3AA Apple Valley (14-12-1) vs. Cretin (19-7-1) March 5th

Post by wbmd »

Record wise, it's not a good match-up. However, 4th seeded Apple Valley plays a tough schedule and is playing stronger as the season progresses. The 2nd seeded Raiders will obviously have to continue their late season run as well to succeed.

Comments and predictions are welcome.

If Aaron Gretz plays like he did against Woodbury, Apple Valley has a good chance of beating Cretin.

No prediction just comments on btoh teams from the other night. CDH has some fast forwards that can really pick the corners. Alt back at D showed good defensive skills but didn't do a lot on the offensive side of things. Eagan didn't test their D or goalie alot really most of their shots came from skating into the zone with the puck and taking a wrist shot that the goalie would easily glove. Anyone have any insight on how good the goaltending is there? Cretin's PP is very effective and can be dangerous.

Apple Valley of course had Gretz playing very well last night. Smith and Sikich on D looked smooth and confident and skated the puck up into the zone alot. Robson was a little off early on but settled down but I don't think that'll be the case for the finals. Forward wise they need to turn the breakaways they had into goals for the finals. Ness made nice saves on them but you gotta have those. They need to not chase as much on the PK they got away with it a little bit but CDH moves the puck better than Woodbury on the PP. They need to keep their top 2 lines and PP clicking like they have the last 2 nights as well. 3rd line needs to do what they did last night if it was pretty or not just keep them off the board when they're out there.

Should be a great game between two teams that are really playing well right now. Special teams could easily be the difference on Thursday wether it be PP or SH goals.

This will be an interesting game, but I think Apple Valley will take it because they've had such a great year. Where is this game being played?

Apple Valley has the coaching advantage with Hayes. AltaVilla is a big PLUS also. +2 on coaching side
Chris Fisher is back and will contribute.

Yeah - that championship game in 1996 was a flawed win with allegations of cheating. I don't remember hte details, but i do remember there was controversy.

I saw the AV Woodbury game and saw Cretin play earlier in the year. Not sure that Cretin will match up too well here. I'll take AV 4-1.

AV beating Cretin....come on, could happen, but not likely..

Post by smw1111 »

To those people that think AV plays a tough schedule.....who have they played.......except Bloomington Jefferson and EP (two great teams none the less...but that is only 4 losses....who gave them the other 8 losses and a tie?). The eagles are 3-6 in the last month (Feb3 loss to Jefferson). Yes they beat Woodbury...which Cretin lost to twice....BUT Cretin WORKED an Eagan team that AV lost to less 2 weeks ago (1-0 and also lost to Eagan earlier in the season also 3-0) Cretin has only lost 3 times in the last 2 months January 3 (12-3-1). I know that the AV goalie is hot....but people that actually saw the AV game against Woodbury would say that AV didnt win the game as much as their GOALIE won the game....Woodbury was really taking to AV most of the game, but didnt get the biscuit in the net........and as we all know that happens......The real question is will the AV goalie be able to with stand a confident barrage from the sharpshooting Cretin top two lines.

I am not saying that AV cant win, what I am saying is that Cretin is a way better team that has two VERY good/fast lines that are now HEALTHY and making a run.......and AV has a hot goalie. We shall see on thursday night, but the smart hockey people will always tell you.......that they would rather have a great D and a unchallenged "solid" goalie than a super goalie (which Gretz isnt that super, he is just good) and a poor D....and AV cant score alot if they DONT many chances..........Cretin has the D and O along with a solid goalie and well AV has a supspect D and O with a good goalie that has gotten hot in the sectionals..........

The tender30 wrote:The Eagles will roll through the Raiders like a freight train headed to the X!!! The key to this game lies in a hidden place. It is like when you find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It's been a large player in sport since the age of the neadrathals. The Apple Valley Eagles have this; it is called the STAT MEN. The Eagles are led by two of them. They both have two years of experience and both show great senior leadership. They are salivating at the chance of going to state, and maybe sitting in the press box at the Xcel in mid March. I highly doubt their dreams of going to state will be stopped by some private school kids. This one will not be close. These two men have worked too hard to go this far and lose now. The hockey team will play in their honor, and use that to slaugther the Raiders.

Eagles-4
Raiders-0
YOU are totally right........I think the key is your comment.......but not where you think the key is....the key to this game is in "hidden places" LIKE this so-called "POT" of GOLD........I think your key to your prediction is in the "hidden" bong water remnants of the Jamacian "GOLD" that YOU have been smoking.....Also remember this, there is no bigger sports school in the MODERN ERA of Minnesota HS sports than Cretin. I am Fairly certain they are the ONLY SCHOOL in the state to win all 4 major boys sports title since 1974 (the year when Private schools and Public schools combined their championships). They have state titles in Baseball (easier to tell you the years they havent won it), Football, Basketball and Hockey..........LOOK it up.........AND weird thing is they DONT recruit....they way you get into Cretin usually is being related to Alumni

Again, Cretin has more weapons. I said this in the other thread with Eagan too. Valley has a very good goalie...but Cretin has so much offensive firepower. I've seen Cretin OWN some great goalies in the SEC this season too, this one won't be really close unless Gretz stops 40+ shots, because I think that's what he will see.

Cretin... on paper

Post by stpaulmick »

CDH is 11-1 in their last 12 and fresh off a 6-0 hammering of an Eagan squad that beat AV 1-0 a week earlier.

AV is 5-6-1 with one win over a quality opponent, Woodbury, who obviously struggled against anemic Rosemount. Tough time for Woodbury to slump - that was a good team.

On paper, there's no denying this is a CDH win. I smell a Damian Rhodes-like run by Mr. Getz, however. AV 2-1.

Cretin is a slight favorite...other than that your take is way off. First of all what planet are you on in regards to the WDBY game?? Shots were dead even and AV had at least as many chances....WDBY's goalie was just as hot by the way. As has been posted this is a different AV team..this lineup and at full strength would have taken 3rd in the Lake this yr..imop. AV's 1st 2 lines are just as good as Cretin's..no question about that. Cretin's D s better....AV's goalie is better. Should be a great game..you might want to go to it as I can tell you haven't seen AV play recently. As far as the constant barrage from Cretin's 2nd line...no chance their 2nd line outscores AV's..no chance.

No reason in making comparisons from common opponents. You could put all sorts of arguements in for this game then by using Park, Woodbury, Eagan, Lakeville North, there could be more I'm not sure. The 6-0 win over CDH doesn't matter at this point nor does the 2-0 win for AV.

Bottom line is it's going to be a good game and like I said before I think it comes down who is smarter and not taking dumb penalties and special teams for which team will win this one.

All I have to say is that woodbury picked a bad time to start playing poorly...their close game with rosemount then the loss to apple valley.. so im going to say cretin will win this one, because unlike woodbury they picked a good time to start playing well, and there is no way apple valley is going to be able to stop them. Cretin 4-0
