Being unbiased with this game (have had no association with either schools) when watching the video I think the knee by Mausolf was pretty immature. Westin appears that he embelished a little bit, but is that how you really get even with another player like that by kneeing him when hes on the ground? And then with the spittng incident...childish. Glad to see Virginia won this game.

I agree, the ref's missed a few potential icing on both sides, but they didn't screw up and cost Marshall a goal. On the tape, you can see that Lustig made the save and the puck never went over the line.HSH1212 wrote:It wasn't well ref'd at all. There were several non icing calls aganist Marshall and Virginia. The ref's seemed very indecisive. One would have put his hand up, and the other wouldn't call it. One of these costed Marshall a goal. Now I am not blaming the refs for the outcome, because they weren't biased, but they seemed scared in their calls. If they aern't ready for these games, then have others take the game.goldenbear85 wrote:Muazolf definitely skated up to Westin and knee'd him in the head, and Westin looks like he embelished it.elliott70 wrote:#6 & #27 for Marshall should be suspended.
These two have no class. If they were at Hill, I think they would be in front of a review.
Virginia and the balance of Marshall were just playing hockey from what can be seen from the video.
What about #16 from Marshall giving #14 from Virginia 2-handed slashes and hooks at the blue line. Wow!
Here's something more serious. I think #27 came off the bench to enter the ruckus and then butt-end Westin in the neck. During Westin's break-away, he is not one of the D on the ice. Then, later he comes crashing in to the Mauzolf/Judnick battle, and at that point, I can count 6 Marshall skaters on the ice. After he butt-ends Westin, there are 6 Marshall skaters plus the goalie on the ice, and the 7th (Mauzolf) in the penalty box.
If he came off the bench to mix it up and butt-end Westin, the MSHSL will definitely be involved.
You know what's really sad? That fact that this was a really well played, well ref'd, exciting game, with very little chippy crap, until Marshall went down 4-2. Instead of talking about what a great game it was, instead we are talking about this garbage.
Fortunately, the Section 7 finale game should be a barn burner, with a packed house, since the Hibbing and Virginia fans really support their teams. Should be fun.
The video really showed what happended. Here's what I would have called.
2 min Westin (for hitting Paul)
Intentional or not, this is a penalty.
2 min Mausolf (kneeing)
I don't understand why Mausolf would do this. The video shows that he kneeded Westin, although it is obvious that Westin embellished it. Either way, a penalty for Mausolf.
2 min Judnick (roughing)
As much as I understand the announcers frustation, he makes no mention of Judnick's hit.![]()
2 min Westin (2 embellishments)
The second one wasn't shown, we just see Westin laying on the ice. However, he is not hurt, because the next shift, he goes back on the ice. Depending on perspective, Westin was a genius for what he did or a faker.
4 min Williams (double minor for roughing, slashing)
This is really what killed the Toppers. Williams had no business in on this.
result: 6 minutes a piece
Overall, the more I look at it, the more Marshall screwed up. They would have had a 5-3. They ended up evened up, which is fair, but still, a 5-3 could have been the difference in a comeback or not.
By the way, this is really unbiased look at. Some range folks will argue for the non embellishment call on Westin, but he did it twice.
In the game, Mausolf got 2 penalties. Does anyone know what his other was? The knee was obvious, but what was the other one.
The ref's did a good job by taking their time to let things settle down after the collision/knee/fight/butt-end, so tempers could settle, and they got the rest of the penalties right.
I think Mauzolf's other penalty was roughing (with Judnick).
Some range folks will argue for the non embellishment call on Westin, but he did it twice.
I don't think so. The butt-end to the neck was definitely not faked. I'm just waiting for people to accuse Westin of carrying actor's make-up in his jersey so he can fake redness and swelling. The embelishment with the knee to the head is a REALLY tough call to make if you are the ref on the ice, making the call in real time...especially when he actually did get knee'd in the head.
