Famous state tourney OT games
A few long overtime games came to mind, and I was trying to remember who scored the eventual game-winners. Hoping for some help from the masses, and feel free to throw out some other OT memories of your own to reminisce.
1996 AA semifinals, Apple Valley 5, Duluth East 4 (5OT):
AARON DWYER
1992 Tier I semifinals, Jefferson 5, Cloquet 4 (OT):
1995 AA semifinals, Moorhead 5, Rochester Mayo 4 (2OT):
1997 AA semifinals, Edina 5, Hill-Murray 4 (3OT):
SAM CORNELIUS
1999 AA semifinals, Hastings 2, Elk River 1 (2OT):
TRAVIS KIEFFER
2005 A final, Warroad 4, Totino Grace 3 (2OT):
AARON MARVIN

I was just thinking that last week. Hard to believe it could be 20 years since the big boys needed OT to decide a state champ. I have a feeling this year that will change.gitter wrote:1989 State Final
Jefferson 5
Rochester JM 4 (ot)
I think Chris Tucker had the winning goal
EDIT: It's been a long time since a AA championship game went to OT...here's hoping to an OT thriller this Saturday night!

2007 Semi Finals: Burnsville vs. Grand Rapids
Burnsville rallies from three goals down in the final three minutes to send it into OT, only to be heartbroken as Sam Rendle pumps home the GWG. I can imagine it was a great game to watch on TV, but having been there, the atmosphere just added to the overall greatness of this game.

This is obviously the one people remember. What people usually don't remember is that Duluth East scored.Cali Rodent wrote:A few long overtime games came to mind, and I was trying to remember who scored the eventual game-winners. Also the Edina vs Hill game in 1997. IIRC Edina ended up winning their next game in the final 1 - 0. I had several friends that played on that HM team.

One of the best games and come backs in the last 5 years. It's really too bad Grand Rapids got demolished so badly in the final vs Cretin. 7 - 0. (I think it was the same year, I know Grand Rapids lost the final twice)nipeshow18 wrote:2007 Semi Finals: Burnsville vs. Grand Rapids

This was actually the year Roseau won it all, but yes it was another poor showing in the finals by Grand Rapids.adamp1914 wrote:One of the best games and come backs in the last 5 years. I have a tape of this game (well, two tapes actually LOL!). I was a senior at South St. Paul in 1996, and SSP played Edina in the first semifinal game, and I and my two buddies who went to that game simply stayed in our same seats for the nightcap (East-AV), pretty much smack in the middle of the Apple Valley student section (Somewhere out there I still have my old SSP baseball cap, with an AV Eagle sticker stuck over the front of it). I had set the tape at my parents' house to tape the SSP game and it simply kept running after that. During one of the overtime intermissions of the East-AV game, when it became obvious that game would be one worth having on tape, I remember scurrying downstairs at the old Civic Center to find a phone and call my parents to get another tape ready!! This, of course, before everyone you know had a cell phone in their pocket.starmvp wrote:That would be great!SEMNHOCKEYFAN wrote:Dang thats lame! I've watched it a couple times over the years, always a fun experience. But it's just so damn long....

That's awesome. It would be fun to see it again. Is their any footage posted anywhere on the internet?Cali Rodent wrote:I have a tape of this game (well, two tapes actually LOL!). I made a list once, and think I counted 19 players from that game that played at least one game of Division I hockey — or would have if not for other circumstances (Chris Locker committed to Wisconsin, but didn't have the grades; Nick Gretz played baseball instead; Patrick Finnegan played in the OHL).starmvp wrote:That's awesome. Although niether of the games was what you would call a classic, the Thusday afternoon session in 1988 was one of the most exciting sessions in memory. Grand Rapids and Jefferson went back and forth in the first game with Jeff Saterdalen scoring very late (I think 14 seconds remaining) to tie it and Jefferson went on to win in OT, but I can't remember who scored the winner (one of the Bianchis maybe?) In the second game, Rochester John Marshall was a big favorite over Hill-Murray. JM had Jeff Kreusel in goal and a fantastic first line centered by Mike Curry, who had nearly 40 goals. Hill came in with their starting goalie having been declared academically ineligible, but the Pioneers led for most of the game. JM scored with 13 seconds remaining to tie the game and the game went to overtime before B.J. Krois scored for the Pioneers, who went on to upset Jefferson in the semis before losing to Edina in the title game.

Century handed Burnsville a similar defeat in the 3rd place game of 07. The Panthers were up by a few and Burnsville came back to send into OT. Century scored first and took thirdnipeshow18 wrote:2007 Semi Finals: Burnsville vs. Grand Rapids

I think, for me personally anyway, that day was when the Class A tournament really came of age in my mind. I just like hockey, so adding another class just means twice the hockey for me — even though I hated the idea when it first came about. But between that game and the Hermantown-Warroad tilt in the second A semi, ... followed by the aforementioned Rapids-Burnsville game to end the night, what a great day of hockey that was. Watched them all from the Xcel Center press box, which despite being so high off the ice, is the best seat in the house, because you can take in the whole sheet of ice all at once.
