Shattuck players try to qualify for the national festival through the state/districts they live in, that's why there are just the two. Clark is from Eden Prairie, and LaFontaine grew up in Montana, but lives in Faribault now as his father coaches one of the teams at Shattuck.Jbone wrote:With Section 1 having the opportunity to gain kids from Shattuck, I'm wondering where the rest of those guys are. Only having one seems like they don't have the cream of the crop from the southern areas.
Section 1 Advance 17's
Yes it is too bad that not as many 17 year birth days from our section are not in the Elite League as in other sections.
Again last year we won with primarily kids that were in Elite II against a lot of guys in Section 6 that were in Elite league...
Strange but true. Our goaltenders and skaters did a great job I hope these kids can do that and have as much fun and go on to the 52's and possible the national event.
I am sure that being organized and having a simple knowledge of what we want to do as a team is helpful. But what should we do make sure we do not pick the best kids at camp just because they played Elite II.
Should that DQ them. I think your talk is just to irrate an irrated guy.
It is working.

More than one third of this years team did not play Elite II. Not as many as last year as we had two Elite players and one shattuck players and the rest were pretty much Elite II.
Last year the non-elite II guys were Alexander Dwyer Grossel Putrha Montgomery Lapic and Adams were all not elite II players...
this year the non Elite guys are LaFontaine, Clark, Larson, Dooley, Heimer,
Vesel, Snorek, Pirkl, Weber.
I bet the other sections will be comparable. I would say the play of our goaltenders won the games last year.. They were both Elite II kids.
Bruggeman and Arentz. Heck Bruggeman was our Alternate that how dumb I am.
It was a lot of fun thanks for reminding me about it.

Oh I thought of one other thing a lot of our kids play in the Advance 15's dist 4 too... So most all of em know or can figure out our simple systems.
Fact is we tell em to go after em and play an aggressive style...
I think they have fun with it and I sure enjoy watching them get after it.

Tim Kuzniar was another very good Defensemen in our group I am not sure about Mr. Hockey but he should have been in my previous post he did a good job. Sorry for not mentioning him in the top dman as he clearly was. As far as Sam Olson he is a gamer and will play as strong game for us. I am sure of it.

Lakeville North kids that looked good
Tim Kuzniar was probably the best
Ben Counters and Tyler Goss were in the final session and he played well
Others that did fine were
Jack Pahl
Derek Wypyszynski
Nick Johnson
Gordon Kappers
In the past we have had a lot of North kids do great for us..
This is the first year in a long time we do not have one.

Agreed. Several kids from the 16 7a/aa team last year did not make it this year. How does this work especially kids who advanced again or should have. Theres no point to selects besides getting ice time and having fun, but they ruin it for kids. These select coaches think there hockey gurus and there probably in it for there kids or something, i feel bad for the ones who are in it because they love the game not sure but im assuming the majority of the time thats not the case. And in a try-out arent the best players supposed to fill the spot or is it the name that counts????????????????JUGlover wrote:advanced 16's and 17's are a joke Matt Ray did not even make the team. last i checked he qualified for the national camp for the past two years. ...dont even say that it is based on the actual tryout beacuse i know it cant be.
Everyone has bias. I like to win.. I did not see any North kids that were going to help us beat Section 7 on Friday night other years the North kids have been key guys..
Matt Arentz was awesome for us last spring I hope all those boys get after it and show me I screwed up next season for North in the Sectionals I will be watching closely. I had the Skeens boy do a good job this Fall so I have no bias. I do think that the Lake Conference does not make u better than the Big Nine or Missota or Lourdes guys. We go by the individual's performance in the tryouts not where they are from. Any time you do tryouts there are oversights and errors. Any two coaches see things differently that I have worked with. I hope the kids take the disappointment of not making it and are determined to work hard and not let it happen again.

I remember we took a kid from the Shattuck midget team one year over a couple of Prep team guys and he did great for us..
Made the 52's and the national event in St. Cloud and plays great for Minnesota State Mankato His name is Harrison and I think he had two short handed goals against the Sioux or gophers this year or last year cannot remember. So where you were rated on your team does not mean that is how you play. Every day is a new day do not let anyone put you in a slot boys.

They did not stick out to any of the staff we had around 60 kids first two days and neither made the final day so it was really hard to say.
I think the Grubb boy caught my eye needs to work on skating but if he works hard he can be a good player.
I told all the guys that they need to make sure they become a guy that is clearly in the top 5 if they want to move on and everyone has work to do.
it is up to the players to work on thier individual skills stickhandling skating
shooting so that they can come out in a tryout and demonstrate that clearly they are the guys that the coaches want on thier team..
It is not the coaches job to critique the reason they are not making things happen.. I look for guys that make plays posess the puck and finish off offensive plays and play great defense communicate with the other guys and have confidence in their game.

I realize you have a difficult job to do and very little time to do it, but for the price of admission at least tell everyone upfront that 2/3 of them will be evaluated for less than 3 hours and then be cut. Like with any tryout there are bound to be disappointed kids, I'm just concerned that the whole thing looks to be nothing more than a fundraiser. Your familiarity with most of the players selected further complicates things. As for advising those that didn't make the cut to work harder, good idea but isn't this there last chance? The team appears to be a strong one and I hope they do well, but was it really necessary to bring in 45 kids to fill 4 spots? Seems you could narrow the number of applicants if most of the team had already been chosen. 60 kids times $70 is a bunch of money for about 3 hours of ice.
No way this is their last chance it is not that important it is fun and if you get to play on it is great but really each of these kids if they decide to work on their strength skills and skating they can make great strides to being better players if that is what they truly want to do they can get better if they really want to. People will notice if they truly get their game to another level. You are never done until you quit striving. But if we are talking about kids that are not working on there game why are we wasting your time and mine. If they are working they will feel the improvement and get better. Why do they have juniors and camps and weight rooms and driveways and nets? It is to get better so you can clearly be the best kid so you can move on.
We never know how many are coming and I think the sessions were good and the pace was excellent. This was one of the largest turnouts ever.
I do not know how we eliminate kids that really want to do this.
As far as the money we are an all volunteer staff and do not have anything to do about the money. We are to make sure the tryouts are fair and the kids get evaluated and a fair chance to make it.
I think we got a good look at all of them and watched each individually together as coaches before we made the decision to make the cuts.
No one forced anyone to come to tryouts obviously some very good players did not tryout.
To be in a top 6 defense or top 12 forward or even more difficult a top 2 goaltender is very difficult for these kids.
Obviously we feel we got it right but always their are differences of opinion even among the staff.
We do our best and feel bad if we made a mistake but it is a tough deal to work with 60 kids in 3 tryout sessions....This is why in the fall we have a 16 hour camp because I do not want a deserving player to miss out and I do not know all these kids.
I get krap for that too as they think it is too long of a tryout process.
I am fair as are all the other coaches on our staff.
Again it is up to the players to turn the heads and make the team and in this process you want to be the best on the team and move on to better things and I hope several of our guys do.
I will miss doing this as I am no longer going to be involved in this or Elite II.

actually it was 3 shorties against the sioux. but one would be an empty netter. other two were pure hard work goals.Sioux Fan wrote:I remember we took a kid from the Shattuck midget team one year over a couple of Prep team guys and he did great for us..
