Best all time state hockey tournament player?
who has been the greatest player in the tournament? i know theres alot, but who has stuck out in our memories? from gino guyer to john mayasich? im gonna have to go with Dave spehar
Spehar does stick out the most and i have watched the last 15 years of State hockey tournaments. He may be top 3 ever but nowdays its hard to judge because of all the changes since the old Henry Boucher ( sp. ? ) days. I just love how it gets better and better each year. I also like pat white from GR and Gino Guyer Greenway but there's been better proformances from others.

I do think it's ridiculous for any player to be described as being in Mayasich's league, but I still give props to Hanowski's accomplishments. Def Spehar. . . . come on now.
spehar......mayasich played agaist people that didnt know the rules and wore catalogs for shin pads...no lie.....he wasnt that great, the talent is SO MUCH better now....mayasich would have been average/above average compared to todays players....his records don't hold much weight in my opinion, i know people think he is a god, but i just feel he was average for today, unreal for back int he days of catologs on shins...he played against staples for god sakes..they havent had a hockey team in 45 years at least.

You have to remember he had those points with 12 min run time periods. Like Maroosh (Mariucci) said, "Words are inadequate, He was a bigger, faster, stronger, backchecking Wayne Gretzky!"

I'm not going to get into any name calling but I do recommend that you get a cat scan soon cathedral boy. He was the leading scorer for two US Olympic teams. Mayasich played during that time too. It's not like he had the advantages of knowing what the game is like now that other people didn't have. He was great for his time. Greater for his time than any other player has been for his time. I can't stand the argument of "yea well he wouldn't be good against today's players so he wasn't good."
You also going to say that Gretzky wasn't a great hockey player because he didn't play against Ovechkin, Iginla, Crosby, Malkin, Pronger, etc?
Every time someone raises the argument of 'he was only good because the competition wasn't as tough,' you completely fail to realize that you're suggesting that the great player in question somehow had some sort of advantage over them aside from just simply being better.
If Ben Hanowski still holds the state scoring record 20 - 30 years from now, are you gonna say, "oh yea well that doesn't mean anything because he played against people who didnt have <insert best available equipment 30 years from now> and he didn't play against <insert best players 30 years from now>?
This argument is so weak.
