Game vs. Lourdes
scarlethockey33 wrote:Interesting decision Coach Essay, starts sophomore goalie Kaufman over senior Trautman for the game vs. the Lourdes tonight
Obviously not a good one. This is the second attempt at starting the sophmore instead of Trautman in a big game with bad results. Both games Kaufman has been pulled prior to the 3rd. It's late in the season to be trying new things. Stay with the senior goalie Trautman.

West seems too look different in the big games, besides starting kaufman for odd reasons... I saw them play against East and Austin where they looked like they wanted to win and were playin hard. Then I've seen the Lourdes game and the team looked lost, not because they weren't able to keep up, but more so they looked like they were too worried about defense and where they had to be. I think it may be something to do with the coaching over on the westside that causes the inconsistancy???? Maybe a change in the gameplan to play their game and not something based off of the circumstances??
Just my opinion.

There could be several factors. First, the loss of T. Bruggeman in goal is starting to show. I believe West (Trautman?) gave up 4 goals vs Winona on less than 20 shots, with the OT winner being pretty weak. Poor Kauffmann has been given some primetime starts (Lourdes and Mayo). His inexperience and nerves got the best of him, resulting in early goals against in the first period of both games, and the resulting inability for either him or his team to recover. Second, what has happened to West's top line? They were, arguably, one of the top three lines in the section....seems they have fallen off the edge of a cliff. Are there ego issues on that line? West goes as their top line goes, it seems. Third, and related to the second point, are there locker room problems? Any one who has been involved in sports knows that the best way for a team to underperform is to put a 'bad apple' in the locker room. Just a thought. I would be interested in what some of the Scarlet players on this forum, current and past, have to say about that. Finally, it seems that their loss to Minnehaha Academy was the start of the Scarlet's freefall. Was this a huge blow to their team confidence and they have not been able to recover? Or were the Scarlets overachieving early on, and what we are now seeing is a true reflection of their ability? Regardless, good luck the rest of the way boys. This is the time for team leaders to step up and show the way. Many of you have tasted the fine wine called "The State Tournament". No one team in this section has a lock on it. The team who works the hardest and the smartest will carry the torch for Section 1a.Rocket78 wrote:What's the cause of MW's inconsistency? Big losses to Mayo and now Lourdes. They also recently lost to Winona. It must be their soft schedule? Their big wins have been over MankatoE (2), LeSuer, Waseca, Austin (2) and Northfield.

I do agree with you hockeypurist, after the lost to Minnehaha they haven't looked nearly as good, but anything to really bring this team down had to be the lost to Mayo. West had their chances but didn't finish, this caused huge frustration among the West players and I wouldn't be surprised if there was yelling and pointed fingers after the game in the locker room. The team still has Century and John Marshall on their schedule. Their seniors like Trautman, Zimmerman and of course the other Bruggemen twin Andrew need to lead the team and bring them together for a good section run.
As for the goalies, Trautman's a senior he'll have to get it done after sections. Kaufman is a sophomore he has more years, he's a solid goalie. I imagine he'll be a name talked about in section 1A next year.
West has everything they need BUT consistency and maybe a little goaltending to win this section.

One the team does go based on how the first line goes, thats true but thats really totally unfair to say every team goes based on there first line.
Struggles of late have look to come from other spots like there powerplay I don't think Iv seen west score a powerplay goal in the last four games.
Two I would like to say if there is any problems going on in the locker room west should figure it out because I believe they are a team to look out for in sections. Lets look at some scores they only lost to New Prague 4 to 2 one empty net goal and Albert Lea 5 to 3 with a empty net goal. So it does look like west could be a big factor come sections based on those scores.
Three I would say its hard to blame (trautman) for one easy goal what iv heard he has played well in some important games (New Prague, Albert Lea,Fairbault and Owatonna). Kauffman is young and his emotions get the best of him. I say as he gets older he will handle it better next year.
Fourth west needs to focus on defense first, to be sucessful they just need to play defense and hope for some low scoring games to win this section.

I dont see them doing to much damage in sections. I see them getting a matchup with Albert Lea in the section quarters. And than could maybe get a upset there. but nothing further.
But Red Wing is stayin hot beating northfield 4-0 the other night and they just beat Hermantown 4-1 today! I would say they are the favorite for the section right now and will get the 1 seed.

West
If Red Wing is "hot" after beating Northfield 4-0, what does that say about West, who beat Northfield 10-2 less than a month ago? The Scarlets have had an up and down season, mostly up at first, and mostly down lately. Albert Lea has played great in the last two weeks; Lourdes has been a little off at times.
IMHO, the winner of the New Prague v. Red Wing game this Tuesday night should get the #1 seed.

Re: West
+1 for the New Prague vs Red Wing game deciding the #1 seed; as far as the Northfield game, yeah it was 4-0 but the shots were 38-10, the goalie was just making some saves, thats hockey, it happens. Could have easily been 10-0. The shots in the NF vs West game were 25-22 West; closer game other than the score.OU812 wrote:If Red Wing is "hot" after beating Northfield 4-0, what does that say about West, who beat Northfield 10-2 less than a month ago? It will be interesting come Tuesday night; RW handled NP pretty good last meeting at NP, but I have a feelin we will see a different team than the one that was down 5-0 going into the 3rd last meeting. Should be fun.

If NP wins tuesday and that is if. That would mean they split the games. Go to the common oppenents. NP split games againts Hutch. Lost to Hermantown 7 to 1. Red Wing still as game against Hutch. at home. Just beat Hermantown. I don't see RW losing to Hutch at home so tell me how NP gets the 1# seed.

Because they are undefeated in the section besides the loss to red wing and a win over them next game would cancel out the loss.backcheck101 wrote:If NP wins tuesday and that is if. New Prague beat Lourdes, Red Wing lost to Lourdes. If Red Wing and New Prague split New Prague is the #1 seed because they went 2-1 against the top 3 teams in 1A while Red Wing went 1-2.
I don't think New Prague can be any worse than #2, I also don't think Lourdes can be #1 so if New Prague beats Red Wing then I'd have #1-NP, #2 Lourdes, #3 RW; if Red Wing beats New Prague then #1-RW, #2 NP, 3# Lourdes.
Albert Lea is #4, I know they just beat Lourdes but they are 0-2 against Red Wing and New Prague, so 1-3 against the top 3.

Wish I could be there...should be a good game.
New Prague is also on a roll. They have scored seven or more in each of the last four games.
NP had a poor outing in teh first meeting between these teams. I expect them to be ready this week.
I predict a one-goal game (or 2-goal with empty netter)
Question....when does 1A do their seeding?
