I have been watching AHA for over 15 years now. I have seen several AHA games this year . The team held Edina's first line from scoring during the game 5 on 5 but gave up 2 short handed goals and then an empty netter. Take those goals away and it was 1-1. The AHA power play has struggled since mid season giving opposing teams many short handed opportunities and never scoring at the games I attended. When you are trying to hold a team like Edina from scoring you need to make adjustments to weaknesses in your game. They didn't make the adjustments and they paid the price.
say what?
Take the goals away and it was 1-1?
Good teams don't give up a shorthanded goal, let alone two.
The AHA powerplay was pathetic. I'm sorry but using a freshman on the pp in this game is not what I would call good coaching.
AHA had them and they let Edina back in. Big mistake.

If you take away the 2 short handed goals and empty netter it was an even game. The formation and combination of players on those power plays has not worked for some time now and my point was if you can't see that and make the necessary changes you pay the price like they did yesterday. AHA has had many good teams in the past 5 years but their inability to make the necessary changes when needed has cost them each time. As skilled as that freshman player was he wasn't ready to be playing a team like Edina and the only reason he could have been on that power play was politics.

AHA controlled the first period and 3/4 of the second. After that, theres not too much to say. Their power plays just weren't working out. Little fall outs in their defense resulted in Edina scoring. I think they could've used Haeg, he might've gotten us couple points. By the way, the crowd was INTENSE! I never realized how much fun it is with the chanting back and forth. IT was a packed house just like last year's game was at BIG. The cheerleaders put on quite a show too, Haha. Its always nice to see some cheerleaders that can skate. I'm sadden to see my team lose but there's always next year

i love that one where they go out on the ice and spell out "AHA" gets me every time... HaHa.

HA had em. The reason they lost was because the coach refused to put a defenseman on the first powerplay even though they are more than well equipped to play there. Their 2 shortys were scored bacause they came down on a 2 on 1 on HA's C. Reilly who isn't experienced at defense and the Hornets took advantage. and they had an empty netter so say what you will but even without haeg the stars coulda won this game with minor a personel change. I think the stars would have faired better too in the third because Everson's snip shorthanded the first shift was a huge momentum killer that made it 3-1.
I agree with you sicksauce. I never seen a top team play 5 forwards on their first power play line. Somehow you must have the confidence to put a defenseman out there. I understand having 4 forwards and 1 defenseman, but not 5 forwards. I think this really cost them.
As far as the freshman out on the ice...That is definitely a kid I would remember, because I bet he ends up playing college hockey. The kid showed great patience for a frehsman. I never really saw him panic all that much. I think this shows how weak the defenseman are for AHA.
Another thing about this game...I was not at all impressed with Mattson. I really expected him to go out and do more in a game like that. It appeared to me he was always looking to make the pass, instead of doing things himself. The thing that confused me was he would always skate off very tired, but it didnt seem like he did much on those shifts. Maybe he was sick or something. Anyone with an unbiased opinion share their thoughts about Mattson's performance?
I was more impressed with Jefferson and Tonka then Edina. Thursday will be interesting!!

I agree with your asseessment about Mattson and he didn't control the game like Lee and Everson did for Edina.Tigers33 wrote:I agree with you sicksauce. I heard at the game that Everson was sick but didn't really see it in his play.
Both Lee and Mattson looked sick, as well. Occassionally, when Mattson would come off he would go to the end of the bench with a water bottle and take his helmet off and just sit there like he was trying to cool off. He wasn't the same as I had seen him earlier and he didn't look like his usual explosive self. As for Lee, he seemed to take penalties because he wasn't moving his feet and he also got pushed around more than he ever has, he also looked a little tentative to get into physical battles and that is definitely not his style. I don't think I have ever seen someone take him off his feet with a check and AHA did it for sure once and I think twice and they don't hit nearly as hard as some of the teams Edina has played earlier. Don't get me wrong, Lee still played very well, just his game and especially his physical prescense weren't quite the same as I had seen them earlier.
I disagree on the Lee posting. All he really did was go to the box three times. He is not an all-around player. If he would play a little more D he would be a great player. He is a good player and I would love to have him on the team.
I believe that Trebil knows what he is doing. He has coached many Batam teams with excellent players at Bloomington and has 5 trips to the state tournament with AHA with 2 championships, a third, fourth and consolation championship under his belt. He played that power play all year and it worked. He has his reasons and if you noticed he did make some changes at D in the third moving Mike Reilly to forward and Hartman back to D. My one question for him would be why he played McNamara instead of Hurley on the third line. But he is the coach and I am sure he had his reasons.

33, you game replays are always worth the price of admission. Everson was not sick, nor was Mattson or Lee, and your details on Lee which seems to be the only player you only watch are comical? Lee was by far the most physical player on the ice Saturday, and the penalties due to not moving his feet, priceless.... Its ok to root for your guy, just don't look so stupid and assume this game was played in Quebec and you were the only one there.scoreboard33 wrote:I agree with your asseessment about Mattson and he didn't control the game like Lee and Everson did for Edina.Tigers33 wrote:I agree with you sicksauce. Congrats to Michael Sit whose 2 goal burst late in the second period opened things up for the Hornets. Ankeny was also very solid in the first period on a number of good scoring opps for AHA. Mattson had a tough task yesterday with Haeg out. He finishes his HS career well over 200 points and solid hockey future ahead. Best of Luck Danny, a great kid as well.

Zamman--I have coached the game and I have to disagree with you. I have seen several of the games this year and that power play did not work and it hasn't worked all season. Everyone in the stands where I was sitting was talking about it. All they needed to do was not let them score on the their own power play and it was even. HA D shut Edinas top line down 5 on 5. They even shut down Edinas power play. Big price to pay for not making the adjustments and it cost this team a trip to the finals. Good Luck to Danny Mattson he is a great player and to the other seniors as well.

First of all, have you ever seen Lee get knocked off his feet when he decides to drive toward the net with the puck? He was still easily the strongest player on the ice, but he didn't take on players like he usually does. He still played well. How come you get so upset whenever I say anything about Lee, but if I say something not flattering about another player you never seem to challenge it. It seems you have a connection to Lee. Two hooking penalties, one when Edina was in on a five on three. Both lazy penalties that come from playing with your stick more than your feet. This was all speculation, but Lee didn't look as strong as usual and didn't throw his body around like he usually does. He might not have been sick, but he wasn't the same player I have seen for most of the year.hornetsnest wrote:33, you game replays are always worth the price of admission. If you saw Danny Mattson doing what I described, you'd think he was sick, also. He was kelled over on the bench with his helmet off sitting behind the defensemen spraying water all over, not bothering to watch the play for a good 2 minutes.
Thanks for the post, Mr. Lee, definately classy.

Classy? try respecting and supporting the efforts of all the players on the Hornets, and fathom this 33, your opponents as well. Mattsons career will far exceed your hockey dreamland. I'll be sure to pass on these notes to Mr. Lee on Thursday. I don't see how anything I said detracts from Mattson's or Lee's career. Both put up numbers that speak for themselves, are going to great college programs and will probably get drafted fairly high in the NHL draft. I don't think my opinion of there play in one game is disrespectful, its what I think.hornetsnest wrote:Classy? try respecting and supporting the efforts of all the players on the Hornets, and fathom this 33, your opponents as well. I think I call it the way I see it and after earlier games, I have said other players didn't play well and you never say anything. I have said Lee was easily the best player on the ice and said that other players didn't look great and you have never said anything. I can recall two games where I have said something bad about Lee's play and both times you have gone nuts. I have never seen anytime when I have bashed Lee as a player, just his play in a game. You say I watch Lee more than any other player, wouldn't that make sense, his line is out more than any other line and he consistently makes things happen and is almost always involved in the scoring plays. When i say his play isn't up to the standard he set for himself, I'm not bashing him, I say he didn't play like he usually does.
As for supporting Lee, I know i supported him in many posts about the Elite League and I'm pretty sure I have even said that he is challenging Budish and Leddy for the title of best player on team southwest, if not in the league. He was playing unbelievable at that point and I complimented him. I have proven that I will compliment him when he plays well and say something abuot him when he plays bad. You have proven that you will bash me anytime I say something bad about the way he played in one game.
You still haven't responded to any of the things that I saw in the game, try adding something next time you post. This board is for analysis of the game and the analysis may not always be flattering to every player in the game, these kids are in high school and they will be much better in some games than others, just like the pros, I just comment on who looked particularly strong or weak in the games.
