To Those Who CARE

Post by ndirishfighting »

Tomorrow there is to be a meeting on probably one of the deepest hockey areas that has gone down hill on combining with their rival.
Yes Greenway and Grand Rapids may go together in everything.
I never wanted to believe or hear it but it is definately here.

If that is true, I don't have a problem with it.
Enrollments keep dropping. You do what you have to do.
My class in GR had around 430, now they are under 300.
Combining those two could be a very good thing for both.

This is going to happen to a lot of school all around MN, you are going to have to get use to it. But trust me it is very hard to do at first, but its better than not playing at all, and that's the big picture for the kids.

Does anyone know if it does happens what the teams mascot would become? Or would they not decide this until after they make this decision?

I would guess that if Greenway joins isd 318 I think they would just keep the 2 hockey programs seperate. for Example look at the Duluth teams they are mostly in the same school District yet they have there own teams. JMO

Unless the GR school board decide otherwise, they will be the Thunderhawks.

The merge of Grenway into GR & Nashwauk to the north I believe, is for the benefit of the Greenway school district which has financial problems.

I do not know first hand but have been told that it is an expansion of other school districts to include areas that made up the Greenway district.
Changing mascots etc... would be at the school board discretion.

I think the good folks in Grand Rapids would sooner torch Hodgins-Berardo Arena than change their nickname, even though some aren't exactly enamored with Thunderhawks.

Per a pretty reliable source, this is a rumor and was put to rest at the recent greenway schoolboard meeting.

This is a dead issue and will not be a topic of discussion at anymore meetings. That is the info given by someone close to the situation.

I heard the info yesterday from a previous school board meeting. The meeting was ended quickly as tempers started to flare about this issue. Sounds like the GW principal jumped the gun and set a meeting with the GR AD without approval or permission from the GW school district. In the last board meeting, the idea was pretty much shot down and it was decided that it would not be a topic at anymore meetings, thus making it a dead issue. Maybe my source got it wrong, but I doubt it.

This issue is not dead. There is a meeting tonight to discuss the possibility of merging with Rapids. The basketball team is merging with N-K next year. If Greenway hockey is to survive, the program needs to take a serious look at the youth program. The past coaches in the youth levels have given too little ice time to the less talented kids. They need to take a look at Virginia and how their program is run. When kids see that the high school coach is running three and four lines consistently they will stay in the program. Greenway has catered to the "more talented players" and failed to develop the "average" player. Since these "average" players get little ice time at the youth level, they lose interest and quit. Maybe they should try to stick it out, but it is hard to maintain interest when you don't get to play in a game.

At least 17 at the varsity level next season, a year off from jv, 2 bantam teams, 2 pee wee teams, 3 squirt teams and 5 mite teams. Sounds like the numbers are on their way back up. Smaller communities than Bovey/Coleraine have survived and even thrived with fewer numbers than that. Isn't Virginia's enrollment fewer than even Coleraine now? Granted they combine with several much smaller communities, but the numbers are most likely similar. The discussion presented to combine with Grand Rapids was proposed for next season only then go back to being on their own. This helps no one except for a couple of seniors to be and shows little respect for the remaining players in GW. Greenway hockey will survive on its own. Not sure it's even ethical to send the basketball team to Nashwauk and the hockey team to Rapids. What's next? Maybe the baseball team with Hibbing? Not sure that this happens with other co-ops around the state.

As for the meeting, I'm gonna stick with my source and continue thinking this is a dead issue. Like I said before, the source may be wrong, but I'm betting against that.

The same thing is happening to the youth hockey here in Little Falls, and will hurt them in the near future. It's bad something like this has to happen to the younger kids, but still happens when you have hot heads as coach's at the developing ages.

Virginia's enrollment is 498 and Greenway's enrollment is 316. MIB's is 154 and N-K's is 173. Co-op school enrollments are not the same as having those additional students at the host school. The hockey tradition is just not threre. Greenway's enrollment used to be about 600+ in its glory days of the 60's and 70's. My guess is Virginia's was probably 1,000+. You need to look no further than enrollment numbers to understand the decline in Iron Range hockey.
