Tonka outshot Jefferson for the game, 50-27.Nostalgic Nerd wrote:One more (I'm on a roll now!) that I remember was Jefferson - Minnetonka in '85 - I was so excited to watch Bemidji and this goliath guy on skates Pelewa (spelling?), but I only got to watch the first period because the Jefferson - Tonka game went 5 ot's and had to be played the next day!
That game had quite a bit of controversy I remember. Tonka were beating Jefferson pretty badly in the extra periods, but after the third OT they pulled the plug for the B'ville/Bemidji game. Jefferson won the next morning.

Benilde-Hermanton
Hell of a hockey game in 99'. Benilde had the Riddle Brothers, Andrew Alberts, The Schuman's, Irwin, Valko, and a host of other players. One of the best teams I've seen in fact. Hermantown also had a stud who played at Michigan Tech who's name is escaping me. Anyway, fantastic game.
Another one that was pretty good was Warroad and Orono in 04', very entertaining.

How about Greenway in 01
2001 Greenway vs. Eden Prairie
Classic David vs. Goliath, northern vs. metro matchup. I can still remember the entire place erupting (except the corner of EP fans) after Guyer, IIRC, tied it up with a few seconds left. Everyone not from Eden Prairie was a Ranger that night.
Actually, if we're talking overtime...all 3 of Greenway's games at state in 2001 went to overtime. They eventually beat Hastings to take home 3rd.
A shame they lost in the semis. It would've been a great story to see them win it all. It was one of the few times that I can remember there being a buzz in the upper deck when some of players were spotted walking around (Guyer and Sertich).

Here's one to chew on: There were 16 players involved in that East-Valley game that played at least one game of Division I NCAA hockey — and there could have been as many as 19. Chris Locker is not on that list, he committed to Wisconsin but from what I recall grades derailed his D-I career; East's Patrick Finnegan played in the OHL instead; and Apple Valley's Nick Gretz elected to play baseball instead.east hockey wrote:Yep, that's pretty much what the video tape showed. Even with super slow-mo, it was really hard to tell, but the physics of it suggested it was a goal. You can't tell that it hits the net — don't see the twine pop — but you lose sight of the puck for longer than you should if it just hit the pipe. It happened so fast that you can hardly blame the refs for not calling it a goal, but nonetheless East probably should have won, and likely gone on to wins its second straight state title.starmom wrote: I remember that the win for AV was questionable. Anyone else remember this?
Here's one:
1991 semifinals: East 2, Burnsville 1...Rusty Fitzgerald scores the game winner in overtime, and Burnsville complains loudly that he hit the puck into the net with a high stick. (It wasn't)

In '87, the run SSP had in the consolations bracket. First they beat Edina in the semis after being down 4-2, winning 6-4. Then they upset Hill I believe 4-3 in OT. That coach went on to head the Hastings success during the late '90s/early '00s.
Yeah, that was Russ Welch. Wonder where he's at now.

I'm sure I can't name them all for Apple Valley' Goehring, Westrum and DeFauw for sure.Cali Rodent wrote:Here's one to chew on: There were 16 players involved in that East-Valley game that played at least one game of Division I NCAA hockey — and there could have been as many as 19. For East I have twelve; Spehar, both Coole's, Mills, Matthias, both Suihkonens, Kolquist, Wheeler, Toftey, Nick Anderson, Pat Gunderson.
Would have been nice to see Chris Locker make it. One helluva player, in some respects better than Spehar.

DUDE!.......anyway i can get a copy of this in some way!Cali Rodent wrote:I have a tape of this game (well, two tapes actually LOL!). I was a senior at South St. Paul in 1996, and SSP played Edina in the first semifinal game, and I and my two buddies who went to that game simply stayed in our same seats for the nightcap (East-AV), pretty much smack in the middle of the Apple Valley student section (Somewhere out there I still have my old SSP baseball cap, with an AV Eagle sticker stuck over the front of it). I had set the tape at my parents' house to tape the SSP game and it simply kept running after that. During one of the overtime intermissions of the East-AV game, when it became obvious that game would be one worth having on tape, I remember scurrying downstairs at the old Civic Center to find a phone and call my parents to get another tape ready!! This, of course, before everyone you know had a cell phone in their pocket.starmvp wrote:That would be great!SEMNHOCKEYFAN wrote: Dang thats lame! FSN north should get copies of some games n do like they do with twins classic but instead have it be high school hockey classics.....that would be awsome!
I've watched it a couple times over the years, always a fun experience. But it's just so damn long....

What I remember most was all the whiney Burnsville fans that by the end of it were just wanting someone to score, even us. They were pissed and the Burnsville game didn't start until after 11, if I remember correctly.Nostalgic Nerd wrote:Tonka outshot Jefferson for the game, 50-27.Nostalgic Nerd wrote:One more (I'm on a roll now!) that I remember was Jefferson - Minnetonka in '85 - I was so excited to watch Bemidji and this goliath guy on skates Pelewa (spelling?), but I only got to watch the first period because the Jefferson - Tonka game went 5 ot's and had to be played the next day!
