Neal Broten= best Minnesota born hockey player ever!
The Roseau native was voted the best all time
Roseau's 1959 team was the runner up best all time team
Roseau is hockeytown USA in my opinion

Only player to win a College National Championship, Stanley Cup, and Olympic Gold Medal..... Missing a Minnesota High School State Championship tho, damn Edina..DubCHAGuy wrote:I'd say Housley too! Can't argue with Broten's resume though, Hobey, Gold Medal, Stanley Cup.

Was the first player to win the Hobey Baker as well

housley hands down.... second most points in nhl for american born player (just got passed by madono last year) and housley did it as a defensmen, and of course broten has better stats than housley in college thats because housley went strait to the pros from high school. And housley played in 2 or 3 state tourneys in high school.

This is a real tough one, but I think people here have it narrowed down to the two players most deserving. Broten epitomizes the absolute best that Minnesota hockey has to offer, from high school star to Minnesota Gophers/Hobey Baker award winner to USA Olympic Gold Medal Championship to Minnesota North Stars and a great NHL career. How can anyone top that?
But in terms of overall skill, I have to go with Housley. For anyone to go straight from Minnesota high school to the NHL, and excel for all those years, holding the scoring record as a defenseman until Modano just passed him late in his career as a forward, that's just incredible. It would have been real interesting if Housley had gone the usual route, from high school to college to the Olympics and then to the NHL, but to make that jump straight from high school to the NHL and do so great for so many years, well it may not happen ever again in our lifetime...
Either way, you can't go wrong with either of these two, they were both tremendous.

Excellent point but remember that one player cannot win championships. Housley's "he's never won" situation is more about him not being in the right place at the right time.ACTUALFORMERPLAYER wrote:The thing I don't like about Housley is his resume says "he never won" way more than it says he won. No Stanley Cup, No Gold Medal, No Norris trophy.....

Well Broten must have been in the right place at the right time everywehere, except for in HS because he won everything but the State title....(one line can't do everything)MNHockeyFan wrote:Excellent point but remember that one player cannot win championships. I don't think there has ever been a mn. high school player that has went straight to the NHL, except for Housley. If you think about it, that is unreal!! Look at all the Mr. Hockey's and none of them came close to being ready for the NHL. When Broten was winning the NCAA Housley was already in the NHL. Housley was a pro and could not play in the Olympic's until the late 90's. As great as Broten was, it has to be Housley

Do you know any other defensemen that went right from a Minnesota high school to the NHL? Any others (any position) that made the NHL All Rookie team their first year, and go on to play in 7 NHL All Star games after that? (Broten played in 2). 1232 points in their NHL career? (Broten had 923, and he played forward).dakota12 wrote:Housley, would question whether he was even the best defenseman ever?
As I said, you can't go wrong with either of these two, they were both great. But my vote still goes to Housley.
