Dylan Mills took a slapshot from the point in overtime (forget which one) that was deemed to have hit the crossbar, but upon looking at the replay looks like it probably hit the netting under the crossbar (thus a goal) and dropped into the blue paint of the crease. Even with super slow-mo, it was really hard to tell, but the physics of it suggested it was a goal. You can't tell that it hits the net — don't see the twine pop — but you lose sight of the puck for longer than you should if it just hit the pipe. It happened so fast that you can hardly blame the refs for not calling it a goal, but nonetheless East probably should have won, and likely gone on to wins its second straight state title.starmom wrote:I remember that the win for AV was questionable. Yep, that's pretty much what the video tape showed. A fantastic game but it was awhile before I could watch the videotape.Cali Rodent wrote:Dylan Mills took a slapshot from the point in overtime (forget which one) that was deemed to have hit the crossbar, but upon looking at the replay looks like it probably hit the netting under the crossbar (thus a goal) and dropped into the blue paint of the crease. Here's one:
1991 semifinals: East 2, Burnsville 1...Rusty Fitzgerald scores the game winner in overtime, and Burnsville complains loudly that he hit the puck into the net with a high stick. (It wasn't)

I know this game didn't go OT, but it came very close! Hastings 6-5 with under a minute left against Blaine. Hastings scored the equalizer with under a minute left. Then Welch scored on a breakaway with under two seconds left and the Raiders won 7-6. THAT was one of the better games I've seen. I did graduate from Hastings (long before this game, though!) so I may be biased. This game was tainted a bit because it was at the Ghetto Center - not St. Paul. Those two years - there was alot missing! Thank goodness the tournament went back to St. Paul!
My dad's been taking me to the tournament ever since '84 - my first game was the Saturday consolation when Roseau scored in OT to beat Burnsville 9-8. I was only 10 years old, but I remember how fast the Broten brothers and Butsy were. To a ten year old - it was unbelievable!
One more (I'm on a roll now!) that I remember was Jefferson - Minnetonka in '85 - I was so excited to watch Bemidji and this goliath guy on skates Pelewa (spelling?), but I only got to watch the first period because the Jefferson - Tonka game went 5 ot's and had to be played the next day!

Um, there might have been a Broten (Paul) on that Roseau team, but Neal, Aaron, and Butsy were all in the pros by 1984. Nice try though.
Was Kevin Gorg the Burnsville goalie that year? I know who was the next year when the Braves beat Hill Murray for the title!

1981, Edina West.adamp1914 wrote:What year did SSP beat #1 Edina when the Edina player was called offsides when they put it in at the buzzer? I know it wasn't OT, but it sure should have been. There's no way he's offsides.
We skate fine
No one over line
West would have won
In overtime
1983 was Reggie Miracle. If I remember it right, both West in '81 and Edina in '83 entered at #1.
Be kind. Rewind.

That was a crazy finish, an awesome game! That was a good Blaine team too, they won the state championship the following year (demolishing every team in their path I might add). I think Hastings went on to finish runner-up that season. Kieffer popped the OT winner against Paul Martin and Elk River the next night, then got stomped Roseau in the final. I believe that was the season Welch, Taffe and Tharp were seniors.DCwildcats wrote:I know this game didn't go OT, but it came very close! Hastings 6-5 with under a minute left against Blaine. I was at the game. Seat was right down there next to the plexi-glass boards. Puck went through the net. Rapids outshot the Hornets big-time.mnmouth wrote:The 1978 championship game - Edina East 5, Grand Rapids 4, 2OT. Re: Famous state tourney OT games
Does anyone remember who scored the winners in these games? Friend of mine and I had been trying to figure this out over the weekend...Cali Rodent wrote:A few long overtime games came to mind, and I was trying to remember who scored the eventual game-winners. Hoping for some help from the masses, and feel free to throw out some other OT memories of your own to reminisce.
1992 Tier I semifinals, Jefferson 5, Cloquet 4 (OT):
1995 AA semifinals, Moorhead 5, Rochester Mayo 4 (2OT):

The '95 Moorhead winner was Matt Cullen.Cali Rodent wrote:Does anyone remember who scored the winners in these games? I'm tempted to say Tim McDonald, but not 100%.east hockey wrote: The '95 Moorhead winner was Matt Cullen.

You looking it up will probably be more reliable than my old memory bank.

"My best memory was of Nick Checco scoring the tying goal against Cloquet in the 91-92 semi's with under a minute to play, and then Tim McDonald getting the game winner after Dutch Barrett had an amazing game in net for the Lumberjacks (although watching the webcast of the overtime Greenway win over EP while living in Chicago was pretty sweet!)."
Grindiangrad will confirm that the puck went through Edina goalie's 5 hole, hit the back of the net, and came back out through the goalie's 5 hole. And the goalie was sliding slowly through the crease, which makes it even more unbelievable that the puck made it back out. With replay, it's an easy goal call in '09.norcon wrote:I was at the game. That game had quite a bit of controversy I remember. Tonka were beating Jefferson pretty badly in the extra periods, but after the third OT they pulled the plug for the B'ville/Bemidji game. Jefferson won the next morning.

The '91 DE/B'ville semi where the East player swatted the puck out of the air with his stick and put it in the net for the win.
And was that Wally Shaver with the game-winner for Edina over Jefferson in the '82 semis? I keep thinking it was WS, but it was someone who is or was something of a celebrity later in life.
Also the AV/H-M consolation final. AV won in I think 3 OT's. It was kinda funny though cause right before the goal the PA announced that if they didn't score in this period they would settle for a tie. The audience of course gave 'em it for saying that. Oops. That was '92.
