I think most colleges offer a camp, and there typically is no try-out to my knowledge

No try-out is right... They actually can't do that by ncaa bylaws I believe... Many think of this as being similar to being chosen by the school to participate but it's really just a chance to be seen by the school's coaches at their camp. I'm sure each camp has some guidelines for admission but mainly age groups etc?

I tend to believe the staff actually has a desire to provide some instruction beneficial to the participant as well.

I do agree that the "be seen" factor is primary for some participants.
