SCOUTING REPORTS ON AA TOURNEY TEAMS

Post by saintpaulhockey »

Heading into the tourney it would be nice to see some honest scouting reports on the teams in the AA state tourney. Anything will be better than the hackjob done by the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press.

Eden Prairie:

The Eagles are a very young and talented team on the rise. They are lead by their senior captian defensman Nick Leddy, a favorite for the Mr. Hockey award. This year was the first year that the class of 2011, the so called "super sophomores" made their mark on the Eagle's varsity squad. They are lead by forward Kyle Rau, the team's leading scorer and include 10 sophomores in total that play on the varsity team. They had a win over Jefferson 5-2 and their only three losses were to Edina, whom they lost twice to by one goal each time and in overtime one game, and a loss to Jefferson by one early in the year. Sophomore goalie Andrew Ford has impressed as he has been the Eagle's starter for the latter part of the year and has come up big in big games. The Eagles are a very talented team on both ends of the ice and should be a force to be reckoned with in this year's tourney.

Sounds like if everyone sticks around, EP should be very good in two years

Their # 1 ranking in Let's Play Hockey suggests they are a very good team this year.

Duluth East:
The strength of this team lies in its defensive corps, which is led by Junior UND recruit Derek Forbort and 3 seniors. They are offensive-minded defensemen who are very good at keeping the pressure up on opposing teams. Forbort shifts to forward on the PP. The forwards are led by UMD recruit Max Tardy, who is by far the team's leading scorer. There are no other real standout forwards, but there are 9 other very capable players, who give Mike Randolph the opportunity to roll 3 quality lines, all of which are capable of contributing. The forwards are on the smaller side, but they play big, and the defensemen are huge. Senior goalie Matt Cooper might be the best in the tournament, though he can get streaky at times. His play will likely dictate how far East can get in the tournament.

Cretin-Derham Hall

CDH is anchored by Gopher recruit Mark Alt. Alt, a 6-4 D, is a rangy player with tons of athleticism who is usually the best player on the ice at both ends of the ice. After Alt, however, CDH runs thin in top-notch talent. Senior Tom Zimmerman is big and strong and if he plays well he should be a force. CDH's second line is their best; sophomore Tony Barbato looks like one of the better young two-way players in the state. Small, clever goal scorers like Ben McClellan, Jesse Perron and Bob Kinne are matched with a strong, if unspectacular D-core. Goaltending is above-average with senior Ben Walsh. CDH may win a game of two, they come to state quite hot, but they lack the horses to win three in a row.

Blaine:

The bengals are coming off an anti-climatic 07-08 season after the first round quarterfinal loss to Aaron Ness and company last year in state. Even though Blaine lost many seniors, they returned and gained a lot of talent. They are led by a very talented line in sophomore U of Minnesota commit Nick Bjugstad, Senior captain Zac Frischmon, and a fast dangler junior Eric Scheid. They also have the big guy to lay the checks in Gavin Tufte (Junior).
Some of Blaine's notable defensive players are Power Play sniper Tony Larson, Ryan Brockway, and Matt Blomquist.

Blaine is coming out of a tough section 5AA and a NWSC title. Zac Frischmon has the hot stick for the team right now with 8 goals during section play (2 hat tricks).

Key games for Blaine this season
Win: Roseau 4-1
Loss: Edina 4-8
Tie: Centennial 4-4 Loss: 2-3, Win: (5AA title) 7-1
Win: Duluth East 5-3
Win: Maple Grove 6-1, Win: 7-2
This is BEMIDJI STATE hockey.
