Best Teams to Never Win a State Title

Post by GopherHockeyRube »

Was just thinking when I was watching Edina get upset by Moorhead of where they would rank on a list of the best teams to Never WIN the State Championship. They might not be one of the best teams, but surely probably one of the most talented the last 2 years. Your Thoughts??

Roseau in the late 70s sent the teams with the Brotens.

Moorhead.

Warroad in 1988 was undefeated and lost to the eventual champs in the semis.

Edina won in 1982, 84, and 88...1981 (West), 1983, and 1986 were excellent teams too.

There have to be a ton of candidates for this honor. Three games in three days has tripped up a bunch of great teams. Lots of Hill-Murray squads to consider as well.
Be kind. Rewind.

It's crazy that the Roseau teams with Butsy and the Brotens never did.
The numbers they put up during, and beyond high school, were staggering.

The thing that sets this team apart is that the talent played together for such a long period of time.

It is so uncommon for such highly regarded talent to all play together for their entire high school career.

Another extremely talented team was the holy angels of 06-07 year, but their most talented players hadnt played together more than two years...

Given that Budish didn't play a game this year, I don't think this Edina team qualifies as one of the "most talented" in MN history. Take the current Edina team, and add a 6'3" 225 lb, top 15 1st round NHL draft pick (Budish pre-injury), and yes, Edina would have been one of the more talented teams in recent history. Without him, they are a top 5 team, as they were all year, but not a team with overwhelming talent. They've got two forwards going to play D-1 and a defenseman going to play at Holy Cross next year. I don't see anyone in their junior or sophomore classes as clear D-1 talents (Sit maybe I guess eventually). I'd guess that EP, DE, and Blaine will have a similar number of kids playing D-1 eventually.

If they'd had Budish this year, anything short of a state championship would be a huge disappointment. Without him, they went from heavy favorite to one of 4 or 5 strong contenders. Put another way, where would EP be without Leddy? What would Centennial have looked like without Pitlick? DE without Tardy? That's what Edina lost and that's the difference between being overwhelmingly talented and one of 5 or so teams that could win state. So, in short, I guess I don't consider this year's Edina team a failure or under achieving. I think their record of 24-5 is about to their talent-level, and I give Moorhead alot of credit for playing a great game.

Jefferson just wasn't that good this year. They played an easy schedule and got put in their place when they finally played a good team.

I think the Edina team last season was actually better than this seasons team, the competition this season just wasn't as good.

I'd give this one a vote...despite the 5-OT loss, they still won handily in the 3rd place game the next night. It was Spehar's senior year--he had 13 points in the tourney, the most in AA since Mayasich in 1951 (a couple of Cloquet players also had 13 in the tier 1 tourney in 92).

The 97 East team should probably be mentioned too. They were undefeated until the loss to Edina in the state title game.

I think you need more than 1 line to be considered one of the greatest teams of all time. I am suprised at the lack of Edina's depth at least last night!

To honor "Brad Sheldtad Guy" the 1970 Edina Team with Nyrop (RIP), Thayer, Krieger, Carlson brothers were a heavily talented team that was beat by Southwest and their hot goalie, Brad Shelstad, 1-0 in double OT on a fluke goal. Had to dig deep for this information when I saw the name pop up.

I really can't believe people on here still think that last seasons Roseau team was the best in the state. They did not have 1 impressive win on their record and did not prove anything the whole year with their ridiculously easy schedule. They were so overrated it wasn't even funny. I thought people realized that when they got the crap kicked out of them by Hill and Benilde.
