Cascade Hockey helmet.
Does anyone know how these helmets do as for preventing concussions? My son just got his second and I am seriously considering buying one.

How old is your son? After your second one, another sport should be given serious consideration.Washed Up wrote:Does anyone know how these helmets do as for preventing concussions? My son just got his second and I am seriously considering buying one.

I bought a cascade. May be ugly but I like it a lot. Makes me feel a little more protected out there.
Makes you feel more protected, but are you more protected? Have you had a concussion since?

I think if you are using a top of the line, properly fitted Bauer or Reebok helmet and you're getting concussions you need to look at the way you're playing, not what you're wearing.Washed Up wrote:Does anyone know how these helmets do as for preventing concussions? Only MHO.
Wearing a good quality mouthguard in addition......
Wear a mouthguard. It's not for your teeth--it's to prevent concussions. It's not doing you any good jammed in your facemask.

YES, I'm sure most here know that but let's say it again. Mouth guards protect the teeth but the main reason is to protect the brain.Poolside wrote:Wear a mouthguard. It's not for your teeth--it's to prevent concussions. It's not doing you any good jammed in your facemask.

All of these are extremely valid points.
-Mouthgaurds are necessary. get one fitted from the dentist and you wont even know it is there.
-Half the kids with concussions think they look cool when they have their mask dangling, no mouthgaurd, and try to make moves through people twice their size, all while skating with their heads down.
there is no "concussion proof helmet", but the way the cascade is designed to take a blow will significantly reduce your risk of a concussion. The new Bauer helmet has been compared to the cascade and are both very good helmets.

I'll agree. I played 20 years and never once had a concussion. I also wore Bauers the entire time. Most of the people I saw get a concussion were caught with their heads down or were looking behind them for a pass.
Wearing a mouth guard is a good way to help prevent a concussion but their is only 1 full proof way of avoiding them and thats not to get hit, which is nearly impossible.

i got the helmet after i recieved my 2nd concussion (the first was non hockey related and the second came excatly one month later on the ice during a game) anyways my second happened in november and i was out until christmas so i got the cascade helmet for christmas and i absolutly love it! my old helmet was a ccm and it was old and it would get tight when i sweated and would hurt my head and the cascade helmet doesnt do that.
i do also agree that mouthguards help A LOT!!! coming from a team who has had many concussions in the past (including 2 in the same practice given by the same teammate, never doing that drill again...) my coach now requires the whole team, regardless of having suffered from a concussion or not to have our mouthguards in our mouths PROPERLY when we hit the ice even if its only practice.
my team has our own sports med. person and she wont let us hit the ice without being properly equipped
