WCCO PLEASE...COME BACK!!!
This is the worst coverage I've ever seen, same clips year after year! Yes I realize there were a few good overtime games but PLEASE find something else! We all know Henry got hurt, and Spehar was the best ever to play in the tournament, Ikola wore a hat! Yippie get a clue 45, your coverage sucks!!!

Re: WCCO PLEASE...COME BACK!!!
I agree, at least WCCO talked about the Schools that were in the Tourney and the videos were fantastic!! I just don't think they have the $$$$ to buy the rights.NeilGuf-yb wrote:This is the worst coverage I've ever seen, same clips year after year! TV Coverage
Part of the problem is that the State H.S. League wants to sell the television coverage as a complete package. Prep Bowl, Girls and Boys Hockey and the Girls and Boys Basketball Tourneys as a package deal. The league realizes that the hockey tournament is the big seller but won't sell the rights individually. If they did I think WCCO would jump back into the bidding. Hopefully next year KSTC 45 will get off their duffs and broadcast the tournament in HD as they are one of the 2 local channels (the other being channel 41) that are still broadcasting in "low def". I wish they would bring in a second play by play guy. Matvick's o.k., but I get tired of listening to him do every game.

I've said this before, and I'm serious ...
If Channel 45 doesn't want to improve the "stuff" they use, at least turn it over to some school's video or arts program and let them run with it.
Any of the top schools in the state would take that project on and knock it out of the park.
There IS great footage out there of great High School hockey events over the past 60 years. We don't have to see AV/DE for the next 6 years.
Put someone on it and let them run with it.
Please?
Its the greatest high school event in the country, and it is getting terrible effort when it comes to the local coverage. Thats wrong.
Anything wrong with sending some crews out a week ago and taping highlights from the section finals? So we can all see hwo these teams got there? Going to schools and ex-players and asking for stories and memorabilia and footage?
It's not that hard, it really isn't.
People want to be a part of it. Turn it over to volunteer groups and see what they come up with, fer chrissakes.
I can't stand re-watching this same old crap and hearing Orville Redenbacher tell us that he left the DE/AV game early. I've heard that story 8 times, and it sucks worse every time I hear it.

I also likes when they would go to the schools and do a little video of them. Players in the classroom or something that was fun to watch not the replay of the same highlights. Hey did you know Lou Nanne called the game winning goal that his son scored. I swear my that will be the first things my grandchildern say when they start to talk.

That was the best part of making it into the tournament for the student body "The Boys Are Back In Town"MNRinkRat wrote:Wcco's coverage was great. The teams used to make music videso for the tournament. I wish they would take the coverage back.
What's the deal with not showing third-place games. Would someone miss Roseanne and Friends re-runs?
I wish WCOO would take it back too!

Why so few stories in between periods? Is it a lack of budget? Or does 45 just not care that much.
Here's a quick solution:
Wednesday & Thursday intermissions: show highlights of each particular team's section final win to show how they got there, home team 1st intermission, visiting team 2nd intermission. That gives a little love to the section runner-ups, who deserve a bit of love for what they've accomplished during the year. Then again, that would make 45 have to actually dip into the budget and send a camera crew out to section finals and actually have to do something.
That allows them to only have to loop the 4 different stories they have now a few times compared to the many already.
What about looking back at tournament's past? A look back at the tourney 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 30, years ago & 40 years ago. That would add 4 more features. Of course, that would mean 45 having to actually send some intern and take the time to edit video footage and do something.
Bottom Line: 45 does it on the cheap. Understandable for the girls tournament. Not acceptable for the boys tournament.

I agree that WCCO's coverage was the best ever for the tournament.
However, remember that WCCO is not owned locally anymore. CBS owns it and there is no way they are going to preempt their own programming for a high school tournament.
But it is pathetic that Channel 45 can't do anything more imaginative than have the same tired old guys rehash the same stories. The coverge is half. A.. in football, in hockey and in basketball. They need to look at how they produce this and come up with something different next year.

Please hire a hockey guy! Did you guys know that Mayasich was good, Ikola coached at Edina, Apple Valley and Duluth East played a long game and Housley wore Cooperalls? I bet everyone on this site can think of at least 50 great stories from the past tournaments that should be told again..but when you have a staff with no clue about the history of the tournament....well, we get Spehar scoring a hat trick...ugh.

WCCO would also have a Wednesday night preview of the tournament. I miss the music videos. They also brought in the Montreal Candians play by play annoucer for the tourney. How abought the 30 minute preview of the state championship game before the game? Great stuff!
How can it go from great to average? Why is Tom Hauser the host? WCCO had Mark Rosen and RJ Fritz. WOW! WCCO made the tourney even bigger and better. Those were the days...

I attend St. Cloud State state and I know for sure that we had more footage of central minnesota hockey than 45 had of the whole state. This is quite embarrasing in my mind. The music, graphics, few talent members, and the amount of packaged stories need to be changed next year! Probably a big reason why everyone is going to the game instead of watching it on T.V.
It really wouldn't take that much to go and interview a bunch of teams before the tournament... Why not make that "tournament dinner," a media night as well.
Would it be a Minnesota hockey sin to bring in Don Cherry??
