Private School Tournament
I think what would be really cool, and would draw some big crowds, would be a Catholic school tourney at the Colliseum or something during Christmas break. This would probably draw a lot of interest from these schools, atleast a lot more than most Christmas tournaments do. Plus it would be some good hockey and create some good rivalries, especially if the same eight teams played in it year after year.
You could have:
Hill-Murray
Cretin Derham-Hall
Totino-Grace
Breck
Blake
Holy Angels
Benilde-St. Margrets
St. Thomas
I could see that developing into a really big tournament.

Interesting idea. Univ. of St. Thomas has hosted a basketball tournament sponsored by the Catholic Spirit newspaper in recent years. Many, but not all teams in the tourney are Catholic Schools.
Note - Blake and Breck are private - but not Catholic schools. But you could replace them with Lourdes and Holy Family or Cathedral if you wanted to "keep it in the family"

Re: Private School Tournament
Better yet, how about a private school conference? Each team would play each other twice, (14 games total) vs. if it was a tournament, they only get in three games over 1 weekend. Would be one of the top conferences in MNNorthsider wrote:I think what would be really cool, and would draw some big crowds, would be a Catholic school tourney at the Colliseum or something during Christmas break. Swanns cup doesn't draw crowds now, doubt a private school tournament would either. But you would see some good crowds at these conference riveraly games.
Would also reduce the amount of whining from public schools, at least they would have to wait until section playoffs/state

What an original idea!

Take it higher
Have this tournament at a smaller venue with two sheets of ice. Have the varsity and the JV play at the same rink. You could even make it a boys and girls tournament. That would be a great show.

Not a terrible idea but I believe a new tournament will be initiating this year at the St Louis Park Rec center. It already has a lot of big name teams in it- including a few of the aforementioned private schools. If anyone has more info on the tourney that'd be great because I haven't heard much.
Stay Classy, Minnesota.

I dont know who is playing who, but for the most part it looks like it will be a good tourney.
Don't hate STA. I wouldn't want to lose either.

Looks as good as, if not better than, the Schwan Cup Gold. Should be a great tournament.stmartin123 wrote:Bloomington Jefferson, Centennial , Elk River , Maple Grove , Moorhead, Wayzata, Woodbury, and Benilde.Papa Bergundy wrote:Not a terrible idea but I believe a new tournament will be initiating this year at the St Louis Park Rec center. Any idea who the Schwan Cup's going to take, now that several of its regular teams have left for this one?
I think the four automatics for winning last years first round will be there: WBL. AHA, Tonka, Edina. If my memory serves me correctly, I recall Centennial and Moorhead were both losers in the first round and therefore would have moved down to the Silver bracket.karl(east) wrote:Looks as good as, if not better than, the Schwan Cup Gold.
