Cloquet, Duluth, PHM, and Grand Rapids beat up all year on each other and, yes, did beat some of the other top teams in the state. This includes both those in the tourney and those who didn't make it. Put my daughters team in Section 4AA and yes I would still feel the same!

Did the best team from each section win and advance?

If not take care of business in your own section before you complain about section alignment!

Would you want to advance because you were the second best team in your section?

Just win your section and you will advance.
Spoken like the dad of a daughter who's team wasn't in 4AA this year :)

I don't think any changes will increase attendance greatly, but as a fan of the game, the games that are viewed by the most people (TV), are the semi's and finals of the state tourney.

Although I don't have a kid at either school, I for one would've liked to see the Roseville vs Stillwater game on TV in the semi's or finals this year. All other things aside it's a shame that we couldn't have. Extra bonus for the Roseville fans who are still crying foul about the game winning goal, if that game was at state we would've had instant replay to know for sure.

Great opinions NMN.

You might get your wish. Just heard from a reliable source that Roseville and WBL were moving to Sec 7. Also heard Stillwater was moving to Sec 1. While Woodbury and Forest lake are moving to Sec 4. Centennial is moving to Sec 8.

Good luck to all. About time!

Melvin, What are you smoking today. Logistics will tell you this situation is almost impossible.

This looks like something Hill Murray would like. get rid of Stillwater, Whitebear and Roseville. Kind of sounds like a Roseau Marketing program.

Personally. Lump all the private schools together into one section and let
them compete against each other. This would even the playing field.

Lowest Cost Tuition Wins.

Also watch for a mass exodus at Blake. Breck will win that section next three years. All the Blake studs are gone. With this economy even the well off have to consider the price of education at these elite schools.

Don't have to call names. It's what I heard. Also 1 northern team would also be placed in sec 4.

As far as travel What's the difference between Forest lake and Roseville (10 miles?). :?

We'll see. :D

Actual if you look at the stats Blake they lost 7 seniors and 40% of goals but it is a very very strong young returning team and has some top incoming players - they may have some of the best players to have ever played at Blake in the underclass players:

One thing I hope they did with realignment is keep AA sections to just eight teams. If one team opts up, they need to drop the smallest team into A. It doesn't make sense for some AA sections to have nine teams and some A sections to have six or seven.

High school league board OKs new competitive sections
By Tim Leighton
tleighton@pioneerpress.com
Posted: 03/13/2009 12:01:00 AM CDT

Competitive sectional assignments for the 2009-11 school years were approved Friday morning by the Minnesota State High School League's board of directors, but not until most were satisfied after lengthy debate regarding the ability of member schools to opt down a class if they qualify.

After analyzing maps with proposed sectional placements for all of the league's sponsored activities, the directors gave it the OK. To prevent allegations of bias when it came to competitive placements, the maps did not identify schools by name; each school was shown as a dot in a color representing its geographical section.

Sectional placements won't be available to the public until Wednesday, when assignments are finalized.

At the special board meeting, which took place at the Xcel Energy Center, an already-in-place policy that allows schools to opt down a classification when that school has more than 50 percent of its enrollment on free and reduced lunch was discussed at length.

"The schools that can opt down when free and reduced lunch are more than 50 percent would force other schools up in a competitive placement,'' said board president Mark Kuisle, the activities director at Rochester Century. "With our motion today, we are not forcing those schools up a classification. That helped clarify a concern on the part of the AD's advisory committee.''

The board also revisited a policy that was in place two years ago that allowed a member school to opt down a second time

if its enrollment figure dropped significantly in the wake of declining enrollment. The board voted not to allow an additional opt-down option.
Board vice president Jeff Whisler, the activities director at Mahtomedi, was the only board member to vote against the double opt-down. He spoke on behalf of his constituents, including the St. Paul public schools.

Remainder = Class A
Girls:

Activity Classifications
The MSHSL receives information from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) detailing the reported school enrollments and Free/Reduced (F/R) lunch counts by grade level. Per the Board of Director's policy, enrollments for determining Administrative Regions and Section Placements are computed as follows:

a school's actual 9-12 enrollment will be used
40% of the reported F/R lunch counts in grades 9-12 will be subtracted from the school's actual 9-12 enrollment
the result will determine the schools "actual enrollment" for classification purposes

This process will be followed in all calculations for placements during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years.

ACTIVITY CLASSIFICATION ENROLLMENT

Hockey, Girls

A 1434-1

Enrollment Adjustments:
When reviewing your school’s enrollment on our web site you are reminded that your enrollment for a particular activity may differ due to one or more of the following enrollment adjustments:
Cooperative sponsorship between two or more schools.
Cooperative sponsorship between two or more Class A schools in lifelong activities where one of the school’s enrollment is fewer than 150 students.
Cooperative sponsorship between two or more Class A schools in non-lifelong activities.

* Enrollment Disclaimer for Boys/Girls Basketball and Football
As you review the classification enrollment ranges for Boys/Girls Basketball and Football please be aware that these ranges will be affected by schools opting up. Once all opt up forms have been submitted to the League, we will adjust the enrollment ranges for these activities as required.

I what like to take these stats seriously but I can't. Lets take a look at their schedule. I believe my 12UA daughter could of got 40 points with this schedule:

Move to AA Independant and play the tough teams. Then show me your statistics.

Minneapolis Novas (1)
Holy Family (2)
St Paul Blades (1)
New Ulm (1)
Hibbing (1)

I like Tonka into section 6AA change, will make for some great sectional play and add to the rival mix well. Although the Edina vs Tonke match up will be going away.

Didn't see any other big changes to the west metro. Looks like Roseville, Stillwater, Hill is still intact as well.

I see they have CHanhassen listed as Class: A Section: 2

I did not think they were having a hockey team other than Co-op w Chaska

Here is a summary of the changes that affect Class AA (from what I can tell):

Bloomington Kennedy from 3AA to 2AA
Minnetonka from 2AA to 6AA
Holy Family/Waconia added to 2AA
Henry Sibley from 4A to 3AA
Elk River from 8AA to 7AA
Roseau from 8A to 8AA

Edited to remove reference to Rogers - they remain in 5A

6AA was already one of the tougher sections with Hopkins, Maple Grove and Benilde (second toughest behind 4AA if you go by average KRACH rating). Now they move one of the top teams from 2AA to make room for Bloomington Kennedy (the #9 seed from 3AA) and Holy Family/Waconia? I suppose they had to move Kennedy from 3AA to 2AA to make room for Henry Sibley who moved up from class A. Still seems a little unfair to switch out a Minnetonka for Holy Family... Congrats to Edina on making it to state for the next 2 years

Only other moves I saw was Elk River from 8AA to 7AA to make room for Roseau in 8AA.

Maybe they should adjust the cutoff number so some of the smaller AA schools could qualify for A and not have 6-7 team sections in A and 9 team sections in AA. Just a thought.

This would make sense if having an equal number of teams in each section was the main goal. For 2009-10 you have 128 teams total, and if you divided 128 by 16 sections you would have 8 teams in each section for each class. This would mean re-drawing the enrollment cut-off line so that there would be 64 teams in each, which would result in 7 of the current class AA teams moving to Class A (if you exempted the smaller schools that opted to move up).

The downside of this approach is that it would require even more travel for some teams.

Section 8AA will finally get some upnorth repreresention for the section. Elk River had a good ride here. Now it's our turn. I like to congratulate Roseau on a great marketing move. Pretend their moving to better competion to get to state. because of some of my Warroad ties we know this Roseau move was Bull.

This Section will always have the luxury of kicking out the southern most team based on the rules.

Now, we need to have Warroad step up to AA which will knock out Northwright County. Which will always gaurantee a upnorth team to the state tournament.

How do you think 7AA likes Elk River in their section. Grand Rapids will probably still be the Section Favorite over their.
Who says there is no politics in section posturing.

Section 8AA will finally get some upnorth represention
