Six Rochester boys high school hockey players have been selected to participate in the 2009 Ted Brill Great 8 All-Star Festival at Wakota Arena in South St. Paul.
Four seniors from Rochester Mayo and two from Section 1A champion Rochester Lourdes were selected to compete for the Section 1A/1AA team.
From Lourdes, defenseman Pete Spratte and forward Tyler Voigt were named to the Section 1 team. Mayo will be represented by goalie Jordan Yaggy, forwards Tom Alexander and Alex Whitney and defenseman Rick Weber.
Spratte, Voigt, Yaggy, Alexander and Whitney were also named to the Associated Press honorable mention all-state team this week.
The Great 8 Festival is scheduled for April 3-5 and it matches all-star teams from the state's eight high school sections in a tournament format. Section 1 faces Section 3 in the first round.
The tournament is organized by the state High School Hockey Coaches Association, and is sanctioned by USA Hockey.
Tickets, available at the door, are $9 for a day pass or $20 for a three-day pass.
This was in the Rochester Post Bulletin.

Roster size
Why not 20 players on Roster...
Name 25..
In case someone gets injury.. College teams find it hard to play 3 games in 3 days with 20 man rosters. I would think each section could field a 20 man roster that would be able to play hard 3 days and play 20 minute periods... So that everyone got a lot of great ice time against all the other sections best seniors.
If that were the case Cole Peterson, George Noesen and Taylor Funk could all be on the team....
I think they are all great prospects...
I just wonder if it is fun to play just 3 lines for 3 days straight and try to bring great energy on Sunday so someone will notice you...
More guys means more opportunities for our kids to get a good look by the scouts.. Most colleges pros and juniors do not very often play three games in three days with only a three line group...
I think initially they had four lines... I think make it 20 minute periods and give another line a shot at turning some heads for each section.. I think the games on Sunday would be even better.

Pretty sure most of these kids are used to playing 25 - 30 minutes per game so this should be easy for them to go hard each shift for three days. I understand your thoughts on giving an extra 3 kids an oportunity to show there stuff, but they had 25 -30 games throughout the season to do that. Are there very deserving kids left out of this.....absolutely in my opinion..but these teams are voted on by the coaches in each Section so who are we to disagree.Sioux Fan wrote:Why not 20 players on Roster...

Re: Roster size
If all named Section 6 A and AA players show up, this should be a Section 6A and AA win, if not, who knows, but it should be fairly competitive.Sioux Fan wrote:Why not 20 players on Roster...

I think that if you expand the minutes to 20 then you can get more exposure for more kids. that is all I was saying I am glad that Section 1 is a strong group and will do great. Good Luck.. I do like those other kids quite a bit and I want to make sure they are noted....
Good Luck to everyone participating I believe they initially had 20 when they started this..Also in Advanced Program we have 20 man rosters.
I thought this was about exposure for our best players I hate to leave guys out when by adding a little more time and giving everyone a chance to be at optimum energy you would have a little more opportunity for a few more kids about 24 if I do the math..
I never know what kid is going to take that opportunity and do something special with it.
I wonder if the energy level would be higher on Sunday if they had 4 lines I bet it would. IE WCHA playoffs play in games...
teams get tired in game 3... they should. 3 game weekend in juniors are a grind. That is the truth I would want the kids to be their best every shift.
Lots of energy that is what I like..Davey you should know that.. Sometimes guys that play lots of minutes get used to saving it and picking their spots. I like it when everyone is a pretty strong player and we can bring it the whole game long...
I can never make you happy Dave. That is OK with me.. Have a great day.

I agree with you davey no point of having 4 lines in an exposure tourney. But I figured that the whole Lourdes line would've made it (funk,Voigt, peterson). They led there team to state, put big numbers up against good competition, I mean Peterson scored 3 gwg's in 6 post season games (sections and state). I feel that he is still more deserving then a few people on the roster.
I also was surprised that only one person from that line made the team. All 3 are deserving. Another kid that had a great year was Devon Grossell from WinonaGophs_Fan 12345 wrote:I agree with you davey no point of having 4 lines in an exposure tourney. They deserve it but by coaches vote they do not get it..
I think with 20 minute periods everyone would get enough ice time opportunity to show their ability.
I do not know but North Dakota was a stronger team when they rolled all four lines than when they had to play just three due to injury or whatever.
I think energy and intensity would be better. Obviously I feel there would be no let up in energy if these three or four forwards got to play.
I think we all agree on that.
Have a great day... I think 18 minutes more of watching these good kids play would be OK with me.
You cannot look back and maybe it is too many kids for the scouts to see them all.
There is probably great reasons for the structure that is currently used.
Good luck to all the participants have a fun.

I for one find it very interesting that ZERO Century players made the cut, not even Tyler Anderson, but yet 4 players from Mayo made it.
MMmmmm, I wonder if it has anything to do with Whitney counting the votes himself, afterall he's the number one big kahuna.
What a farce!
Tyler Anderson deserves to play on that LONG BEFORE Whitney's kid.
DOWN WITH MAYO AND OUT WITH WHITNEY!!!
