Roch teams

A few other thoughts -

with four schools in Rochester there is obviously a lot of talent here. Canzanillo may be the best d-man in the state, if not the best player.

John Marshall has gotten off to a good start, racking up some big numbers against Winona and a good win over a solid Mankato team.

Lourdes played Red Wing (number 7 in state) with good chances to beat them in OT, and did away with Prior Lake.

Mayo beat Century.

The question is which team is best - my bet is on JM, with Lourdes a close second.

Going into the year I thought it would be Mayo out front but barely with the other 3 teams about equal. JM, so far, seems to have found a goalie which was a big question mark coming into the season so I'd put them in front as of now. They're effort against West leaves something to be desired though. West found a way to keep them bottled up in their own end a team with more offensive talent should be able to turn that into a nice win.

Mayo has a real nice tie with Roseville, a game that they really haven't been that competitive in recently. Canzanello is a great player but he nearly singlehandidly took defeat from the jaws of victory against Century the other night. Up 2 goals and a man down with less than 2 minutes remaining he gets caught deep and lets Century go down 2 on 1 and score. Then he pushes the net off with less than 20 seconds to go, it should have been a penalty shot. Flakey stuff like that keeps him, and Mayo from being dominant. Canzanello aside, Mayo seems to have a nice quality group, no superstars just good hardworking kids.

Lourdes isn't deep enough to be competitve with the other 2 yet, maybe after they get their legs they will be. Red Wing is either over rated or class A is weak I don't know which yet. If Red Wing plays like that against JM they'll get bombed. Maybe they just had a bad game though. It will be interesting to see how Lourdes does in the Christmas tournament, they stunk it up last year with what should have been a better team.

Century is young, though they have some good talent. Knoepke and Grimstad will score, but they'll have to score a lot to win, I don't think they'll have the defence to keep most teams under 4 goals a game however. I fear they developed some bad habits the past few years relying on Kangas to much and they get sloppy in their own end. They have a good test tommorrow against Faribault, that might say a lot about how good Century is.

Red Wing vs JM

Post by One Smooth Operator »

Red Wing is not overrated (they are legitimately in the top 7 of A ratings) and they will beat JM by at least three goals even in Rochester (unless Pirius or Rihkus stands on his head).

They have tied Saint Thomas one of the better teams in A. They beat both Blake and Breck, both of whom might have been overrated at the beginning of this year but are solid teams and better than JM.

JM does not have the depth or speed to keep up with the Wingers. Plus they have two goalies that are very good.

one more thing....Winona and Mankato West are not solid teams, PuckJazz. No offense to those teams or to you but they just are not. Look who they have played and what the scores have been.

Maybe you were thinking about Mankato East. They are decent.

Only time will tell. There is some good telent this year in Rochester, it is more spread out, which is good for rivalries and upsets.

Another question to you all is, Can a Rochester team Compete at the Excel if they make it this year or will they get stomped?

-Here it is-

JM- They are playing pretty good so far this year, but this could quickly change since they play RW and Century this next week. Very poor showing against a weak Mankato team last week also. If they come out of this week still undefeated then they will be the number one in Rochester for sure. Dunfee and Gorman have to step it up, they are defanitley top two team wise, along with Pirius in the net.

Mayo- I believe they are decently strong with solid first and second lines. Canzanello will manage to put the puck in the net once or twice a game, which is always a big threat. And Donehue(sp?) has been a big reason for there sucess for them so far this year. If they keep it up they are one of the best if not the best in Roch. They are playing well, but need to get ride of dumb penalties. The first line with Sacs is impressive.

Century- They looked really solid against mayo in the third period last week, but need to do that for three in a row. If Grimsted(sp?) comes back I believe they will be right back in the mix, this also depends on their goaltending situation. They have two solid lines, but defensman like Wilcox and Stevens are way out of their league, relying on talking smack will only get them in trouble or hurt. I expect them to be 500 by the Christmas tourney, only if that Sophmore in net will step up.

Lourdes- They have some solid players, but lack depth. They have had some pretty close calls playing top notch single A teams (Blake, RW), but only have wins against Owatonna and Prior Lake. I will put them last among Rochester teams until they actually prove something other than "close ones". Also team wise they lack speed, except a few individuals. They are still single A, which in my book puts them behind all AA teams when in comparison.

P.S.- BigBubba004, Mayo will not loose to Austin, Austin will not score more than 2 goals. And Century will prolly win like 6-2 over Faribault, because they are terrible year in and year out!!!

Rochester Teams

Post by One Smooth Operator »

I guess RGGSpartan aka "Mayo homie" showed me. I feel so bad that I guess I'll post something on "his" forum

1. Lourdes (best overall team in Rochester with solid two lines, lack third line right now, good goalies)
2. JM (we'll see how they do against Red Wing but I predict they will lose by at least three goals even in Rochester)
3. Mayo (lacks depth, but have good goalie)
4. Century (two solid forward lines, lack depth on d, inexperienced goalie)

I don't think Lourdes plays any of the public schools in Rochester this year but you'll be able to tell by goal differential over the course of the season where they stack up.

All of these teams have strengths and weaknesses that offset each other. Through the course of a season many things can happen and it is very difficult to determine "the best".
Let's look at this in a more positive manner.....It;s very impressive that a town the size of Rochester can field 4 competitive HS hockey teams.

Austin vs. Mayo

Post by hockey24 »

Just to give a heads up, Austin controled the scrimmiage agaisnt Mayo and beat them in Owatonna, I know, I know, scrimmiages don't mean much but it does give some insight on tonights game. It will be a close game but it is in Austin and that will give them the edage. I don't know if Mayo can take the punishment either. Austin is the stronest team when it comes to being physical but lack the high goal count that is needed. Swancutt and Arnold's lines a pretty much evenly matched which gives them depth and there D is better than Mayo's maybe best in state. Austin goalies are better and that will keep it close. Austin-3 Mayo-2

Rochester Hockey

Post by puckjazz »

You're right Hockbest. On a year to year basis if the talent in Rochester were pooled to one or even two high schools they would consistently compete at the state level in AA. As it is, because of dilution Rochester hockey is often overlooked.

That said, I believe JM is the best of the four this year, but I believe that Lourdes is not that far behind. Mayo just still hasn't figured themselves out yet - but still ahve good talent.

Sorry Century - Im not convinced yet.

see i just dont understand how you can say that about mayo. They have gone 2-0-1 and have played 3 pretty decent games. Im not trying to argue but how can you place the fate of a team on one players shoulders like everyone in this forum does. Canz is hands down the best players ive ever played with, and other would agree, but mayo has much more depth then people see. Ofcourse theres graduates from Century and JM that feel the same about their old teams but im telling you that with the depth mayo is starting to develop and not relying on canz anymore, i could easily see mayo making a trip to state and being the best rochester school at the end of the year.

I think you are right, mayo COULD be the best Rochester team, but we will just have to see. When they played Century I was impressed with what they brough back from last year. Just let stuff fall into place and we'll have to see what happens comes sections.

Austin vs Mayo

Post by hockey24 »

Last night in Austin, Mayo lost 5-2, by the end of the night Mayo didn't even want to go to the puck. I would argue that Mayo has any depth at all. Successful teams are made up of more than one or two players. Austin goalie made the difference for them. I think Mayo out shot Austin all three periods.

Go to your class? Oh that's right school is probably cancelled so we can have all of you JV kids on here talking up your Section 1 AA teams. ANd how the section is so good. I played in Section 1A and it was always horrible. Besides last year it was always Lourdes that was the only thing decent to come out of Section 1 A.

Alhockey, swatsy28 called it, it was jack in the net and he looked great. I think Peterson likes the attention and I commind him for his stand, not to many kids will go down with the ship right or wrong he's ok in my book! Look how many of you already miss calling him names. Petersons back next game, I think, and I look forward to watching him play. Between the two senior goalies for Austin I don't think theres any team out there that is that deep with goal tending talient. The whole team has depth.
