Two pretty evenly-matched teams, and if there's an edge it would have to be the fact that almost every time these teams meet in the post-season, Red Wing's Nemanich outcoaches the Lourdes guy pretty badly.
I remember sitting with an NHL scout when RW beat Lourdes in the state semis in 2002 or 2003, and the scout was pointing out how RW was countering everything Lourdes tried to do, RW was getting all the matchups they wanted, etc. "This guy is puting on a coaching clinic," the scout said. Same thing a couple years ago when RW beat Lourdes in the section semis, Nemanich totally outcoached Haskins. He really gives them a big edge.
On the other hand, it's home ice and home crowd for Lourdes, and RW is trying to do it with a sophomore goalie who's never been through this before. Those things might offset the coaching edge. Should be a terrific game.

George is a great coach I agree.
I had the good luck to coach Reid Cashman Underwood LaPlante and the two Pohls brothers Mike and Tom that Fall. I told the coaches at Lourdes that if they continued to make those soft crossrink passes in the neutral zone those kids would eat them alive with 3-2 line rushes. Red Wing scored right away but it actually got to be a close game and Adam Gill almost tied it. I think it ended 4-2 or something. Red Wing did jump on the soft neutral zone passes and they made good plays and buried the puck.
The great thing about the Red Wing kids is they listen to the coach and try to do what he wants and do it as hard as they can. It has always been a pleasure to coach George's kids because they listen and work hard and do their best. I credit it to the culture at Red Wing Parents Players and Coaches. They stick together and work together from what I see.
I was at the Lourdes vs Totino Grace game and a good friend of mine that is currently an NHL scout with Montreal and a great gopher player and captain and (HS coach himself State Champions 1 time) I did not ask but first thing he said he thought Lourdes was very well coached I personally have coached with all the assistants and I know coach Aaron Gill very well he will not be out coached or outcompeted. It is wonderful to see a Rochester HS group play all three lines with great balance and play harder at the end then at the beginning. Aaron Gill and all the coaches have done a great job and I know they want to win it all.
Good Luck to all the boys on both teams it will be their game win or lose.
And I know they are going to be proud of their efforts. Both teams have had a great year.
I know all the players are going to leave it out there. Either team will be a great representative of our area and we should be proud to have such hard working players and coaches in So MN.
I wish it was Thursday tomorrow!!!!!

I think Roy Nystrom did a great job with those Albert Lea Tigers too and the New Prague boys played a nice game and had a great season.
the first line for Albert Lea never quit and if a couple of pipe shots went in they would be playing on Thursday night.
I thought the Albert Lea vs Red Wing game was great. Lots of energy and end to end action.

I can't wait for this game or any of the games coming up on Thursday, but I think more people will be watching EP, Minnetonka, Edina, and Jefferson.Sioux Fan wrote:Is it almost Thursday yet...

Does anyone agree with me when i would say that Rochester, no matter what rink it is at, is the farthest from a neutral site for sections 1a and 1aa teams to play at? I say this because of the NP vs Lourdes game. I was down there to watch it and couldn't help but notice all the Lourdes signs all over the place, and Century and Mayo and etc......The reason i think this is because of the time the Rochester fans have to decorate the building and how much more convienient it is for them to have the games there. My solution to the problem would be...have the 1a games at a 1aa rink like Owatonna...and have the 1aa games at a 1a rink like Mankato or something. Maybe this is something the orginizers could look into? Just my .02. Any suggestions?

What is the capacity at Owatonna vs. the Rec Center. I've also wondered why Class A couldn't be there.
Also...I think the Alltel Center in Mankato would probably have better capacity than the Rec Center.... It would be a true neutral site. I don't think East or West play there during the season. I do remember going to an occasional youth game there before Mankato put up its second rink.
However, it is too far from most of the schools, so it would never happen. Back when Section 1 went across the entire southern part of the state, 10 years ago, it might have been a good alternative, though.

Unless you can fill up the Alltel Center with more than 50% capacity it's not a good venue for a sectional game. It holds close to 5000 and a typical A section game may draw 1200. The atmosphere and noise level just isn't very good with that few people in an arena that size. Versus a place like Gustavus, where 1200 fans crammed in there rocks.Owatonna's rink doesn't have very good lighting and the wooden bleachers suck. I thought the Rec Center was a great place for the semi's and finals last year. Good atmosphere and good seating.

Who cares where it is really; a Lourdes Banners isn't going to help them win; and any Red Wing fan that has attended games at home will not think Rochester is too far to drive for a section championship game. There will be plenty of fans for each team; I just hope each set of fans are respectful of the others.
The Rec will not be an advantage for Lourdes regardless of how many signs or banners get hung. The air is warmer than Graham. The ice is not as hard. The ceiling is higher. The Plexiglass does not bounce the same. The goal line to end board distance is different. The corner radius is different. The Zamboni gate and dead spots play different. The sites in section 1A and 1AA are selected based on seating capacity and tourney manager. The boys 1A & 1AA tourney manager is the Mayo AD. The girls 1A&1AA tourney manager is the Owatonna AD. The semis and finals for those tourneys are located in the place where the manager lives so the logistics work. In the early 70's, and probably later, the Section 1 final was at the Met but even if that arena was still around I bet the $$$ would be prohibitive.

I guess I just get the feeling that it is not truly a neutral site because of what town it is in. I dont see how you can realistically say any Rochester team does not have an advantage there. The only thing neutral about it is the ice and rink specs, and thats where it stops. No Lakeville or New Prague etc.... fan is going to drive that distance that early before game time to decorate it, and for some reason I get the feeling that that would not go over well with Rochester crowds, or Arena managers of the Rec center. That is my opinion.

Do any signs and/or banners help a team win a game? They are strictly for the fans and I am willing to bet these players do not even notice the signs. If they do then they obviously are not concentrating on the game enough if they are worried about some girlfriend or mom putting a sign up on the glass!!!NippenTopChed08 wrote:I guess I just get the feeling that it is not truly a neutral site because of what town it is in. Not directly they dont affect the game. But they give the Rec Center a more "rochester" hometown attitude and feel to it. This does play a role in the game. it gets the crowd fired up and the players feed off that energy. Its not the signs alone either, its also the fact that Rochester has more opportunity to draw in a crowd....I mean think about it.....If it is a tuesday night game at the Rec Center who is more likely to have a crowd advantage Century or Lakeville South? Century. Its becuase more people from century are willing to drive 5-10 minutes to get to the Rec Center than people for Lakeville are willing to drive the HOur and a Half on a school night. Im not saying that that teams like Lakeville and New Prague dont have dedicated fans, I am saying that driving time is a factor on nights when they could be doing other things than sitting in a car 3 hours round trip. I think they should have it at a more neutral site than any 1a or 1aa rink, somewhere that the driving distance would be about the same for every set of fans....I think that it really does have an affect on the games....(and im not ignorant by thinking there is a central point the same distance away from all teams...I know there isn't.) Why not having it at a school that is not in either section? I dont think that would be a half bad idea.southernmnscout wrote:Do any signs and/or banners help a team win a game? If you have it at a school that is not in the section where would you have it for Section 1 games?? In the metro? THat would be the closest to a section 1 team is you wanted it in another section. Now you are not even close to any of the teams except for Lakeville.
I think that no matter where you have it someone is going to complain about where it is being held so this is a pointless conversation.

Ok, i get what you (NippenTopChed08) are getting at. Yes Rochester is obviously close to everyone who lives there. But don't give me this crap about driving an HOUR to an HOUR and a half. Rochester people have been doing that their entire lives to go play or watch hockey. I think making the trip once or twice a year down to Rochester won't hurt them.
Nippentopched8,
You make a great point, this is not a fair spot. If you live in Rochester for example and have nothing to do on a Tuesday night why not go down to the Rec. center to watch some hockey even if you are not a die-hard hockey fan. Then when you get their you see a bunch of kids from school and 10 other kids like you who had nothing better to do. You just added 10 kids to the already crowded Rochester group. In this case if you are sitting at your house on Tuesday evening in Lakeville I don't expect you to just say out of the blue, "Let's drive down to Rochester and watch hockey." Escpecially if you aren't a die-hard fan.
All in all the fan plays a huge role in the game. If you have a fan section that is always yelling and cheering for you then you feel like you really can when the game. Let's think about, fans these days aren't always positive. When you hear the fans chanting suive suive suive, it makes you wanna hear it again and again.
You heard my take and I know many people will disagree with me.

I remember back in the late ninety's when they had the section finals back to back at Marriucci. Even though they didn't pack the place, it doesn't get any better than that....Sioux Fan wrote:I love having the 4 games in one site on Saturday it is great. Lot's of other schools have won the Section title at the Rec Center...
I hope they never move em again.
The only thing that the Rec Center has over Marriucci is a regulation size sheet, I don't like the idea about having the section final on an Olympic size sheet, other than that, Marriucci hands down over the Rec Center.

The way I look at it is that what a better place to beat Lourdes than in Rochester at the Rec in front of all their fans.
Side Note: Red Wing was 9-3 during the regular season away, Lourdes were 9-5 at HOME during the regular season. Lourdes had a better record away than they did at home so is being at the Rec an advantage for them?
We will see tonight.

Pretty sure the Rec center didn't help Lourdes last year in the final. My guess is there will be more RW fans than Lourdes fans just like last year when 75% of the crowd were from Mankato. Lourdes does not draw well for hockey. You will find more fans at a Lourdes girls basketball gameTheBlizzard wrote:The way I look at it is that what a better place to beat Lourdes than in Rochester at the Rec in front of all their fans.
