Despite the alterations done to your post... I like the fact that this can happen. You all need to know that I'm all for not playing hockey all year round and spending a rather mid-sized fortune. However, with a few exceptions it seems that most of the successes in the game played at a high level all the time. (And Elite League is not the end-all, but summer, fall and spring AAA counts here too.)Nonamer wrote:Blue & Gold, Chris Niskanen of Virinia and more recently the Dallas Stars did not play Elite hockey. He fished alot though...
The point I guess I want to make is that in today's world, if you are planning to play D1 and pro, you need to get a ton of ice time and play at some very high levels while you can. Those who don't do it that way are an inspiration and I wish that everyone could. Some folks have figured out how to make a lot of money out of convincing parents that their little Johnny needs to play in their league, on their team, come to their camp or be in their tournament to succeed. And when Johnny doesn't do these things and doesn't "make it" then everyone believes. Of course, Johnny wouldn't have made it anyway, but who looks that closely?
It's a tough world that we live in, and even though I bring up the point, doesn't mean I agree with it.
Good luck to all of us, we may need it.
Article in today's SC Times goes and shows non-hockey folks that everything they've heard about hockey families is true. (And this is not a good thing.)
Niskanen - word from a couple of guys that were very involved with Mn hockey "in the day" is that Matt spent a TON of time working on his game all year round. He may have gone fishing in the summer, but he was on the ice, in camps and working his butt off getting better. I have to call BS on the statement that he didn't do anything in the off-season.

The first article brings back memories of a similar sham regarding a local coach from a few years ago.Love4Hockey wrote:http://sctimes.com/article/20090506/SPO ... ckey+coach

This is true if you can take out the two years that the program had to deal with the interim coach. Yes, they did go to the state tournament his first year, but the moms could have coached that team to the tournament and would have probably done a better job when there. A "statement" seemed to have been made to the parents that if you don't like the coach we have, then "here you go". Now that Eric Johnson is there, all is forgiven as he is probably the best young coach in the area.2pipesnin wrote:And from the looks of the accomplishments that Cathedral has had since the coaching change, it was not such a bad decision bringing in a teacher/coach after all. Change is good, especially when it is positive. Tech will be fine.
The SCC coach that was asked to step down just took the local Junior A Tier III team to the Nationals and made it to the semifinals, and that's after taking over the team after the season began.
All I can say to the parents is: "Be careful what you ask for, as you might just get it."
Ur correct, Blue and Gold.
People think there is always something better around the corner, when in fact they fail to see the bus that is coming that completely runs them over.
Teachers as coaches are fine, so long as they are good coaches. Putting a teacher in a spot to coach hockey just because he is a teacher is idiotic at best and reeks of cronyism and laziness. Go out and find the best candidate now that you've created this mess. If the best candidate is a teacher, that's swell. If not, don't force the issue.

got it
You're right Westy. Just forming opinions too. I've heard good things about the Tiger young kids though. Are they pretty good?
Not sure I have the experience that some of those guys have. I've only been out of the game a short time. Thanks for the reminder though.
Any rumors on who is interested? Sounds like its still anybodys job. I don't know enough people here. Just a guy trying to get done with school and get into the real world. also bored enough to sit and chat on these things.

Rumors abound. There were some local names that came up, but none seem to be applying as far as i've heard. A friend of mine spoke to Harrington cause his name was kicked around. He didn't seem to deny it, but did indicated to my friend that he is returning to Europe and still trying to sell his house, so that one doesn't seem likely.
The thing that worries me is they said they are looking for a teacher for the Tech job and now, I'm sure, the Apollo job. That's great if there are some who are qualified, but i think they should open it to teachers and non teachers and may the best many win.

That's a great question. I try not to be negative, but I haven't seen a lot of positives coming from this district, their hiring process, treatment of coaches etc. They don't seem to have any sense of urgency. Quite frankly, I think boys hockey ranks toward the bottom (with wrestling) in the eyes of most of those "administrators" involved. They seem to have a lot of other things ahead on their priority list.

sweet storys
back from a nice break of fishin.
Looks like its been somewhat active. Heard they posted both jobs now, its official.
So who are the big names for the Apollo job? Which assistants are interested? Thought they were all gone. I would guess Larson will probably apply, though he doesn't seen so well thought of here. Not sure why, but maybe someone could fill in.
Would the old Tech coaching staff be interested?
Love4Hockey, what is it that you and Duecey don't like about Larson.
Did you guys play for him or have kids that played for him? Curious?

Apollo can only go up and the names ive heard have been Grant Clafton, Matt Hartman and Mike Howe, possibly Chris Harrington too but thats a reach, its a great group of kids who show up to the rink each day wanting to play hockey and wanting to get better, its also going be a relatively young group who will be able to be taught easier and will focus better, all plusses for a open head coaching job

forgot
last post then I'm hitting the books. Stupid summer school!
Don't the schools hire the coach? I know my old high school coach was hired by the school and wasn't a teacher. Owns his business and hi assitants were teachers.
I would think the schools have the final say, unless I'm wrong. It is a school sport still, right?
How does it work in St Cloud?
