Upper Midwest Elite Girls High School League Season II 2009

Post by joehockey »

Looks like Season II of this League is gearing up and some invites off of the Phase Tryouts have gone out. This was great hockey last fall and looks like they are working to make it even better in year II. Here is the website but it has not been updated from last year http://www.girlselitehockey.com

April 30, 2009
........... Modeled after the Boy’s version, this is a Fall developmental league where the top girls hockey players in the upper Midwest can play and practice with elite players of similar ability. The program is a non-profit, 501(c)3 venture.
Bauer Hockey has agreed to a Corporate Sponsorship with the league, and the Minnesota Whitecaps Professional team will partner in the endeavor. Teams will also be coached by Minnesota Whitecaps players.
The 2009 league will be made up of 4 total teams (3 Upper Midwest HS Elite teams and Shattuck St. Mary’s School). Each UMHSEL team will have a total of 18 skaters and 2 goalies on the roster. Eligible players are current High School age and will be entering 10-12th grade in the Fall of 2009.
The league will run four consecutive weekends from September 26 through October 18. Each weekend will have one game on Saturday evening, and two games on Sunday. There will be practices on Wednesday evenings. On the fifth weekend (Oct 23-25) the league will send two all star teams to represent the league in the UMHSEL Bauer NIT tournament at New Hope Ice Arena.
Player fee for 2009 is $250 (5 Practices + 12 League Games)
To register follow these simple steps by no later than May 22....

Regards,
Upper Midwest High School Elite League Staff
Eric Johnson – Director
Winny Brodt – Coordinator
Chris Peterson – Coordinator

It is too bad for the seniors that were too old to try out.

I can think of a number of '91s who were in the League as Jrs last fall that will likely be invited back this fall.....McDonald Irondale, Schulzien Blaine, Gleisen Edina.....

So have all the automatic invites gone out? Have all the invites to try out also gone out?

Good question not sure ? I know it was great hockey and those who played loved it and some who passed will likely want in this year. Also there will still be top players that for fall sports, travel time/distance, work or just some time off will not play in the League - it was a big commitment and a grueling schedule ahead of the HS season.

Here is a couple of ways to look at this but may be all wrong - total 60 players + ? Alternates (they played a lot last year not sure who all the alternates were by name - I only remember Emily Snodgrass and Sparky Therien but there were others....they may get full spots?) -

Here are the Jrs and lower you have returning and a look at NDP players that weren't in the League Last year minus SSM and Thoroughbreds who wouldn't be on these teams - these are only assumptions and list is below may have some errors:

G- 3 possible returning - 3 or more open (NDP not named yet?)
D - 8 possible returning - 10 or more open (3 D from U17 NDP & 4 D from U16 NDP, 3 from tryout)
F - 19 possible returning - F - 17 or more open (2 F from U17 NDP, 9 from U16 NDP, 6 in tryout?)

Don't know about the automatic bids, but I was told the tryout invites will go out sometime in the next week.

If a player made final 54 (U16) will they get an invite to try out?

There is no guarantee although it would generate some revenue for them. Also, the Advance 16 group does not have an automatic entry into the league this year due to the amount of returning players. They (the Final Advance 16 group) must also receive an invitation to tryout.

What's with guaranteed spots for returning players? Older players get beat out by younger players all the time so why would any older player be guaranteed a spot anywhere?

Maybe with girls there just aren't as many around so they're more likely to hold on to a position without knowing whether or not they've improved their game.

Just an FYI, my daughter made the final 54 the last three years and was never invited to tryout.

Good point....I wasn't saying there were any guaranteed slots I was just projecting a possible scenario on spots based on last year - I think until a letter is sent that you are in or you get a letter to try out and then a selection letter no one will no - last year the tryouts were in August. The League last year had a ratio of 50% seniors maybe 40-45% Jrs and then a few 9 & 10 graders (leading scorer I think was a 9th grader Hannah Brandt)

If you watched the U17 vs. U16 Phase II & III tryouts there was a great chance to watch U16 & U17 play and on Sunday of Phase III even some cross over games where they went head to head. I think watching over the weekend games you could see in the U17 games the kids are bigger stronger and faster but there are many talented U16 players.

Again this is a great League and great step forward to help MN HS girls develop their game - similar to what the boys have been able to do over the past 8-9 years - if you get invited to play or try out do so. Also if offered an alternate slot take it - seemed like there was always a group in and out fall sports, college visits, injuries...and other conflicts

Sunday Finals

East 1 Shattuck 1 Championship 1:15 PM - Shattuck won in shoot out goalies McKeever & Joarnt were outstanding
Oustate 2 - Belle Tire 2 Third Place 11:30 AM - Belle Tire won in shoot out
West 3 Thunder Bay 2 9:45 AM
Balmoral Hall vs Crunch 8 AM - don't know score

Great opening weekend! SSM was short Kessel till today in Championship & Mazzario was injured and didn't play but both Outstate and East Metro tied them 1-1 in regulation big step up in competitive parity over opening weekend blow outs last year (SSM won all U19 games last year in league except for one tie with East).

It was a good hockey weekend. I'm not sure about the 4 foward lines though. Especially when they shortened games to 17 minutes.

The Elite II Boys League is sitting players each game so they have 14-15 skaters, 3 forward lines.

I just think before you find subs. Why not ask the girls who pay $$ to play if they want to play short 3 lines. I know they want to give more girls an opportunity but it's my understanding subs play at no cost.

I'm not trying to stir the pot. I just noticed fowards weren't getting a ton of ice. Especially when it's a penalty filled game. With 4 lines you really have to have quick shifts. When you have college scouts in the stands it's nice to get more opportunities.

My daughter's a D and not complaining. Just asking.
