Schwan's Blues Invitational
This looks to be a great Tourney. The Schwan's Blues Invitation is rapidly becoming one of the best local tourneys for Minnesota girls hockey players. This year is the strongest field yet.

Rosters aren't out yet and I'm sure that there will be a few surprises. The OS/Xtreme has played in 2 tourneys already and they practice once a week so they should be ready. The Pink Panthers played together in the Stick It and many of the Jr. Whitecaps - Silver are playing together on the Saints team in the 2 Nations League so I don't think there will be a lot of rust for many of these teams. I think that only the Jr. Whitecaps-Blue and Icecats-Perushek are playing together for the first time this year.joehockey wrote:Agreed great field! The Blues, Micheletti Ice Cats and the MN Blades have been playing togther the last couple weekends so they may have an edge in this tourney. Are the rosters out - some of these teams I am not sure who they will have this weekend?

You are correct. It was an oversight that unfortunately I can't correct. Only a moderator or administrator can change a poll once a vote has been cast. I will ask the moderator to make the change but I can't do anything else about it. Sorry about that Schwan's Blues.ghshockeyfan wrote:I think the Schwan's Blues team is missing from the poll attached to this thread =)

I figured it was not intentional... I've done the same too with the polls before... By the way - this is obviously taking place the same time & place as the Open Olympic tryouts and unfortunately this is during the D1 blackout period so those coaches can't attend but I hear some D3 coaches may or could?OntheEdge wrote:You are correct. Not that it really matters but to call this a 2011 team is misleading. I believe that there are only 5 or 6 2011 girls out of the 20 listed. The 2011 team in the tournament would have to be the Micheletti Ice Cats. Which has a majority of 2011 players mixed in with 2010 players.

Just a note that rosters posted aren't necessarily complete or final. If you look there are a few girls that are double rostered (e.g. Amanda Colin- Blades and Jr. Whitecaps, Natalie Berg- Blades and OS/Xtreme, Jonna Curis- Jr Whitecaps and OS Selects in Tier II). Also I see that there are a few girls that I know are rostered not on the list. The roster is just what is entered by a manager by a certain date. From experience, I know that they often change significantly by the first day of the tourney and don't get updated.joehockey wrote:Rosters are now posted

Not that it really matters but to call this a 2011 team is misleading. I believe that there are only 5 or 6 2011 girls out of the 20 listed. The 2011 team in the tournament would have to be the Michelletti Ice Cats. Which has a majority of 2011 players mixed in with 2010 players.
Team is new appearing in first tournament I understand it is designed to be a second younger MN JR Whitecap team as the Silver Team is all 2010 class except 1 player who is 2011. Many girls are outstate and won't be in for this tournament - Christopherson (I missed her name in initial post), Harren, Romatoski, Knajdek all were on the JWC Silver team last year and may just be filling in - all 4 will be playing D1 this fall.
Colin, Duellman, Henning, Rolando are all 2010 and will play with team this year.
Like I said it doesn't really matter. I think its a team represented by all 4 classes: 4 from 2009, 4 from 2010, 6 from 2011 and 6 from 2012. Wouldn't a HS team love to have such a mix of talented older and younger players?joehockey wrote: Agree on 2011 and Micheletti Ice Cats - as you point out maybe this is better called 2012.....

Colin, Duellman, Henning, Rolando are all 2010 and will play with team this year.
Yes, any HS team would love it.OntheEdge wrote:Like I said it doesn't really matter.

I wasn't able to attend any of the tournament games this weekend but I understand that this team played very shorthanded for most of their games. Several players were sick or had other commitments which left them with just 9-11 players on some days and they ran out of gas against other full rosters.joehockey wrote:The U19 Ice Cats-Perushek was an All Star lineup and fun chance for the younger teams to compete against.

Overall it sounds like there was some good hockey played with many close games - nice to see such balance spread across so many teams.
I think your understanding is correct. This All-Star team was usually shorthanded and there were a couple of girls that were returning for the first time from some serious injuries (Domass and Gilbert). However, as seems to be typical in girls hockey, the younger girls were not intimidated by the older players. In the 3rd place game the younger (primarily sophomore) Icecats beat the older Icecat team (primarily Seniors) and in the Championship Game, the Jr. Whitecaps - Silver won (which is mostly a Junior team) but the Blades (in general a freshman/sophomore team) gave them all they could handle. The quality of play in girls hockey gets better every year.MNHockeyFan wrote:I wasn't able to attend any of the tournament games this weekend but I understand that this team played very shorthanded for most of their games. Overall it sounds like there was some good hockey played with many close games - nice to see such balance spread across so many teams.

Too bad…you missed some very good hockey. Lots of talent on the ice, which made for some very exciting games. The problem, because of the time of year, is that most if not all of the teams were playing short at one time or another, but your right none more then with this team...but then again the ones who did play…wow what a line up! What I found amusing was that at the same time this tournament was going on so was the Open Olympic trials. Maybe someone else could comment, but as I walked from one rink to another I thought action was better on the rinks where the tournament was being played.

All they could handle. I thought the Blades controlled as much or more of the game and had the greater scoring chances. The extra line the White Caps had may have been the difference down the stretch were I felt that, and being the more experienced team, helped them prevailed at the end. They have to feel very fortunate to have won…but it’s the eye of the beholder I guessOntheEdge wrote:I think your understanding is correct. Several players were sick or had other commitments which left them with just 9-11 players on some days and they ran out of gas against other full rosters.joehockey wrote:The U19 Ice Cats-Perushek was an All Star lineup and fun chance for the younger teams to compete against.

Very good tourney I heard, but when comparing to the Olympic Tryout keep in mind that it's an "Open" tryout meaning that pretty much anyone can do it vs. these tourneys which have pretty selective teams usually...hockeyheaven wrote:Too bad…you missed some very good hockey. I think GHS makes a good point and I agree with Hockeyheaven. I too went back and forth between the Olympic Open Tryout and the Tourney and thought that the evaluators at the Olympic Tryout would have been better off watching some of the Blues Invitational match ups.ghshockeyfan wrote:Very good tourney I heard, but when comparing to the Olympic Tryout keep in mind that it's an "Open" tryout meaning that pretty much anyone can do it vs. these tourneys which have pretty selective teams usually...hockeyheaven wrote:Too bad…you missed some very good hockey. The Blades had much more jump the whole game including the two shorthanded goals by Reber and not unitl the last 2 minutes did the JWC-S get serious.
The JWC-S played thier roster this weekend and were probably more fortunate than other teams regarding conflicts and injuries. Kallie Billadeau was outstanding in net all weekend. The team seems faster, stronger and had better puck movement than a year ago - Chelsea Wiitwicke (D), Dani Schulzien (D), Corinne Buie (F), Dana Gallop (F) are all great additions.
No question the Blades are a very good team who are well coached they will keep getting better - this week they beat the Micheletti Ice Cats 3-1 (EN) after losing 7-0 to them last weekend in TNFHL play. They had a few of their key players out. But especially in summer hockey in any given game on any given day....
I understand their will be a series of 3 at cost Jamborees this summer between the 2 Ice Cat teams, 2 JWC teams and the Blades - should be more great games like this weekend.
