state tourney

Post by hkymomx5 »

It gets tiring to hear the same old whining and complaining every year about certain teams not making it to the state tournament. It's a Minnesota State tournament not a metro tournament. It's set up so that each region sends its best two reps to compete. Burnsville, Elk River, ect. all had good teams but they were not the best in their region, obviously. I know Elk River was beat several times by Wayzata throughout the season and Burnsville was beat several times by Edina. Wayzata and Edina are good reps for their regions. As far as who plays who in the tournament's first game, it is predetermined before the season even begins. This is how it's done every year. Good luck to all the teams and better luck next year to all the metro teams that didn't make it.

Well, well, well... Do we have to go through this discussion yet another time?! The state tournament is set up so that 2 teams are represented from each region. (It is a state tournament, after all--not a metro tournament or a northern team tournament...) Some regions have a lot of good teams, others don't. At the end of the day, the cream rises to the top! (And, I say, "May the best team win!") Somebody set up the regions the way they are for a reason. If you want to change the system, you'll have to take your concerns to someone who will give you an ear--and has the power to do something--not this message "bored." (I'm sorry that your favorite teams aren't going to be in New Hope!)

As for me, I say congrats to the teams that made it! Some had an easier road than others. Those that had an easier road won't be able to hide. We will see which team is playing the best hockey when it counts. 8)

I just took a look at the D6 website and Chaska didn't even make it out of districts. I don't think a team deserves to be there if they didn't make it out of their own district.

Woodbury is not an underdog, they ahve best almost every top ten team and can beat anyone. We will see what happens, it should be fun.

If Burnsville and Chaska were as good as you say they were (season is over), they would be headed to New Hope March 20-22. Chaska can never win the big game when it counts. This goes back 3-4 years now.

If Roseau or EGF had been in the east or west regionals it is doughtful they would have made it out, heck Burnsville went 6-1 in the playoffs and is not there , very grueling, i doubt Roseau would put 3 wins together to make it against that competition. Edina will win it all.

But if Roseau was a metro team they would be able to.

Of course the metro is deeper/better. But don't rip on the other teams.
More Cow Bell: why so much hate on Roseau...? Did Aaron Ness whoop your older sons team or something? heck, Roseau beat Edina this season, why not again?

Roseau is a one line team, they will shorten the bench more then any other team. I think they will lose in the second round.

If you look at the state tournament as just having equal representation from around the state you are correct. Minnesota Hockiey is providing some window dressing to some of the good teams from around the state, but not truly identifying the best in the entire state. Maybe it will help them increase participation and #'s in some assoc struggling to compete, long term maybe a win for the kids.

If you want it to be the elite tournament that everyone "wants" to take pride in reaching and winning (heck some would just be thrilled to get the chance to play in) then something would have to change. Until then the top association tournaments (Roseau, EP, Edina, etc) give us a better indication who is the best in the state at that point in time. Unfortunately the state tournament does not do that.

Lets hope everyone has fun in these venues and enjoys the experience, as we will continue to have these same discussions for many years to come (check out the high school board)

PS> Idea: Have a process like the NCAA Basketball where the top 30 teams ranked (and any District Tournament Champs that fall out of that), trying to utilize a cleaned up version of Minnesota Hockey Rankings type power ranking, make up a true double elimination tournament at year end. Seeding them in the brackets accordingly (ie; 1 vs 30, 2 vs 29, etc). The final weekend would look very different, but you got to beat them somewhere along the way.

No easy solution or answer just a bunch of folks wishing their teams were still in the thick of stuff.

In all fairness to Ness, the gopher have been sucking it up in the last 10 or so games. So are you saying the only good player for the gophers is Ness and he is having trouble holding the team up by himself?
Good luck East Grand Forks. hope you showem the wave as you drive home with a trophy.

So because they shorten the bench, that means they can't win ?! Come on! Sounds like those kids up there skate enough to be in shape at this time of the year to handle it. It's obviously worked so far.

What does Ness have to do with the Pee Wee tournament??? Sounds like either hatred, and or jealousy. Secondly, if Roseau has such a short bench, how have they beaten Edina, Eden Prairie and Wayzata, along with another 15+ teams in the last Month and a half or so? Yup, it sounds like more jealousy! I guess time will tell. Good luck to all teams !

It is the beauty of playoff hockey. Did Burnsville or Chaska win their last game? No. Only one team can win the championship. Any team could have lost the last game on Sunday. A bad bounce, a missed check, a puck off the skate. It is called a State Tournament for a reason. I love to see how teams from across the state match up. Good or Bad. Any one of the 8 teams can win it.

One thing for sure is Roseau will be well rested as they did not even have to play 1 quality game to make it out of the Regionals. Now I am
not sure but I believe they get Owatonna that should be quite a game.

Are you sure it wasn't just because they are just that good? All of the other teams seemed to have pretty close games in that Region I think. Just a thought. =D>

More than a "Thought"

15-21-3 Virgina Blue Devils........ Roseau 12 Blue Devils 1

21-21-6 Hermantown Hawks........Roseau 8 Hawks 0

13-16-1 Thief River Falls..............Roseau 8 Thief River 1

15-16-6 Duluth East ................... Roseau 10 Duluth East 0

They did not even have to face " 1 " team with a winning record.
