Best district support of team

Post by beaverhawk »

Just curious to know to what extent districts support their teams at tourneys.
Little Falls is only allowing a very limited percentage of their teachers (14 out of over 150) to go support the Flyers at tomorrow's game. Even though the high school in particular has been at half capacity since Wednesday morning and they will see 7 more buses of students heading out tomorrow morning. Do other districts play this game of "we still have a school to run" or do they allow their staff to help cheer on the team?

It's not a game. Schools only getting funding from the state for days they are in school. So canceling school means no state funding. If they are in school but in low capacity they get the same amount as a full day. Makes sense for a school to do. Also, every teacher that's gone, needs a substitute to cover for them, which is also more funding money.

It's all a money issue (probably). A real issue in our schools that needs to be fixed.

I know this isn't hockey, but last year when Mayo's team went to state for basketball, almost half of the teachers went. From what I heard there were only about 200 kids out of 1600 kids at school that day.

Wouldn't they be better served telling the teachers (at least high and middle) they would like them at the game since that's where the kids are? Keep some staff back to manage the empty building and send the rest. I know if there is a field trip there has to be a certain staff-student ratio......You don't need subs where there are no kids.

Agreed in a perfect world. But in one where school funding is spent that well and schools are fighting for different money, this is the reality.

When I taught we could go but we had to pay for our own sub, the district would only pay for a few to go, the coaches, band director, and couple of chaparones. Now I went but most didn't, many weren't hockey fans others didn't want to spend the money. As Watcher says school had to be open and someone has to be there.

Up here Warroad and Roseau both build into the calender days that allow them to close down the school. Each school can close down for a certain amount of days every year, so unless these schools closed due to weather then they are kind of playing a game. Warroad didnt close for our team to go to state once back in the late 90's and that was because of the amount of days missed due to weather before hand. Its hockey people, close down the school so the kids can go

The Thursday and Friday of boys state hockey have been Roseau's spring break days for over 30 years. School is off if the boys go or not. The hockey tournament is such a big event for the community when we go and there are still alot of people who go each year even if we don't, just to watch great high school hockey.
