Okay, I'll go first.

The Big Nine are:
Albert Lea
Austin
Rochester Century
Faribault
Mankato East
Mankato West
Rochester Mayo
Owatonna
Rochester John Marshall
Winona

But that means the 'Big Nine' conference has Ten teams?!

Best players? Hah!! Someone else needs to weigh in.

Mayo will have a good group of returners, probably top five in Big Nine.

Serratore, Dingle, Powers, Sikema, O'reilly

There is no way Serratore will be top 5 in the big nine.

Mayo

I thought Serratore was an average JV defenseman last year? Did Mayo lose 90% of their team?

Owatonna 09/10

Post by Miracle1980 »

Here is my opinion on the top five skill players returning for Owatonna
1. Snorek -if he returns?
2. Johnson
3. Wagner -if he returns?
4. Pirkl
5. Ebeling/Thompson/Feichtinger -all juniors next year and do different things well.
*I left off Rohrig, because he is just a bull who stands in front of the net. I also left off Larson who I think is overated by the coaching staff. Just my opinion.

I'm pretty familiar with the Owatonna players mentioned. Here's my take.

Snorek ...very skilled player, but handles the puck way too much. Has never learned to pass the puck to teammates.
Johnson ...my opinion the best overall player on next years team.
Wagoner ...great skater and probably has the best chance to play hockey after high school.
Pirkl ...very good scorer and nice shot, but needs a playmaking type center to set him up (Johnson or Thompson).
Ebeling ...hard working strong, and fast. Needs to learn defensive zone coverage better.
Thompson ...good hockey instincts and excellent passer, but needs to get stronger.
Feichtinger ...good skater/player. Needs to stay focused on the ice.
Rohrig ...Biggest, Strongest player in Big Nine. Hardest shot in Big Nine, biggest weakness is he is not a very good stickhandler.
Larson ...good player, but I agree with Miracle played way too much last year as a sophmore. He's tall and can skate, but turns the puck over a lot.
Couple of others:
Hanson ...I like the way this kid plays. Tall and Physical, a little out of control though.
Olson ...sophmore. Don't know how much Varsity time he'll get, but probably Rohrigs replacement. Big strong kid in front of the net. Not very coordinated though.
Paulson ...next years junior goalie. Like most teams. If he plays well the team has a chance to do well.

Snorek - Told summer soccer coaches he wasn't returning to Owatonna next season and was focusing on finding a new hockey team over the summer. Parents house is on the market. Enlisted in the National Guard and leaves soon I believe for basic training. If he does come back...he needs to learn that there is no I in TEAM.
Johnson - With the "senior dynasty" graduating (as toted by their parents, did you know they made it to the state tournament as Bantams, twice!) he should be able to step up.
Wagoner - not returning. He made the U16 Russell Stover team in Kansas City, good luck to him.
Pirkl - decent player, agree with miracle and fw
Ebeling - lacks passion, doesn't seem like he really wants to play but if he can figure that out he'll be a player.
Thompson - good skills
Larson - I agree with miracle and fw.
Feichtinger - good player/skater but doesn't play position well at all.
Rohrig - FW, he may be the biggest player, and I'll give him strong. But he is painfully slow and he really needs to work on stickhandling. Agree with Miracle completely.
Hanson - agree again with fw...needs to work on discipline both on and off the ice.
Paulson - can be good in net...depends on his mood. When he's hot, he can be tough. Hale may be able to make a move on Paulson...outside chance, but it's there.
Olson - Does lack coordination. Needs to scale back on the physical intensity a bit or learn to control it. you can't compare him to rohrig because Olson has some skills, can move the puck, and can skate - even if it's not the prettiest.
Who from JV can make the move up? - most of those kids were really small, Deetz, Swenson, Yentsch (not small). How about Bantams? Brown, Kimball?
My take, with the owatonna kids leaving the program - they will have to work hard but should be fine.

Mayo did lose a tremendous amout of talent from last season I believe somewhere of 11 seniors. They will not be overly talented but have some players returning. Serratore is an average defender and Dingle will help out there as well . O'reilly doesn't skate all that well but will be depended upon to do some scoring along with sikema (spelling?). I have heard they have a couple of transfers from Austin (Juniors I believe) Sederquist and Mcmaster. Sederquist from what I heard is a pretty good player. Truex and Powers will be relied upon as well. Regardless I don't think Mayo will do much in the big 9 next year anyway. My pick to win the big 9 is Faribault.

Sederquist is a good player when he wants to be but has somewhat of an Attitude problem, he doesnt back check very often and doesnt hustle all the time, if he fixes these things He would be a very tough competitor. I also Think Faribault will take the title but who knows anyone has a shot,
here is my listing for Austin
Dooley (if he returns)- He is a Good goaltender but some times lacks consistancey, once you score it get easier and easier to score.
Bennett- Good defensemen, Best returning, he is tough in front of the net , small but very solid, sometimes lacks vison on the ice.
Figliola- Solid, Fast Knows how to be a team player and has a very hard shot, easily the top returning center.
McMasters- Good hands , average speed, Not a very good team player though, I think he only had one assisst last year.
McBain- Good vison, Makes Some good plays, Probably the best team player, Has a tough time scoring but when he turns it on he gets the job done also good size.

Conway are you joking me?
Bennett has speed and strength, lacks everything else
Figliola strong skater, descent hands, hard shot. i believe he is a line mate of the McMasters kid.
McMasters is the best player this team has. He skates the puck very well and has great vision. Very well rounded. just lacks speed.
Mcbain? who is that? ive never heard of him on this team? how does he compare to these three i have named?

McMasters is not the best n the team, I would have to say Figliola is the best all around. I have seen most of the games this year and I have noticed that McMasters has some moves but he tries to make it look too pretty most of the time, Also I have noticed Figliola, and Bennett play with intensity every shift and McBain seems to make a difference when he has the puck or a chance to get it.

really? who is this McBain kid? Never heard of him?
wasnt he the kid who got one assist thanks to McMasters scoring his third goal against Mankato East?
How could you say Figliola is the best player?
McMasters played first line as a sophomore i believe. where bennett and figliola were jv.
and somewhere around this time McBain fell off the face of the earth onto that jv team as well.
and i have been to many games as well and McMasters is the only player i could see do anything. Figliola was a contender not a smart player.
its to bad the McMasters brother had to leave. He was a good player and he could have been a good adition to that line with McMasters and Figliola

You must not be watching the same team as I am then becuase Bennett and Figliola have been on varsity since they have been playing highschool hockey and McBain has played in most of the games since he was a freshman I believe, Either you are McMasters yourself or are good friends with him if you think he is the only one that can do something on this team, as far as that Goal in mankato I believe i was there and I remeber McMasters getting the goal because of a nice move From McBain to get the puck past the defenseman.

You two can stop promoting yourselves now. Or are those your sons?

no i am not a mcmasters or a mcbain.
this charlieconway i have heard is the nickname the austin hockey team calls Joe McBeain. so you can stop trying to cover yourself up all star. you will never be as good as any of those three players you have named and you can stop trying to promote yourself. and i have been to several high school games and McMasters was playing first line with i think it was Swatfager and Merritt when he was a sophomore. so where ever you get this hype from your fellow teamates about yourself! im about as fooled as you are! nice try Joe!
