The Jacks don't score much. They had two goals or less in 17 of 25 games, and not once did they score more than four in a game. The Jacks need to win with defense. Averaging just under 2.2 goals per game, they are by far the lowest scoring team in the section.GR3343 wrote:Nobody on their roster has more than 14 pts. To be fair, 13-point scorer Colton Roy missed a large portion of the season for Cloquet. He's probably their best offensive player, and one of the few on the roster with experience from the recent playoff runs.
If Cloquet's defense fails them, though, they definitely are doomed. There's no way they can get away with giving up 5 goals like they did in the semifinals last year.
In the second game against East (according to the radio people), Cloquet went into a defensive shell to keep the score down and tried to take advantage of a few chance breakaways when East got too far in. It actually worked pretty well, considering the final score was much closer than the talent gap between the teams. I'd look for them to try the same thing tonight.

KOZY 1320 AM (Grand Rapids)

not the web
"Nothing Runs like a Greyhound"
Score much?!?
For crying out loud, Cloquet only has 5 wins!! For all of 08-09 season! This is going to be a yawner - Many will find themselves underwhelmed.
But I could be wrong.

Wow, CEC ends both the girls and boys season. Sounds like Thompson was extremly good and CEC got lucky a few times. Defensman Paul Johnson stuck his stick out in front of an empty net late in the game and a Grand Rapids shot hit him on the tape. Also sounds like the CEC seniors stepped up pretty well tonight. That is very good to see as they have taken a lot of heat this year. Good job. One down, two to go

I am going to make myself look smart now.

I guess I have Cloquet pegged pretty well by now. This script seems pretty accurate too:karl(east) wrote:If they give Cloquet life early, though, this one could go badly. Over the past few years, Cloquet has been very good at taking advantage of its opportunities when they smell blood. If it's close late, I think Cloquet will pull it off.

No one stepped up for CEC tonight except the goaltender. Rapids totally dominated. Shots were 45 to 14 and Rapids missed the net on several good opportunities. Aside from a couple curious offsetting calls by the refs, they did do a nice job of letting the boys play. The Jacks will have to step-up their game if they are to have any chance on Saturday. Best of luck. Hats off to the Rapids seniors. It's been a pleasure watching these young men come up through the program.wild77 wrote:Wow, CEC ends both the girls and boys season. Re: Cloquet vs GR
Huh did I say 2-1? Yes.. Did it happen? Yes.. Did I say Colton Roy would have a good game?.... Yes... Did it happen?... Only if you think the GWG is a good gameBigWorm wrote:If Cloquet can shut down Rendle and Skrbec they will be successful, I also like what I've seen in Thompson the past few games. Im taking Cloquet-2 Rapids-1, I'll say Jack McFarlane gets the GWG in OT, I also see Colton Roy having a good game, as long as Cloquets D-men can hold there own they have a chance for the upset. If Rendle plays to his full potential tomorrow night though see ya hockey hello golf for Cloquet. I'd also like to say this is a classic quarterfinal matchup. I don't think you'll see a Cloquet-Rapids quarterfinal matchup for awhile after this one. Cloquet will be back next year.

Jordan Thompson stole the show, and CEC capitalized on their few oppurtunities. I was listening to the Rapids announcers for the 2 minutes left in their post-game on the way home, and they were in awe of Thompson and how we (Cloquet) always have a goaltender step up and play tough come playoff time, regardless of the season record. They also mentioned CEC defender Paul Johnson making a save himself, batting the puck away from an open net. I missed that part being on the other side of the ice
Hopefully from our side of it, Thompson can stay hot and put on a shot Saturday. You can only expect he'll see a ton of shots again.
I'll post some photos (from the CEC offensive zones) sometime tonight or Wednesday in the photos section.
