the Spuds have to do is think back to the 2nd Bemidji game this year when they lost to another team that they hadn't lost to in many, many years to find some motivation.

Moorhead probably has better talent on their 3rd line but Alex 2nd line has been clicking lately and can put the puck in the net. The key to Alex winning this game will be unselfish play and not having certain individuals try to skate end to end with the puck. If they distribute the puck well (PASS) and their D man's up in their O zone, I think they will take this one.
Hemingway can keep them in any game so if the Cards get some tape to tape puck movement, they will prevail in a close one.

I have not yet seen Moorhead play, but know they are always a handful for the Cards. Scarface you are right on. Those few players that like to skate around with the puck cant do that against a good team like Moorhead, they have to have faith in their linemen and play as a team. Defense has to be tough and hold the blue line and they will need great goaltending from Hemingway because they will get out shot.
