Section 6 tryouts are a joke...the tryouts are held in Breck meaning that many of the Section 6A players have to travel more than 2+hours to get to the tryout, so they don't come. Why can't the Section 6AA teams travel a little too. Pick a different tryout site

Looks like not bad for 6AA but a hike for 6A to Breck:

6AA Teams
Hopkins
Maple Grove
Benilde-St. Margaret's
Buffalo
Robbinsdale Armstrong
North Metro
Rogers
Wayzata
Robbinsdale Cooper
6A Teams
Morris/Benson Area
Fergus Falls
Alexandria
Detroit Lakes
Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek

So like everything on these boards there is an opportunity comment and an opportunity for action. I did a little investigating as to why this is here and how the Phase tryouts are set up.......interesting fact the option to be GM and run/organize the tryout is given to all coaches in the Section.

So who are the coaches of Section 6 offering to do it and involved/helping? Are the 6A coaches involved in process and getting nomination in for consideration? If people would like to have it further north or west they probably need to put pressure on their HS coach to take it over or be involved or voice concern. I don't know who is runnig Section 6 but this look to be a lot of work right at the tail end of a HS season - there is a lot of talent in Section 6 just looking at the teams involved.

Section 4 this year is being run by the Minneapolis Novas Coach - he has been outstanding, invitiation letters and then e-mails way ahead last years, personal calls to congratulate players for selection to Phase 4.....he is very present at tryouts and has done a great job in the second year of this process.

It is interesting when you share this model to other areas of the US how impressed people are with the level of the MN Phase process where 360 kids can tryout in a birth year to decide NDP for U16 and U17. In some areas it 1-2 hours with 90 kids on the ice. You don't pull off a 6 week tryout without a lot of work by a lot of coaches and evaluators. So like everything in hockey you can complain or you can engage and try to improve the process.

Every coach knows about this stuff, they are contacted about it by the GM as a reminder to each coach to nominate as many players or even all the players that fit into that age group. It is up to the HS coach to make sure to get all his players nominated. If he didn't, call him on it, also I called the section 6 gentlemen in charge and only 2 single A players came down for the try-out.
One from Fergus Falls
One from Alexandria
Both very good players.
So i have been told.

Also, even if the players are nominated doesn't mean they are coming down to try out.

Sect 6 for 16s there were a couple girls from Morris Benson, Detroit Lakes, and 1 from Fergus. Agree it is inconvenient for the travel. Would really like to hear 1 way or another as were supposed to know within 1 week. As there is a travel distance and hotel neccessary for 6a people we need to make arrangements if any 6a did make it.

Different sections for this have always been run very differently.

Looks like if you are wanting to set up travel plans that you could call the section 6 guy and see if he will share the Phase II participants for section 6 since they likely will not post until all sections are ready on MN hockey. Too bad that families could not be informed via email when each section is ready as some do.

I really don't think unless you have lived or live outside of the metro that much thought is given to families that live hours away and all that goes with making arrangements to attend these types of things from time off work or school, time off away from other spring activities, hotel arrangments, etc.... We live outside of the metro and have been pretty much told that by others. This is simply an observation, not good or bad.... just is.

Section 2 started their tryouts last night. Only 20 skaters and 2 goalies were there. This and the fact that of the 20 skaters I bet there were at least 10-11 defense made it interesting. They will have an interesting team at the festival since they said they will take the 18 best skaters regardless of position.

Was this at the U16 or U17 level?

The Sec 4 group was told that some not picked in the top 20 for Sec 4 U16 or U17 Team may be assigned to other Section Festival Teams if short.

It was at the U17 level. I could be wrong but I don't think there will be any assignments to or from this Section probably since the tryouts are so late and most, if not all, of the other teams have already been picked. Last year this Section had some outstanding depth at forward and D but some of the good forwards from last year are now playing D (2 girls that made Phase 4 at forward last year are now playing D) so there are too many D and not enough forwards.

I am guessing the two Sec 2 NDP F to D players are Dani Williams who switched mostly to D with the Thoroughbreds this year and Rachel Ramsey of Minnetonka HS who moved to D during the HS season. Ramsey was a U15 and U16 NDP pick at F and Williams was a U16 F NDP pick.

Would be interesting to try and get a sense how many tried out in each Section at U16 & U17 the idea was to get 360 players to try out at both U16 and U17 - did any Section max out at 36 skaters and 4 G?:

U16/U17
Sec 1 - ?F, ?G/?F, ?G
Sec 2 - ?F, ?G / 10 F, 10 D 2G
Sec 3 - ?F, ?G/?F, ?D, ?G
Sec 4 - 34 F, 3G/ 22 F, 8 D, 4G
Sec 5 - ?F, ?G/?F, ?G
Sec 6 - ?F, ?G/?F, ?G
Sec 7 - ?F, ?G/?F, ?G
Sec 8 - ?F, ?G/?F, ?G

SECTION 5 U-17 HAD 8 GOALIES. My daughter saw very limited time for scrimmatges. In fact the day I was there she did not get anytime during the scrimmages. I think it is hard to evaluate talent when they don't have much time on the ice.

Section 3 U16 had 5-6 defense, 2 goalies, and 11-12 forwards. They all made the team. We just recieved an email stating there will be NO practices before the "Spring Festival". Looks like they want the girls playing their best. Cost $125 - That is about $41 a game ouch.

Heard from a friend that the section 6 17's aren't either and for some of them this will be their Junior Fest try-out, too. Too bad the teams that practice together should certainly play better together and players then are able to better demonstrate their skills.

Hope all the girls participating have a good time, make some new friends and/or renew some old friendships!

So if no practice will there be refunds to the girls? is it fair that some get 4.5 more hours of ice time than the others?
and won't it be harder for some of the girls to play togather with limited practice.
