League 1 Championship

Highland Central Red 1 Tartan 0

It's FANTASTIC that a true B team wins this league that is loaded with ringers.

Tartan and Mahtomedi Blue play tomorrow to determine the 2nd automatic regional bid for League 1. The loser will play the 3rd place team from League 6 for another bid.

Congratulations Highland Red, but all is not as perfect in the Capital City as it may first appear >>>

Highland Red is the B1 team and Highland Blue is the lower talent team :? Separating two teams by talent and then playing in the same division?

League Standings
Highland Red 10-3-3
Highland Blue 3-13-0

The balance in this entire D1/D2 tournament has been great. Scores are not posted, but almost every game has been decided by only one or two goals with many games going into overtime.

Moundsview (8 seed) played both Mahtomedi teams very well. Roseville went further than they should have on paper, while Irondale did not play to their expectations. Highland Red regrouped and has played very well after loosing to Mahtomedi Gold 5 - 1 in one of their last league games.

Mahtomedi Blue has struggled to dominate in the playoffs. They have won or lost every game by a goal with two wins in overtime. There is no domination now?

I spoke to a parent on one of the Mahtomedi teams. Mahtomdedi Blue beat Mahtomedi Gold 3-2 with seconds left on the clock in overtime. Blue out shot Gold over 30 shots to 15.

The Tartan - Mahtomedi Blue game should be a fun one to watch today. Tartan has beaten Mahtomedi Blue the last two games, both times by one goal. Mahtomedi is probably due to take this one???

You're absolutely WRONG about that. The Red team is all but 2 'first year' U12s, the Blue team all but 1 or 2 'second year' U12s. So if either is considered B1, it would be the Blue team. Don't make comments like this without knowing anything.

I will confirm Jolly's comments. That is what some Highland Blue parents told me too. They were not a happy group of parents

One parent said Highland Red girls are the prospects for "next year's A team"

According to the handful of Highland Blue parents I met they said: that is not how two B teams should be divided. It should be on talent.

I told them take it to their board.

Centennial apparently did the same thing at B and Edina at A.

Anyway congrats again to Highland Red on a well played tournament - I do not want to go any further with this off subject discussion. Back to the results![/quote]

I don't know if mahtomedi blue will take this one every game between these two are 1 goal games and don't end until the final buzzer whoever loses will have played a great game and deserve the final spot in regions but if someone was to predict a score it would be 1 0 or 2 1 either way can't tell you who will win today. Mahtomedi blue is 1 2 against tartan this year winning the first game but then losing games 2 and 3 so it will be a very good game, i wouldn't be surprised if the game went to overtime today at highland north

D6 isn't done yet.

Ran into some Edina White parents - apparently the Edina Green/White game went into multiple overtimes with White coming out ahead 3-2. Guess they made the A teams wait a bit...

Green vs White again tomorrow for D6 #1 Seed

Ringers, as in U12B teams that don't have 12A teams in their association, meaning they often have 2,3,4 or more A-level players. I say that tongue-in-cheek because I have defended these teams in the past, although I have less patience now that I've seen the Mahtomedi teams the last couple weeks. There is one player who has no business playing in a B league. Coaches and parents have said she scores almost all the goals for her team. There are 5 of these teams in League 1--the two Mahtomedi teams, Tartan (although I heard that they've allowed girls to waive out if they wanted), Irondale, and Forest Lake. No surprise that these teams made up 4 of the top 5 seeds.

This would make an interesting debate. IMO, before an association should be eligible for a second B team at a level of play, it should be required to have an A team at that level.
As for Tartan, three of its top players were invited to play high school hockey. The two that had previously played U12A, went on to play varsity.

Might still be playing in D8 - only been an hour since the start.

Cent Red vs Princeton - I thought it would be much closer than the score - maybe it was.

Princeton didn't come out like they have previously and Red was very agressive. Princeton came back in the 3rd but their 2nd defensive line which was #16 and #8 couldn't stop them and they got beat every time. There were a few questionable officiating calls against Princeton and I can say that even as a Red fan. Red was on their game and I think P just had a bad game.

Red played like they're capable of. Officiating is always questionable. It went both ways. I saw one one of the defenseman for Red not even play due to illness. Real season starts now!

I don't have anything to say. Our girls did not play well. Nothing more to say other than that. Onto Regions....
